Yeah totally. check out the Latest Beta Release If you haven't already, to see the map you'll be connecting to (Zeeba-G's).

You can build a hallway that connects his room to yours, or i can build it for you. If you have any suggestions how we can improve and spruce up the project, please let us know!

I'm still planning on adding a intro map that would include some music, a loading bar, and some other small things to introduce you to the project. Beyond that and some bugs, we're pretty much done i think. (If anyone has some suggestions/thoughts/contributions on what should go in the intro map, PLEEZ let me know!)

Maybe after your map we can do our first official release, since it's been quite some time since we started. I will say though that even after the "official" release, i will still be willing to integrate new entries into the project at any time, so to the people who still have WIPs out there: There's no rush.

An explanation of what the project is and what is to come might be nice, perhaps some nice ambient music made by someone from TWHL? And maybe we could paste in a story, like it's some kind of TWHL secret mapping hideout.
EDIT: of course, that would mean I'm a vort (:D) And Rimrook is a girl with an ugly face (D8)

Yeah i don't know about adding a story with all our discordant themes, but hey if someone can think of some story line that works, then fine.

Any musically-inclined users, feel free to submit some music for the splash/intro room. Maybe we could use a low-key music bit too that would repeat through the whole project too? might be cool i dunno..

Urby: I'd like to use your custom splash for the minimod format too if we end up doing the official release in minimod format. Maybe we should do some custom sounds/buttons/text for the splash too?

All: I still need more people to test the current minimod format in Steam as well as WON, and to let me know if the project looks/behaves the same in both. As i said earlier, i get very bad bugs/issues when running the minimod format in steam,,but it runs fine if i extract the folders to my valve folder and run from console. (again, i can't test WON cuz my vista x64 won't allow me to install it)

One possible story:
It is the year 2029. The combine have all but conqured humanity... But there is hope... In the secluded australian outback, there lies an outpost where talented individuals search the universe for the telltale signs of the Gman, looking for the one free man... This organisation is called TWHL. The members of TWHL use a sophisticated computer program, codenamed "Teh Hammre" to model various dimentions and planets in 3D. When they find where doctor Freeman is kept, they will convince the Gman to let him go. Each member of TWHL has their own room where they can live and work in comfort, each utilizing a different amount of technology, but all using "Teh Hammre" in their computers in the hope that they can save both Humanity, and Vortigaunt kind. You are a member of TWHL, codenamed "Captian Terror" And you have found a new Gman location. You have to show the founder, Atom, the new location, but he's busy at the other end of the base. You begin a process called "Compiling" that will show the target location in higher clarity, and It should be finished by the time you reach Atom. Either way, you need to show him the new data. All your lives depend on it.
Needs a bit of refinement, But it may be able to work.

Does my room have to be related to the previous room, or just have a path to it and the next one?
Posted 15 years ago2009-03-16 23:45:10 UTC Post #264192
JeffMOD: LOL.

World Crafter: nope, doesn't have to be related to the previous room at all, but if you can manage a hallway that reflects both themes, all the better. (by NO MEANS a requirement)

I had an idea today about the intro map, and i'm wondering what you all think about it:

Team Mapping.

We break up the 12 current authors in to teams, each to take on an aspect of the introductory map for the rooms project. We can break up the jobs as we see fit, but here's a preliminary list of tasks:

-concept/design (maybe we can work in elements of JeffMOD's story idea)
-brushwork
-lighting/sprite work, volumetric light effects
-sounds/soundtrack/ambience
-texturing

If we all contributed to the concept/design, that would leave us exactly 4 jobs. 12 authors divided by 4, equals 3 people to a team. After we all worked out the concept, the Brushwork team would begin. After that, i don't know if it would be better to d texturing or lighting first, and sounds could be done last or during progress of the other stages.

What do you think? I think it would be a pretty neat thing to have a team-built map to introduce a compilation of individual works. = )

To refresh everyone's memory, here's the current author list (not counting people with WIPs still out there, with the exception of World Crafter):

Captain0terror
JeffMOD
Hlife_hotdog
Raver
Rimrook
Tetsu0
SpaG
nefarious
TJB

I like the first part of your story very much, the second part needs work tho imo. Hopefully, we can get everyone to participate and agree on the concept/theme of the intro map--essentally, the intro map will tell the story that trys to give all the rooms some sort of common thread.

Once the concept is out of the way, it will be a fairly easy thing to flesh out and finish the map imo.. (hopefully)

Mirror 1

This latest version is in minimod format. Pleeze authors test this release, and forward your comments/concerns/requests for changes. I'm still experiencing major visual and entity bugs when i play the game in minimod format, but it runs fine for me if i copy/paste the gamefiles to the valve directory. Remember, i don't have the ability to test WON, so if some of can do that, would be great.

When you report your comments and concerns, pleez tell me what version of HL you're using (WON or STEAM), and, if you what format you played the game in (MINIMOD or VALVE DIRECTORY).

This latest release contains maps submitted by the following authors:

Captain Terror
JeffMOD
hlife_hotdog
raver
Rimrook
Tetsu0
SpaG
nefarious
TJB
MuzzleFlash
Zeeba-G
and now
World Crafter

Authors: feel free to provide updated versions of your map at anytime, and i will immediately make the changes.

To those with WIPs still out there, or those thinking about it: there is no rush, and no deadline. Submit your maps whenever you're ready, and i'll add them to the mix.

Request: Are there any among you that are musically inclined? Maybe someone could compose a theme for the Splash screen and soon-to-be-built intro map?

Urby: that reminds me i'm going to add/test your splash screen right now. Can/should we make custom menu item text/sounds?

Nice keep the input coming for the splash screen and the intro map, because i'm starting work on them now.

Is there anyone out there musically inclined? I'm not, but it would be great to have some original music for this...

I wanted to make the intro map a coop project--and still do!--amongst all the authors, but since i didn't get much feedback about that idea, i'm starting work on it now, myself.

Also btw, i've just been informed via PM, we have another TWHL mapper joining the rooms project! He is a very skilled mapper, so I'm fairly excited to see what he makes! (i'll keep his identity seekrit until he decides to let you know) YAY MYSTERY MAPPER

What type of music you looking for?
I've been playing guitar for 7 years i can lay down some tracks if you'd like.
I record straight into my computer. The sound quality is decent.

And once the mod is compiled, to save work, I think any further submissions should go to a rooms2 : combat mod

I was thinking an instrumental/futuristic/ambient theme. I was also thinking or making like 4-6 individual tracks, mushed together to make one eclectic, semi erratic theme. Kinda like take song, play it for 15-25 seconds, and then blend it into the next one. Even tho they'd all be different, they'd all have to have some sort of common thread i guess, but not necessarily. This would all be great if i new anything about music production!

But heck, if you're willing to compose some original music, do whatever you think would be cool. If you want to wait to see what the intro map and splash are going to look like before you begin, that's cool, but it will be a while because i just started the intro map...

Noone wants to start another, different coop more than me, but i'm going to hold to my promise that there WILL NOT be any deadline for the rooms coop. (sorry i didn't respond to that right away!)

However, as soon as the first, complete release is put in the mapvault, i would TOTALLY be psyched to start a NEW coop, with a stronger, more specific theme/premise. (i think it'd be neat to do a team map, where like 12 people break up into 3 or 4-person teams, and each team is assigned tasks to complete: everything from concept/design, to the finished product)
The mystery mapper is Kasperg
I dont' know who that is, but the mystery mapper is not him! = )

btw zeeba, here is an updated version of your map i worked on last night. I put a side-by-side comparison pic of radcore, and the edited rooms version, and you're right, yours is darker. what compile settings did you use? And your right the original looks much much better than the rooms edit, but like i said, i did what i had to to get it to compile. We/you/i could also try scaling some of the textures back down, and using a higher chop value. Here are the settings i used to compile your map:

hlfix.exe "D:\D2\vhe\maps\rooms7.rmf" -w "D:\D2\vhe\tools\wad.txt"

hlcsg.exe "D:\D2\vhe\maps\rooms7.map" -cliptype Simple -texdata 8192 -low -chart -estimate

hlbsp.exe "D:\D2\vhe\maps\rooms7.map" -texdata 8192 -low -chart -estimate

hlvis.exe "D:\D2\vhe\maps\rooms7.map" -full -texdata 8192 -low -chart -estimate

hlrad.exe "D:\D2\vhe\maps\rooms7.map" -extra -sparse -bounce 1 -chop 72 -smooth 50 -texchop 32 -texdata 8192 -low -chart -estimate

There isn't going to be any custom textures probably.
It's supposed to look like the original except for the monsters. You aren't going to be able to get into the room, instead you are going to be in a room above it, seeing sort of a 3D movie through the glass floor.
That metal thing (which will be replaced) is a button which starts the "movie".
