I should have a workable layout in a couple days, hopefully! Will we be able to test source maps eventually as well?

I have done the layout first seeing as it must be similar to the original, I can make changes later.

In reality i'm just showing how epic mapping with dual screens is and how it's bringing a whole new experience to mapping.

the layout doesn't have to be similar to the original.

It's the [m]visual style[/m] that has to be kept intact (coherent deviations are allowed though).
You have complete freedom as far as [m]gameplay[/m] goes.

Please read the rules properly, guys. You're just limiting yourselves by not doing so.

Is that italy-ish?
Posted 12 years ago2012-01-03 22:14:13 UTC Post #302395
Haha yeah, his layout basically IS Italy.
Maybe he taught to remake Italy, but didn't know that layout can be anything you want, so he remade Italy layout.

I thought of doing an italy-type map too, but the layout isn't entirely mine so I think it wouldn't qualify.

Basically, back in 2002 (10 years ago already!) when I was pumping out CS crap like the assault remake (it's in the map vault, don't make me explain) this classmate came to me asking to compile his map - an italy remake - because something or others. The layout wasn't bad, and it could actually work with a few minor adjustments. The only problem was that the map was built entirely with huge white brushes. No detail and no texturing. I chopped off a part and added 2 textured brushes and abandoned it. Until compo 32 came up, when I remembered it had potential.

I'm still unsure of whether I should go with that or with the other map I had in mind. What's the position on borrowed-ish layouts?

Maybe I'll do something else and upload this one to the vault later on.

If you like the layout, go right ahead. I doubt your friend from 10 yrs ago would mind. ;)
Will we be able to test source maps eventually as well?
I don't have a solution to that yet, but we'll definitely think of something.

And lots of potential italy submissions indeed! This should be interesting, looking forward to what you all come up with.

I suck at layouts, so this one might actually work.

I did read the rules.

And I haven't finished, quite obviously. ;)

You just said the layout must be similar to the original which isn't in the directions. The directions state that the "theme" must be similar.

I guess that doesn't mean you couldn't do a similar layout...
Posted 12 years ago2012-01-05 21:49:10 UTC Post #302461
I was mistaken in my horrible choice of words. I'll lie and say I mean't it to be 'I must, personally, make the layout similar to the original' to not look like a complete clot. ;)

With the rules as they are, aren't we going to end up with a load of random maps using CS .wads, sounds and models? That is if no one remakes the orignal maps with new textures.

I think more specific rules need to be identified with new competitions, I got marked down on the last competition due to gameplay...the other maps didn't even have gameplay. And, it was all about texturing...the top map got first due to geometry when I spent all my time placing my textures perfectly as I could manage. Besides, third place got third and only used about 10 of the 40 tetxures, so much for "find a use for all the textures and we might be impressed".[/sore loser]

That's why we have this thread. ;)
If anything is unclear in the slightest, or if you think the rules are missing something, feel free to let us know - that goes for everyone.

I want to emphasize again that you're allowed to do whatever you like with the gameplay/layout. That includes anything from minor tweaks to a complete overhaul & changed game mode. Meaning that using a similar layout like you did won't necessarily hurt your score, so long as it plays well. That said, someone who's significantly improved a layout that was previously unplayable will naturally be more favored to win.

Question: Can I use Italy's layout and give it a new theme entirely not from CS at all, like futuristic style, because it states an "original theme" and to make a new map using it. For example, I would be using Italy's layout and similar architecture but in a neo-italy kind of way. Is this acceptable?
Moaby MoabyMk. III
Posted 12 years ago2012-01-05 22:10:49 UTC Post #302464
No, I think that'd be pushing it too far. You have to pick an existing theme and essentially build a new map with it. You can enhance the theme with custom content, fancier brushwork, etc., but it still has to feel like the original.

So say if you're making an italy map, any player should easily be able to tell it's based on italy upon joining. That doesn't necessarily mean using the same textures/models. It's more finding the "signature" objects of each theme; for e.g. dust had the sandstone arches & the green chemical crates, italy had the opera/quitar music in the background, a marketplace with chickens, the wine cellar, frescoes on some of the walls, etc.
Once you pinpoint those objects, you're free to give them a makeover, so long as it's clear what they were based on. Also note that it could just as well be the atmosphere/lighting themes that make some of the maps unique.

No problem, I know how much it sucks to put loads of effort into an entry only to find out it didn't meet the all the requirements in the end.

coughXentransportationcough :P

Spent loads of time on it, was pretty happy with the end result at the time, yet it only had a single tiny Xen area, and even that wasn't fully accessible to the player.

Since I don't feel it's worthy of a new topic in the HL engine forum:

How exactly could I place the italian chicken in my map? There's no func_chicken. Is it a func_breakable that somehow toggles the model (cycler?) invisible?

In a nutshell, yes. You can decompile the original & have a look at how they did it exactly.

Moaby: I just finally played through ur mod(finally have ep2 installed) and I thought it superbly done, except i feel the setting was a bit overly-generic. (You would have swept with a more well-defined theme imo) Also while the texruring was great, I feel they could have been more creatively/adventurously applied.

[/2 cents]

BTW, that grinder was sweet, and I really enjoyed the initial combat area, 'twas perfectly done. It's apparent u put a lot of work into the maps, I'm sorry u didn't place sir ='(

And my map has a floating ball sack that you can't plant the bomb on and a flamingo you can't go by to try to snipe the right side of the eye of a terrorist that got pissed because he risked it all to fall behind and wind up dying immediately.

I tried to tell him to stop but he got shot right when I thought I taught him to turn around and take the underground route. But it was too late and his fate was forsake because of the mistake he made.

So I ran in and killed some players with a spray of an ak and a grenade and layed behind to find the time to think like a leet and sweep them off their feet. So I threw a flash bang and sang in the mike to make them confused and I abused their team and went down in history. :ciggie:

I'm so confused about the rules of this compo. First I thought it was to take a broken CS map and fix it. Then I thought it was to take the theme from a broken map, and make a completely new good map in that theme.

Can I take the theme from a cs map that sucks, the layout from another cs map that sucks, and combine them into a new map? I don't want to give away what I'm doing but I can give an example using different maps: If I decided de_downed blew chunks but the jungle theme was cool, and cs_militia blew chunks but the assault-a-building type of map was cool, could I remake cs_militia with a fixed layout in downed's jungle theme? Would that count as taking downed's theme and making a better map? pleasesayyespleasesayyespleasesayyes
Posted 12 years ago2012-01-09 18:03:50 UTC Post #302556
Yes. The idea is that you take an existing map's theme and put it to better use. If you think that a better use for the de_downed theme would be a map where you assault a building then go for it!
