Maybe the concept could be much broader. Like remake any part of hl1 "dm" or "sp" in any hl engine/ mod for any type of gameplay.

What do you think? Either way, i'll try to participate.

I mean, I suppose there's nothing to say a remake of a hldm map couldn't be remade in CS, or CSGO, or turned into a little singleplayer HL map...

I think if there's an issue, it's buttoning down what exactly you can do in a remake. Must it maintain the theme? Must it maintain the general layout? Must it only maintain key components, like the bounce pads in bounce?
I daresay much of this will be up to individual interpretation.

Jessie, as a judge you should help decide the rules with Trempler and perhaps Penguinboy.

I feel that all you mentioned above should be permissible Jessie.

Maybe y'all could just call it "hl1 remake" and say "anything goes."

Engine requirements, goldsourse, source and GO...

Pick 2 or 3 months and say "no extensions whatsoever."

I gotta learn to import models and everything for this one on a limited time budget. I doubt i'll be able to make anything of my expectations in time but I will try. I already have it designing away in my head. It'd be for one dot six.

Okay, here is the plan:

Engine: Goldsource
Mod: Doesn“t matter.
Rules: Recreate a deathmatchmap, also you are allowed to expand it.
You can make it a deathmatch map, bomb/defuse, capture the flag or
singleplayer map
Time: When Posted by Penguinboy it starts 3 month deadline.

What you can win: I will offer a random good rated Game, maybe someone
else also want to send in some prices.

If someone want to adjust/change this, feel free to do it.

@Trempler:

A few notes:
- I'd be happy to allow Source (someone might want it, even though no-one ever seems to go for it)
- "you are allowed to expand it" is very loose phrasing. Naturally, there's leeway in creating a remake, but it has to be better defined. Depending on how someone is crafting their remake, they may not even be doing it in such a way that the term "expand" makes sense.
- Given how much enthusiasm there's been lately, maybe 2 months would be more apt. Best listen to the people on that one, though.
- The official competitions don't tend to have prizes in that sense, I think. (Right? Could be wrong, it's been a while.)

Obviously "Re-invent a HLDM classic" is a pretty broad concept. If not a rule, then I think it's important to drive the point that no matter how you do it or what form the end result takes, the goal is to make a map with the same feel as the original, whether through aesthetics, gameplay or design.

That's the exact part that I found so appealing about the Re-invent a CS classic competition. You weren't simply remaking the map; you were using elements of that map's design to inform the elements of a wholly new map. Much prefer this to simply remaking a map verbatim.

I'm so onboard, and I'll throw £30 of Steam games into the prize pool.

Where would the cs 1.6 executable be located? It seems to be missing.

Oh, you use hl's... Teh Hammre! - :hammer:

Edit: I feel like a bad ass, my latest cs fgd. from my last computer wouldn't transfer with all its data fsr. so I copied it as a text file and pasted it into the fgd. on my new computer to have it work.

Also, I installed only the zhlt fgd at first to see its own entities separately.

If I'm understanding correctly, you can remake any GoldSrc engine game level, in GoldSrc?

I like the idea, but also I'd like to see more restrictions, e.g., you have 5 hldm/cs/sp/etc maps to choose from, to re-theme/remake/expand any way you like.

Also maybe have it so participants have to declare what map they plan on recreating to register for the compo--which also might help shame some of us into completing it wink-wink - ;)

Also too I agree with Jesse, opening it up to Source seems like a waste of time and anachronistic at this point--for the vast majority TWHL crowd at least.

Prizes are fine, but they never seem to help entice people to enter compos; the old competitions were always about the prestige of that coveted profile medal smile - :)

I think the Mod team should have final say on the rules and whatnot, and it be on their shoulders to make sure this compo is amazing, successful and launches a thousand years of successful future contests. [/no pressure]

I don't think we need to limit the maps. Game, perhaps. I think HLDM limits it nicely. No need to do it further than that. Odds are no-one will remake frenzy, but they should be allowed to if they want to.

Are we getting our official brief, and who out there is thinking of joining up? I don't have a lot of time atm, but I'm really excited to start working on it.

Also, anyone care to share what hldm map your choosing? I gonna replay some of the old HLDM maps tonight and try to choose one..

Before I post something official have a look at this and let me know if it's okay:

Competition 34 - Half-Life Re-imagined

Choose a map from Half-Life 1 and remix it in an interesting way. Your entry must resemble the original map in an obvious way - whether it be in aesthetics, gameplay or design.

The key is to create a map that feels like the original version, without simply cloning it. We're looking for a new spin on the maps that we all know and love.

Examples:
- Choose a singleplayer chapter and make a new level for it with the same ambience and style
- Use the layout of a multiplayer map and texture it in a unique way
- Turn a singleplayer map into a multiplayer map, or vice-versa
- Take the major gameplay elements from a map and make a new map that uses those same elements
- Use your imagination! Surprise us!

Rules:

You must include a readme in your entry!

A readme is a text file (usually named readme.txt) containing your TWHL username, the name of your entry, the game the entry is for (not just the game engine, the game as well), and any additional information you want to add.

Please also tell us which map you are remaking, and include some screenshots or a link to a video of the original map to make judging easier.

1. Your entry can be for the Steam version of any Valve Source or Goldsource game. The judges have them all!
2. The judges realize the limitations of the GoldSource and Source engines. Entries from different engines will be judged fairly.
3. Custom content is allowed, but custom code is not.
4. Any custom content should be included with the entry in the correct folder structure, or embedded into the BSP file itself. A mini-mod package is also permitted.
5. Entries must be zipped. Do not upload the uncompressed .bsp file.
6. An entry must run without error! We will not chase authors if an entry doesn't work.

Time limit: 100 years 3 months plus a billion extensions

Prizes:
1st: Archie's soul and some Steam games or something I guess
2nd: Ant's soul and a telegram from the queen
3rd: Urby's soul and a miniature cheese

I'm 1000% onboard. Considering either Crossfire, Bootcamp, Lambda Bunker or Subtransit at the moment as they give me the most feels from when I first discovered half-life.

Also possibly a deathmatch version of the Garg chamber in Power Up..

Been getting some sizing and positioning info from a decompilation of the map I'll be redoing. Not sure where to draw the line on replication vs reimagining tongue - :P I guess that's the whole idea of this competition though, right? Striking the balance between nostalgia and innovation...

Oh, I plan to decompile whatever map I end up doing, and I think you'd be foolish not to use it as your basemap wink-wink - ;)

Been playing all the original HLDM maps, and gonna keep doing so until one really jumps out as the "right" one, i.e., I know what I want to do, just not sure which map will work best.
may even start playing the SP maps and use one of those if I can't make any of the DM ones work

PB: I plan on using GoldSrc engine for my entry, but am I correct in understanding if I wanted to reboot a HL1 mp/sp map to CSGO, that would be fine too?

Yep, you could make an entry for CSGO if you wanted. Just the map you choose to remake must be from HL1 but the entry can be for whatever game.
