I'm getting this error when I try to compile my map. When I go to the brush numbers stated it takes me to a completely empty part of the map. Solutions please?

According to Tommy14's list of mapping and compiling errors, you have a damaged brush. Use the Go To Brush Number option to find the brush and replace it.

First go to the brush (find it by number), then delete it. Even though it takes you to a completely empty part of the map, the problem brush still gets selected. Just delete it and continue mapping.

Okay so now I type in the brush number and it brings me to a fairly big ceiling brush. Any explanation to why this didn't happen before?

(BTW yes I deleted it and now the map works, thanks people)

Maybe an edge or a vertex was mangled inproperly somehow. You can sometimes spot this in the editor you're using if a part of your brush looks like it's sucking in itself, kind of like this:

(This example is maybe a bit exaggerated since they may be small enough to be hard to spot at first.)

Usually brushes become problematic through vertex manipulation when certain planes become malformed (say, a square plane where a single vertex gets moved perpendicularly, thus causing the plane to become non-flat, which is a big no-no). Some other actions can cause it too under certain circumstances, such as skewing or the clipping tool. Another possible cause is concave brushes, which the engine can't handle. Think making a flat pac-man shape out of a single brush. You would have to divide the shape into two (or more) brushes such that any one brush never had a vertex with an internal angle of 180 degrees or more.

I'm probably forgetting some of the proper mathematical terms.

Hasn't anyone mentioned Alt+P which opens the check for problems dialog? That would probably pick up bad brushes before you compile.

Yes, Alt+P is usually pretty good about picking that stuff up. Usually.
