@Skals: "50 dollars is like 1-3 days wages."

What? More like 1-3 hours :|

In my first semester of uni, I fucked up my timetable so bad. I don't know if you choose your lecture times the same way I had to at my uni, but here's what I ended up doing after that first semester:

1. Register for subjects well in advance
2. Once the class times are announced for all subjects, make a draft timetable with the fewest early starts, late finishes, and gaps between classes
3. Get up at the time when class registration opens (usually was 8am a week or two before the semester started) and help with the DDOS effort on the registration server as everybody rushes to get in first

For me it ended up being a competition - be faster than everybody else! By the end of my uni career I was able to get two days off each week for most semesters. My worst timetable had a 4 hour gap between classes, that one sucked. (It took me almost 2 hours to get home, so I had to hang around the uni. Usually I just found a good place to sit and play my DS.)

Listerine contains alcohol, which is why it might be useful for other things besides mouth washing. However you might want to be careful because mouthwash containing alcohol has been linked to mouth cancer. Best to use a proper alcohol-free mouthwash that will usually do a better job of it as well.

Haha, trying to tell Huntey that alcohol is bad is almost as bad as trying to convert him to christianity!

IMO, all things in moderation. And if you don't like something, that's nice for you, but don't try and convert people :P

Oh, and happy birthday Huntey! You're younger than me but I feel you already have a much more fulfilling life and career than I do. I'm somewhat jealous ^_^

Yeah, that's the version I was on before. I'll downgrade to those drivers again because they seemed better. I'll try your trick of moving the install drive as well. I'm due for a CPU and RAM upgrade and a Windows reinstall soon, might bite the bullet on those and see if it's any better after that.

EDIT: Still crashing after doing both those things. The worst part is that you don't get any of your experience points if the game crashes :|

New drivers came out last week, I'll try those but I don't really expect they'll do anything, I'm unlucky like that :P

EDIT: Nope, if anything, it's even worse than it was before :/

@Urby: No error message, just dumps back to the desktop. The game is still running though, from there I have to alt-tab to get my mouse control back and kill the game from the task manager. Google hasn't returned any useful info :(

I don't regret buying it, but I certainly won't be buying any DLC for it if it's not stable on my machine.

Invite accepted Blitz :)
Ant doesn't have BF3, he only has an account from when he played the beta.

EDIT: BF3 is quite unstable for me :(
My "Quits" stat is at 55%, that's how often it crashes back to the desktop before the round finishes. Lame!

Except Worms Armageddon, that works just fine no matter where you are. We've been getting back into that recently, you should join us again Huntey!

Also, give me the low down on how to join the TWHL platooney. If I can't be there in (virtual) person, I can at least be there in spirit. Origin (sigh) username is Pebguibnoy.

...Nah, it's because I've had an itch for shootering and no game I have at the moment can scratch it. However I don't see how I could play on your team with the lag and all >_>

I use a Firefox addon called FEBE which does scheduled backups of all Firefox data and puts it in a single, easy-to-backup file. I've got mine to back up weekly, keeping the 5 most recent backups just in case. I use it every time I have to format and reinstall, and it's never let me down :)

Visual Studio 2008 uses VB.NET 9.0, which is .NET 3.5. If you were using VB 6.0, you would be using Visual Studio 6 which was released in 1998. I think you might be a little confused :)

Anyway, assuming you're using WinForms, it's not optimised to do animated graphics. It's not difficult to hook into a control's "Paint" event and do your drawing on a lower level, I've done this and performance is reasonable. The rendering issues you were getting with transparent images is probably because you didn't set the control's "DoubleBuffered" property to true. 3D capabilities are available in .NET via frameworks like XNA (for Direct3D) and OpenTK (for OpenGL).

@Stu: VB.NET 6.0 doesn't exist, the first version of VB.NET is 7.0. It's the direct successor to VB6.
Commented 11 years ago2012-08-30 12:35:23 UTC in journal: #7954 Comment #60978
@Jeff: If it's VB.NET than it's exactly the same compiled code as anything written in C#. I can assure you that it can render far more than just sprites without hassle. If it's VB6 or under, then you might be right as I've never used it, but I would be quite surprised if even that didn't have reasonable graphics capabilities.

@Striker: Even though most pseudorandom number generators use timestamps (among other things), you won't get similar results from similar timeframes unless you generate two in the exact same millisecond using two generators that have been created with with the same initial seed value. I would say that the similarity of results you're seeing is based on a small sample size.

Don't listen to these guys, cheap or expensive, all motherboards serve the exact same purpose. Obviously you don't want a cheap piece of crap, but after a certain price point it's just marketing buzzwords and people get suckered into that stuff. No need to spend more than $150 on a motherboard. A quick Google shows that it's around that range anyway, so good choice :)

Of course if you had 10 hard drives or wanted to do SLI or something unusual, that would be a completely different story.

If you go with Dreamhost, can you use my referral code? It costs nothing extra for the person signing up but it pays for a year of TWHL's hosting :)

The deal is: unlimited everything, one domain name incuded, for $10 a month. It's a pretty good deal.

I really found the final chapters to be the easiest of the entire game :P

I believe it went something like this:
1. Grenade launcher
2. EMP grenades
3. Ability to clone objects (specifically, the grenades)
4. 4 ICE picks for instant final boss killifying

Stojke: Java was never appropriate for web programming and Flash is quickly becoming very undesirable for new websites. Lajron has already made the better suggestion, which is Javascript and jQuery.

Urby: Even though you hated your job, being without one is even worse. Sucks real bad :(
I would suggest you apply for jobs in bigger corporations - enterprise environments have their own problems, but usually you don't have to deal with moron clients. Also, the bigger the company, the more job security you have, typically.
If you want to expand your skills, Javascript is a MUST HAVE for every web designer. Go straight to jQuery, don't bother learning plain old Javascript, it's basically useless. After you're comfortable with that you might want to learn server-side programming with PHP (+ an MVC framework) or ASP.NET MVC. It's a big jump though, because you'd also need to learn about database development and SQL.
