Fun from start to finish. The unforgiving bit is why it's so good compared to todays games. You are never safe. It's relentless, challenging, terrifying... and awesome.

Yeah, you'll notice a couple of ideas that made the jump from System Shock 2 to Bioshock, but otherwise it's a very different and frankly much deeper game.

It's closer to a predecessor of Deus Ex than Bioshock, really, and it shares a lot of similarities with Looking Glass' previous games.

The fact that it was made by both Irrational (of Bioshock) and Looking Glass (my favourite developer) is icing on the cake.

It was pretty much the most lowbrow keynote and trailer imaginable. It will sell like hotcakes though, because boobs. So yeah, it's the perfect marketing for The Core!

That is a very uncomfortable picture of Rob.

I think you should make a new trailer in the same style of the Far Cry 3 E3 one. That was a crowd pleaser. Here, I'll get you started with the script:

INTRO (FADE FROM BLACK):
Suddenly... TITS. Tits everywhere.

From here I imagine there's some shooting, lots of fucks, and maybe the promise of more tits. Popularity for The Core will skyrocket, I promise you.

The Bends through to Kid A. Love those three albums, and a few tracks off Pablo and Amnesiac.

They've changed a lot since then, and I'm not a fan of their new noisy electronic sound. Plenty of other people are, though, so good on 'em. A lot of popular 90's bands have only grown more irrelevant or collapsed under their own smugness, so at least we can say Radiohead continue to adapt and grow. Into what, I'm not sure. :P

Enough time for goofing off though. Get back to work!

I'm usually up around the same time as you, Urby. Though my first alarm goes off at 6:30 and I have one more every 10 minutes until I get up at 7. :P

I stay up late because being at work all day effin' sucks and I just want to play my games and watch my shows for as long as possible when I'm home!

You can try putting -d3d in the launch options.

I did some testing and the d3d, soft and gl launch commands seem a little buggy.

Pretty objective | Not very objective | What does that mean?

Choose wisely!

I played Bioshock first, but I wasn't really a fan. I can see all the things they ported over from System Shock now, but it's all just surface similarities. The depth of System Shock 2 isn't really there, it's a shame.

I doubt Bioshock Infinite will do it either, but that is looking interesting for other reasons. People are more interested in black and white moral choices these days. I miss the ambiguity of choice from these oldies.

Emulation is good, but the consoles are so much better.

I'd love to own every old console I grew up with or ever just touched, and build myself a nerd shrine of 90's gaming. Don't judge me!

I think your situation was cooler, though.

Soup: Cool, thanks. Fish at the ready.

I've listened to those samples, and I don't mind the Distance Remix at all, that stuff is pretty light and kind of hypnotizing. Diesel not Petrol though, sounds like it belongs with the other brostep samples (except for the slower pace), really not my thing. I guess I need to train myself to pick up on the intricacies of this music, but those really generic screechy and distortion sounds brostep seems to use really get to me. I think they ruined that song Urby just posted, which I was enjoying until about the minute mark.

Chased down the original version of Falling and didn't mind that either. Seems there's a very fine line between the types of dubstep I can listen to, but you've made a distinction for me. I have an idea where I should be looking now, thanks!

Woah. In-depth. I'll give those a listen when I get home.

Indeed.

I have to admit I'm completely lost when trying to categorize music. I only think in very broad genres, and always assumed dubstep to be it's own small, noisy beast. I like being a chillout man because all a song has to do is make me relax, and I'll say it fits the term. :P

Out of curiosity, do any of these songs really fit the bill, or are people just grasping at straws? I couldn't properly check those songs at work (no sound), but I think they're some of the more hectic tunes from the games.
Commented 12 years ago2012-02-28 04:01:24 UTC in journal: #7649 Comment #66838
I'm a little confused by how broad dubstep is considered to be now. When I first learned of it, all I heard was the really bad radio trash like Skrillex and whatever else marketing bufoons picked up on.

But lately I've read people classifying some of my favourite soundtracks (like Unreal Tournament 1-3) as having strong dubstep elements, when I've always thought of them as just blanket electronica or minimal drum and bass.

So yeah, I'm kind of confused. It seems like it's something that really recently surged in popularity, and now a lot of older things are "it" by definition? Or am I totally wrong about that?

When I think "dubstep" I do really tend to think of the awful stuff, but I realise I'm pretty ignorant on the stuff.
