I've found that if you don't even have any inspiration, you probably shouldn't be mapping or doing any form of art ;)

you should really put that story on our tune, simon bates loves people like you

pff only months? Way back when, had to work 26 hours down pit a day, got home from work, my dad used to take us and kill us, with a huge sword. Had to eat cold gravel in the morning and we lived in a swamp.

DC++ is a more tight-nit community, you know who you are getting the files from and they know you. Stops any copyright types trying to get in as they HAVE to share legitimate files and be uploading, thus they must break the law to catch you or some other nonsense :)

Plus the network is full of legitimate shares, never had any problems so far and can get anything you want quickly (for the rarer stuff use e-mule)

the player speed is dependent on what mod you are playing, (and if not halflife, your class or weapon or some other nonsense) if you are wall strafing, bhopping, etc

I tried to create a definative guide a while back, along with the exact jump distance for every class in tfc, hopefully then expanding it for other mods. Of course my research was totally pointless as nothing worked :(

I only say p2p would die because any sort of file sharing will probably die, DRM means no more media unless you've bought it from somewhere

If I get bored of a particular map (well, when I used to map before Steam), I set it aside and create some fun random little multiplayer map to force upon players on my tfc server. I then returned to the other map, tended to give me fresh new ideas too!

in What are clip brushes? Post #13526
CLIP
can't walk through
can shoot through

will not stop leaks, but will stop someone swimming off into the sky, use it to stop players from getting to parts of the map you dont want them to and to speed up gameplay by removing any unnecessary edges on walls. There must be a tutorial on it around here.

Never got around to it as it seemed as simple as HINT's :-)(ed:Andy)

look at the first screenshot, the 'seam' i'm talking about is noticeable because it lines up with the planks that are higher up. Look on the rock walls for the line that runs all the way around on the same level as those higher planks!

you can't really run steam through 56k so I wouldn't worry too much about those poor saps (i.e. me) anymore!

2000 is rediculous, find a way of lowering them to an absolute max of 1200 for a scene with no action whatsoever in it.

in What does VIS actually do? Post #12984
fgs never ignore VIS, if you cant compile with fast vis (which usually takes a few seconds for huge maps) then don't compile at all as the end result will be unplayable

you already pimped this in someone elses thread, die!

Looks good, but that same repeating wood texture should be worked on like I've done here using a model (omg teh hypocrasy!) http://www.jobsmaps.com/maps/screenshots/theonlywayisup/theonlywayisup03.jpg

I don't know what the r_speeds are like, but the above would probably reduce them enough to consider 'fleshing out' the rock walls, they're a little flat at the moment with a giant horizontal seam running around them!

Make the player 'feel' like they are in that room more, don't bother with any echo crap as it invariably never works but a basic haze or some skylights could really add the area.

I know this is a bit overkill for critisism, I'm just throwing some ideas up! :)

in Question about multiplayer bsps Post #12833
short answer, you can only compile the wad into the bsp
Stick everything else in a directory structured zip file relative to halflife (eg with directories like tfc/models/mapname)

Try not to put 3 gig of wav files in for l33t musak that some people think makes a map worth playing
