What for?

I'm going to print the mod name in the map description if that's what you mean (the green "S" for Spirit isn't entirely self-explanatory) and I'm going to add an extra field for where people've specified "Other" as the mod icon.

I like the tutorial award :glad:
  • Allow someone to close or delete their own thread.
  • A rating system where you can only vote once (Only on Complete maps)
Those are two undrastic (not a word) measures, but I have a small suggestion that will probably get throw down right away:

Color code each page. The main page could stay orange, but for example, special pages like Map Vault could be blue instead of orange.

I understand that this take a long time, but it would help the quality of TWHL be more eye pretty, attracting new members and such.

Also, after looking at the HL1 questions, I see that a lot of the threads are just explaining how to do something.

Why not have another Forum called "Mapper Tips" pr something where anyone can post their tips! We cannot have a ton of tutorials on easy simple things, so a tips place would be great!
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-18 14:44:32 UTC Post #121871
And what about only being able to rate unfinished maps once!(you forgot them) :P
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-18 15:01:05 UTC Post #121876
You will only be able to vote for any map once in the 'Vault/user, and must leave a comment with a vote. I'll make sure people don't make stupid 'asasast'-style comments just to spam votes.

Colour coding... change what?

I'd also thought of a forum/section called "Mapper Tips" myself a few days ago :). I mean, there doesn't even seem to be anywhere where newbies are told to use ZHLT, just links to it!
I like the tutorial award
I thought, and Ant and Rabid agreed, that people deserved at least as much recognition for writing a good tutorial as for being helpful in the forums or MV.

I don't think that's a good idea. Can think of many reasons why.

What, Rabid?
"There won't be an edit button in TWHL. Period."
Actually, I think I'll make it so you can edit a post if it has no replies after it. I can't see any problems that way. Previewing will be sorted too, though.

well, I'm glad to see my points have already been taken into consideration ;)

I only wrote the color coding thing because when I thought about what good changes the site could have, I noticed the same sickly orange color I've been looking at for ages...

although, it does remind me of Gordon's suit... wow... the game would be so different if he had like a green suit...
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 01:24:56 UTC Post #121932
I like the orange. I have considered implementing something I proposed to atom a long time ago, user selection of colour themes. Wouldn't be very hard, just loading different sets of images and a different CSS page.

About your - "Mapper Tips" idea Seventh. tbh newbies post in the help forums and there people explain to get ZHLT etc...
What I think would be more interesting is if each member could have their own little "map tips" sort of like the journal, this way the newbie to twhl can get direct tips from the person he looks up to. Just an idea, have no idea how it would work but maybe these could be advanced tips or long answers to a particular forum thread. Also if that thread was deleted due to spam or w/e then the newbie can ask the replier to post in his "map tips". :aghast:
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 01:44:49 UTC Post #121937
Yeah, but should we really have to re-tell everyone who comes through about ZHLT? If we weren't bothered about stuff like that, we wouldn't have any tutorials.

To-do list so far:

[quote]General
New smilies in journals;
More special login messages;
PMs;
Seperate HL/Source tutorials;
News archives;
Proper tutorial proposal system linked to special forum;
Journal limiting (forbidding journal posts in quick succession).

Forums
Allow editing of most recent post to topic if yours;
Icon for closed threads;
Previewing;
Stickies;

'Vault
Only allow votes with comment, from logged-in users;
One vote/user;
No voting for own maps;
No rating for Problem or Example maps;
Require screenshot and description for "completed";
"Mod" text field in Map Info (for clarity and modicon "Other").

Modding
Journal modding;
MV comment modding (by MV permissions, !forum ~).

I vote for Doodle to change back to his original avatar :heart:

How are people's names changing?!
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 02:08:44 UTC Post #121942
THINK BEFORE YOU POST AND YOU WON'T NEED TO DOUBLE-POST!

Do you mean, my shortening of m0p, Ant, and Rabid's names to their modern selves? Simple database manipulation, why? I'm not making a habit of it, but they've all been here a long time and their forum names were a bit long. This way, all the forum mods fit on one line on the forum listing page, too :).

Why wont we have icons near the valut section's name that means that there is a new map in that section! Just like in the forums! :nuts:
And could you add awards to completed/example/unfinished! :o So if the map is realy good/usefull(recived an award) an icon will show up near it's name and people will now know thats it's good! :) And why can't people vote on example maps? :

Thats a fine to-do list,

But what about the "Delete or close your own thread" idea?
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 10:10:57 UTC Post #122031
delete and close is too mod'ish
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 10:12:54 UTC Post #122034
What brought me to come up with this idea was creating a thread in the HL1 mapping questions, only to figure it out minutes later. Instead of wasting the moderators time by asking the thread to be deleted, it would help if all I had to do was delete it myself.
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 13:30:31 UTC Post #122070
I appreciate the thought, but it really isn't any bother :).

Ant and Rabid are both against the idea, anyway. Thanks for the input, though.

You'll notice the new thread state indicators. Sorry to confuse you; here's a nice key:
User posted image
- Normal thread;
User posted image
- Thread with new posts;
User posted image
- Locked thread.
User posted image
- Sticky thread;
User posted image
- Sticky with new posts;
User posted image
- Locked sticky.
They'll all be made nicer shortly. They're just placeholders, really.

They'll be better. The locked and stickied things look too similar for my liking at the moment.

Added a "propose tutorial" page. Look under the Tutorials heading on the nav. bar.

Which means they're copyrighted, Trapt. HLFallout owns them. If someone creates something similar, we could use them.
is that ok? i coloured them in twhl style :x maybe make them smaller?

Suggestion, change the green to red, take out the gray dot all together, and change the locked dot to a little box that says locked or something.
Green... gah.

A new maps box on the front page would be nice.

I dont know if anyone has already mentioned this: In the map vault, we can currently sort the maps by...

Name | Date | Modified Date | Rating

Is there any way to be able to sort them by game/mod ? I think it's a good idea that would please people who ask for a separate source map vault. Instead, you could filter and check all the HLDM, HL2DM maps etc

Good to see that you are making the forums more organized :D

You are going to replace the colors with something more inovative right?

Im also suprised that something I said (tips / minituts) is actually being implemented :o

Keep up the good work dude! :biggrin:
Posted 19 years ago2005-07-19 19:58:26 UTC Post #122148
Sorry to give yet another suggestion, but if you weren't already planning to, you should add a color key for what all the colors mean, I doubt everyone who reads the forums reads this topic just to see what the colors mean.

Wow, this is a massive flood os requests, I'm glad I don't have control over TWHL.

I meant not having dots next to some. It'd make the alignment as messy as it used to be.

There will definitely be a key on the forum list page.

Kasperg: easy, and will be done, particularly now that there's a decent selection of mods.

WCD: they're all pretty easy ;).
