A neat look at the design process of Cendark3 - one of my maps for The Core. Note that this video begins when the map is around 2 days into development already, then continues through three days of additions and tweaks.

I really like this method of showing changes, and I'll definitely be doing it on future maps!

(Edited with treatment)
"Congratulations, your submission for the TV factual Pitch has been shortlisted. The panel would like to hear more from you so you will pitch your idea in the following session:

Wed 28th March
CCA5
14.00 - 16.30
PERFECT PITCH: BROADCAST COMMISSIONING IN SCOTLAND"

So apparently I will be pitching a programme idea I had directly to Ewan Angus (Commissioning Editor, BBC Scotland), Harry Bell (Creative Director, Tern Television) and Nick Low (Managing Director, Demus Productions).

To put it simply:
HnnngngkRHAsjrgrvjspvoszpozkmsxc (nervous breakdown)

Here's the treatment I submitted that got shortlisted.

‘Brought Up to Believe’
A one-off 30 minute factual programme for the Creative Loop

As scientific innovations become more ground-breaking and more questions get answered, the world is starting to rely less and less on the outdated beliefs of organised religion. In 2005, a Eurostat poll of the UK found that only 38% of Scots believe in a god and in the seven years since then we can only assume that the number has decreased further. Even rarer is the number of people who follow their religion to the letter – most choosing a compromise between belief and modern understanding. So what would make an ordinary Scottish boy in his late teens suddenly decide to become a creationist?

Douglas Pollock, a twenty year old Glaswegian has always believed in the Christian God, but only recently decided to interpret his religion literally and became a self-proclaimed creationist. Following this personal revelation, he spent a year in Ukraine conducting missionary work emphasising the massive change in his life.

From living a relatively normal life, Douglas has now chosen to live his life under an extremely strict rule book and takes no shame in trying to spread his new-found beliefs. From being an open-minded, bright lad he now openly denounces homosexuality and promotes abstinence.

Brought Up to Believe will explore the reasons behind Douglas’ sudden transformation and will follow him on his return to Ukraine as we find out what it’s like to go abroad to evangelise and aim to discover why he feels the need to spread his interpretation of the Christian Bible. We will also briefly explore the morality of children being raised in religious families and whether or not they really have a choice in their faith. Being raised in an extremely Christian household where he would receive a new bible every year for Christmas from his grandparents and being told to attend church every Sunday must have seriously influenced Douglas, so is it morally correct to indoctrinate kids from such a young age?

As the topics covered can be somewhat controversial, the programme will spark debate and discussion which could be facilitated in an online forum. Religion is always a relevant topic and it still plays a massive role in worldwide politics and culture – people always love to have an opinion about it. There is also plenty of room to expand upon the basic idea of the programme and perhaps get a series exploring the same topic from the viewpoint of various different religions.

The target audience is men and women in their late teens to early thirties of all social grades and should attract an audience of both religious and atheist viewers as both would potentially be interested in the reasons behind Douglas’ revelation. BBC Three at 20:00 would be an ideal slot for such a programme as the BBC Three audience is around Douglas’ age and the channel often airs a factual show during this after-dinner slot.

Stylistically the programme would be a mix of guerrilla-style filming while following Douglas in Ukraine and traditional sit-down interviews with his family, minister and other relevant characters. A presenter’s voice-over would be used to transition segments and Douglas would be prompted on-the-fly by the director during his mission, questioning, but not undermining his actions. Visually similar to docs like ‘1 Giant Leap’ and ‘Brave New World’ with some stylistic visual effects used to add flair.

I was at a hostage situation today. It was at Diageo bottling plant, just 10 mins from my house and the alarm bell went off at 10am sharp, shortly after I had arrived. There was a police armed response team, two fire engines and two ambulances on the scene within minutes and CCTV footage captured the gunman (an employee at the plant) throwing around another employee at gun-point because the other employee had allegedly slept with his wife.

Why was I there? The CCTV footage was mine, prepared last night in After Effects.

It was a big corporate training exercise - none of the staff had been told it was happening and I, along with three other camera ops were hired to film it all and I was also asked to make the aforementioned CCTV footage. The plant was evacuated and the management team were driven to an off-site location several miles away to go into action-meetings (Which I was also filming). They had liasons from all the emergency services and the entire event was treated as a real incident, so everything was by the book and entirely serious. There was something very cool about filming a meeting in which terms like "flank routes" "choke-points" and "structural integrity" were thrown around without a hint of irony.

Also there's just something awesome about filming police in full tactical gear.

The gunman was detained at 13:35 and there were no serious casualties. The hostage was treated for minor injuries sustained during the police raid.

Edited yet again with Day 4. You won't see much of Archie over this week because I am currently working as 1st AC on a high-budget production being filmed in a full studio lot (Scotland's equivalent of Hollywood.)
It's a horror film, so there are loads of night shots and as such the hours are crazy. Some days I'll be sleeping at the studio.
I'll be taking photos every day.

It's so surreal. There's an entire fictional Glasgow street built here. It looks totally believably until you go in the houses and just find plywood.

Here's one of the studio buildings. There are six of them and each one has anywhere up to 30 different "room" locations inside. From pubs to bedsits.

Let me know what you want to see in the comments. I have not had to sign an NDA (this is the first production I've worked on since I started making money in this industry that I can show you everything).

I was really busy today so I didn't get a spare moment to go around other departments, sorry Captain Terror.
More tomorrow.

DAY 3!

Crazy busy today. We were behind schedule due to heavy rain, so I've been non-stop for about 10 hours. So tired ;_;

So Iowa appears to be the first major campaign spot in deciding the republican candidate for the 2012 American election, yes?

As a mere foreign non-American I could be totally wrong, but it almost seems like all three major candidates - Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney - are more interested in preventing gays and foreigners from living happily in America than, say, deciding what action to take about the economic crisis or how they'd settle tensions with Russia, NoKo and China.

I'm sure I must be mistaken, because in this day and age it would be insanity to be corner-stoning a presidential campaign on evangelical nonsense, wouldn't it. That'd be ridiculous of me to think, wouldn't it. Arguably the most powerful country in the world bickering over fags and blacks rather than the 99% protests or NoKo's refusal to stop their nuclear armament program. That'd be mental of me to think.

Thank god I've probably just got my facts wrong.

I just got a set of Audio-Technica ATH-T500 cans.

I literally cannot put into words how good they are. It's like I'm rediscovering all my music for the first time. The dynamic range is so, so wide and the sound is so open. Best cans I've ever owned.
Best cans I've ever experienced, in fact, and I've tried some that cost a considerable amount more.

SO COMFY as well and the noise cancellation is unbelievable.

Thanks dad :')

Looking for some constructive feedback on my showreel.
This was rather hastily put together for a specific job application and as such I didn't have time to get copyright clearance to include a lot of the commercial programs I've shot which is annoying.

Still, let me know what you think.

Political minds of TWHL, I implore you to watch and like this video! Upcoming class elections in my college will be based entirely on number of "likes" on our various party political broadcasts.

Don't do it for me, do it for the future of the nation.

Unrelated, I had a fun text conversation this morning. I'm in blue.

Sooty, one of my two cats recently got diagnosed with a tumour in her throat. Today it was clear that she could no longer swallow food and the vet had to put her down.
She was 19 - in the family since I was one year old.

Gunna be honest. Not coping too well.

Can't believe I get away with this shit.
Just got Arkham City, Crysis 2 and Space Marine courtesy of gaming magazine PC Gamer (UK) for doodling a picture of Half-Life for them in MS Paint.
I've now received about 12 AAA games and my £1500 ($2,420 USD) PC from them over the past 2 years. I think I might be taking advantage of them.
