Don't let the water fool you - the competition only covers HL1 maps as originals :P With that in mind, it kinda looks like the Surface Tension map where you start in the pipes and canal before coming up to fight the tank and a bunch of grunts. But only kinda.

I've considered it, but I kinda don't want to spoil the surprise. :P Besides, mine looks a whole lot like the original right now.

Is there any way we can anonymously list the maps we're working on? I'm curious what the spread of maps are.

Been getting some sizing and positioning info from a decompilation of the map I'll be redoing. Not sure where to draw the line on replication vs reimagining :P I guess that's the whole idea of this competition though, right? Striking the balance between nostalgia and innovation...

Upon watching that, it's occurred to me that I had no idea what a surf_ map was.

But, uh, recreating a classic HLDM map as one?... Could be interesting.

Also too I agree with Jessie, opening it up to Source seems like a waste of time and anachronistic at this point--for the vast majority TWHL crowd at least.
I'd be happy to allow Source (someone might want it, even though no-one ever seems to go for it)
I don't think we need to limit the maps. Game, perhaps. I think HLDM limits it nicely. No need to do it further than that. Odds are no-one will remake frenzy, but they should be allowed to if they want to.

Strider and I am able to judge the compo if Jessie wants to enter.
Up to you, I'm just saying I can do it if it is needed. I intend to at least try to make an entry either way :P

@Trempler:

A few notes:
 • I'd be happy to allow Source (someone might want it, even though no-one ever seems to go for it)
 • "you are allowed to expand it" is very loose phrasing. Naturally, there's leeway in creating a remake, but it has to be better defined. Depending on how someone is crafting their remake, they may not even be doing it in such a way that the term "expand" makes sense.
 • Given how much enthusiasm there's been lately, maybe 2 months would be more apt. Best listen to the people on that one, though.
 • The official competitions don't tend to have prizes in that sense, I think. (Right? Could be wrong, it's been a while.)
Obviously "Re-invent a HLDM classic" is a pretty broad concept. If not a rule, then I think it's important to drive the point that no matter how you do it or what form the end result takes, the goal is to make a map with the same feel as the original, whether through aesthetics, gameplay or design.

I mean, I suppose there's nothing to say a remake of a hldm map couldn't be remade in CS, or CSGO, or turned into a little singleplayer HL map...

I think if there's an issue, it's buttoning down what exactly you can do in a remake. Must it maintain the theme? Must it maintain the general layout? Must it only maintain key components, like the bounce pads in bounce?
I daresay much of this will be up to individual interpretation.

I may have misunderstood slightly, but I think what you described is essentially the idea of Map From Base, just with a specific theme. I'm not sure either that or Map From Layout would work great with a theme requirement because you would end up with a lot of very similar maps.

For reference, I consider the types here to be:
 • Map From Layout (but not necessarily with floor heights spelled out)
 • Map From Base (I know there's been a better example in the past, but I don't think it was an official compo and thus I couldn't be assed searching for it. Basically that idea but with more freedom of structure/detail)
Restrictions are nice, but after a certain point I feel they hinder creativity more than promote it. It's just a matter of balance between freedom and direction. I like Map From Layout because it sets one up with a clear place to start, but leaves everything beyond that up to the mapper.

... Everything else aside, the community has been clamoring for a new official competition for 3 years now. If the power to create one has to be given to someone else (temporarily if need be) for it to happen, perhaps that is something to consider.

I decided to go in and have a look at what the "special edition" of Skyrim offers. (I didn't buy it but I have it for some reason.) Also chose to take some directly comparable screenshots from it and its original to see the difference. (Both at highest settings.) Results:

Original:

Special Edition:
User posted image
Notes:
 • I'll say that even as someone who was playing Skyrim a lot more recently than most, I can't say the new one was appreciably better looking. Side by side, it's a little more obvious, but playing it?... It looks like Skyrim.
 • The special edition has some... strange depth-of-field stuff going on. It makes things look blurry at times they seem like they should not be. It was distracting, which is not good.
 • Got some rll bad framerates going during a section of that intro, which I can't say the original had. I haven't played beyond this screenshot, so I can't say if that's a frequent occurrence or not.
 • Again, didn't play beyond here, but from what I saw of the intro, in all other regards, it's the exact same game you'd be playing.
Anyway, that's my piece. I'm no huge fan of Skyrim in general, so take it as you will. If you had the choice though, I think I'd recommend the original.

I suspect some reasons no competitions have happened lately despite someone proposing one every month or so are:
 • Admins are busy and cannot/would not judge a competition
 • Few others offer to judge
 • Everyone acts all excited and yet only about four entries ever get produced
 • At least two of those inevitably require deadline extensions
 • Waiting until TWHL4
