Hammer 3.5 Beta for me. There's nothing wrong with it, only some features are missing. Hell of a lot better than the old Worldcraft. Update already! There are compatibility issues between Hammer and Worldcraft, so if you're submitting rmf's made in Worldcraft, most people will get some sort of error opening it in Hammer. Get with the times people!

All good ideas people. I sincerly hope that some of these are implemented. I would definately like to offer my services as a MV Mod if the idea goes ahead.
With the rating system however, what happens to those that have been here for a while/posted a lot? Do we all start at zero? (Or haven't I read enough of this thread?). Anywho, good to see that TWHL is moving ahead.

in Wad not found Post #45744
A WAD file contains textures for Counter-Strike, Half-Life etc.
valve/cs.wad
Something's not right there. According to my directory structure for CS (retail) it goes:

C:SIERRACounter Strikecstrike

The wad 'cstrike.wad' is there but not 'cs.wad'. You may have made an error when setting up Hammer for Counter-Strike. Are you using Steam? Try unpacking the gcf files with GCFScape (I think that's what it's called). If all fails, remove the wad from your Hammer list, or copy it into the directory it wants it to go in.

That sounds like a fair and just idea. I've seen too many maps having over 50 one star ratings when it's only been downloaded a few times. TWHL isn't dying. It just needs fine tuning. ;)

in Compiling Error i think..? Post #44964
There are definate limits when mapping in Half-Life. Half-Life is over 5 years old and as such, you will not be able to create extremly large and detailed maps. You have to find ways to imitate detail without pushing the constraints of the engine. Take a look at this to give a small idea at what you can do.

Extremly wise words indeed from Andy.

I'm not sure if I've been here long enough to really comment on too much anyway. I seem to recall in a forum somewhere that TWHL wasn't about creating a community for the best and most elite mappers from around the world. TWHL is for beginners. Sure it may get a little annoying sometimes but that is not a reason to intentional flame/spam/etc.

To pepper and VOX: Hope to see you guys in the future.

And a note to all: Keep it real. This is about Half-Life Mapping and that's how it should stay.

drag a big box over your map
Do NOT do this under any circumstances. I wouldn't make the outside walls func_wall. You need the walls to block VIS. Func_wall small objects like chairs, small buildings, other little bits of detail, etc.

in Memory Allocation error Post #44168
Good ol' Tommy has a reply:
Memory allocation failure

Description: The program failed to allocate a block of memory. Likely causes are (in order of likeliness):
 • Do not compile thru WC/Hammer F9 "running" - this hogs RAM. Instead use a front end or batch file to organize your compiling
 • The partition holding the swapfile is full (clean out your hard drive, empty trash, clear out unused files, purge your temp files folders and internet browsers temp files.)
 • Swapfile size is smaller than required (let swapfile be dynamicly allocated, do not set it too small yourself.)
 • Memory fragmentation (defrag your hard drive)
 • Heap corruption (reboot and try again. If you have old RAM, make sure it is seated well. check for viruses!).
 • On at least one occasion this was caused by a corrupt prefab.
 • On at least one occasion this was solved by removing a skybox and so making the level smaller.
Click on the object. Some white squares will surround it. Click on it again and the sqaures will turn to dots. By clicking and holding one of the dots you can rotate the cabinet. Hold the shift key down as well when you rotate it.

Just had a skim through the site.
What a load of crap. I mean really if they think that videogames influence the behaviours and actions of children then I think they have a serious problem. What children play and watch should be decided by parents if they're so concerned. Besides, its a bit hard to say that violence doesn't exist, considering the state of the world at the moment. I could rabble on forever about this but I can't be bothered. Excuse me while I go on a homicidal rage with a crowbar.

in Half-Life Block "carved" maps? Post #43130
And what are you doing decompiling valve's maps?
Anywho, I don't think that Valve carved any of their maps. You can tell this because sometimes you can see the shapes such as cylinder tunnels which don't appear the way that a carved tunnel would.

I think it'd be more impressive on the Half-Life engine rather than on Source. Everyone's gonna be releasing mods left right and centre when Half-Life 2 comes out and I'm willing to bet that the majority of them will be poor (not that I'm saying this one will be). I say stick to the Half-Life engine for now and finish it. When it's finished in Half-Life then you might consider making a Half-Life 2 version.
