in Black Mesa: Source video leaked Post #308861
Still not going to watch this one because of the spoilers. I don't want to see everything they've done until I have the mod in my hands. Also because one of the developers requested that anyone who hasn't seen the video not watch it, and the team is trying to get the videos taken down.

Of course, now that it's so widespread, they can't take down all the mirrors.

Blender's... unconventional, but once you get the hang of it it's quite an efficient workflow. You just need to learn the hotkeys.

Sort of. I sort of learned Blender.

I may enter this. Maybe. Probably not.
EDIT: Nope, didn't read the fined print. Not eligible until well after the closing deadline.

Why would a heavily modified quake engine have the exact same named subdirectories, even the valve folder?
...That, I don't know. If the engine has a valve folder where all the content is kept, then I guess it is goldsource.
As for sprites, as Urby suggested, Spirit is a good choice, but presumably you can't use it if this is for a Conscript map. You could use an env_shooter, but those would be physically simulated and disappear after time. Other than that, I don't know. You could try bugging your programmer to make a Movewith/Parenting feature.

I wouldn't doubt the programmers if they say it's heavily modified quake, especially if it resembles goldsource. Even if it is a hacked version of GS, it still is technically just a heavily modified quake engine.
The spotlight looks a lot better now, too.

I've downloaded Stencyl to give it a try. It's going to take a little getting used to, especially the behavior code snapping interface, (Which doesn't seem to like me at all, parts won't snap together with the events, argh!) but I'll keep trying to figure it's quirks out. Failing that, I'll probably give unity a try.

Hopefully the secret to making text boxes like in the RPG example game will fall into place soon, Those would need be an integral part of the game if I end up making it, since the humor would be mainly via dialog, and the humor I have in mind is why I want to make it.

AFAIK, you need to be running the SDK to use the compile tools, but you don't need to run them via Hammer. (That's the way it works with model compiles, anyway, I'd assume the map compile tools have the same DRM built-in.)
If it won't compile via a batch file with the SDK runnning, then I dunno. I'm not at my computer right now, so I can't test it.

This would be a side-scroller.
Rimrook's using Stencyl, which is what I looked at first. However, it's a bit (read: lot) outside my price range at the subscription cost for the pro version, and I'm not entirely sure if you can upgrade to the pro version from the free version, or how the licensing works for the free version, either. The site's not entirely clear on those points.

I've very recently started thinking about potentially building a platformer. However, I don't have an engine to work with. I do have a project using Actionscript I coded last fall, but it's an early version, and I think it's far too buggy to use, especially because I've forgotten basically all I know about actionscript besides that it's a pain in the ass to work with, and likely won't be able to fix it (again) without some serious work re-learning it.
So, rather than relearn a language I'd only ever use once, I'm looking for something that might streamline the process and make it fun enough to make that I might consider doing it again.

Now, I've looked at Stencyl, and it seems like it would be a fairly good choice. However, in order to distribute your work in it as a standalone game, you have to pay for a yearly subscription to the "Pro" version. It also looks like you need to be always connected to the internet to use it. So, does anyone know otherwise? If Stencyl has the ability to work offline, and you can move projects between the "Pro" version and the free version, (or vice versa) I'll likely use it.

Otherwise, does anyone know of any other alternatives to Stencyl that they could recommend?

I use McAfee, which has yet to show up in this thread.
That's because it's so bad it's not even worth mentioning. I used it a few years ago, and it was basically a virus itself. Never picked up a Trojan we did have (My brother had to manually sweep the computer using safe mode and a DOS prompt to find it's location and squash the damn thing.) and it took up a crapton of system resources. Paying for McAfee is basically buying a virus, excepting the handy shredder tool.

I have also been playing some Minecraft lately, built a floating city, and I just grabbed the latest prerelease.

Now, I've been tossing the idea around in my head of doing a Minecraft journal on hardcore, similar to what Urby used to be doing before he started doing videos.
So, two questions;
1) Would that be boring, or would some of you actually be interested in reading something like that? (With pictures, of course.)

2) I have an old world based on a medium sized island that I haven't played in a while. Should I reuse the seed for that, or do a random one?

Basically, Sociopaths don't feel enough, Psychopaths feel too much.
Or at least that's my understanding. Don't feel too bad about now knowing the difference, the media doesn't do a very good job at differentiating either.

Sociopath. A sociopath is generally able to appear normal, but do not feel emotions such as remorse or empathy. A psychopath has trouble keeping emotions such as anger in check, and can be very easy to set off in a dangerous manner.

Again, probably shouldn't know that.

A psychologist might be able to detect it, but not if the subject is actively hiding it. However, something such as schizophrenia would be much easier to detect, I think.

So I'm thinking that America should impose mandatory background checks, psyche evaluations, and training for buying weapons. This would ensure criminals and the insane would have less chance of legally obtaining weapons, and also that if someone absolutely feels they need to kill someone specific, they're less likely to hit people in the crossfire.

At the very least, if we can't get rid of shootings, we can try and lower collateral.

I'd love to have both a P-90 and an M4, but not real ones. Externally exact replicas for modeling purposes. Both 3D and photographic.
Oh, and to use as movie props too. But I'd need a decent camera first.

Really, that should be all you need to protect yourself. They don't need to fire bullets, just make whoever is threatening you think they do.

I'd like to point out that the P-90 is an SMG. It fires 5.7 rounds, which is pistol ammo. I probably shouldn't know that.
Solution to the gun problem? More guns!
I actually saw a statement on the news from the president of Gun Owners of America (I think) that said about the same thing, but in seriousness. He said gun control would make the situation worse by having 'more unarmed targets for psychopaths'.

Tell me, did anyone shoot back during Columbine? Virginia Tech? No. Because normal people aren't armed during an average day.

It's horrible how stuff like this can happen, though I wasn't aware it was the very worst in US history.
There have been a lot of shootings in Toronto recently as well, though they're likely gang related, being Toronto.

If it was schizophrenia, hopefully things will improve in relation to awareness and treatment, so it won't happen again with someone else.

I've made a set of 3 beakers/test tube type pieces in 2 variations so far. (One concave, one convex) They don't have an additive texturemode, because that looks crap with something like that, but you might be able to use rendermodes to make them translucent.
I also tried to make a tape from one of the old fifties reel-to-reel machines, but that doesn't seem to compile properly for some reason.

Do you have any other specific items you'd like me to take a whack at?
Also, I assume you'll be wanting source files as well, yes?

CapT: The blade itself seems a bit too pristine, and a bit wide at the sharp end. Maybe a bit of rust and a few notches? The hilt is awesome, though. Maybe a couple of scratches or something on the texture to make it look a bit more weathered.

Also, I don't suppose you have a schematic and parts list for the real one you made, do you? I don't know when I'd get the time or money to build one, but I'd love to have one of those babies.

Well for starters, I don't think there's really a need for an M16, seeing as the mod already has an M4, which is essentially the same thing but a bit smaller. Burst fire isn't really something that would fit in HL-style gameplay anyway, as it's mostly used for accuracy, and since HL is run & gun, the accuracy cone doesn't change when you hold down the fire button.

A minigun would be pretty cool, it could work as a drop from the HWGrunt.

Flamethrower would be cool as well, but I don't know where you could get it. If you think you can do a particle flame for it, as well as ignite enemies, go for it, otherwise don't spend the time on it. IMO, it wouldn't be worth the effort if it's just a fireball gluon gun like the one in They Hunger.

As for the self-heal medkit, unless you want to make all the medkits behave like that, and have a carry capacity of about 5 I wouldn't bother. It would only make inconsistencies.

Yeah, I think the Blue shift armor was just a silent HEV with a vest and helmet entities that added different amounts of armor, and all the HEV chargers didn't work for you. You could probably also add different types of vest and helmet, like picking up HECU gear occasionally or something, to flesh it out.

I don't have all that much I have to do this summer, so if you want to go that route, send me the viewmodels and I'll see what I can do.

That's a good list of settings. I would recommend the Black Mesa part be kept to a single chapter, since we've all spent so much time there. Perhaps have the player start on a tram going through damaged sections of the facility to the surface?
What is the player's exact occupation going to be? How do they get the HEV suit? Since you're doing code would you prefer an armor system like BS had? If you could get me a set of LD Barney hands, I could try and do model hacks, swap out the sleeve texture, etc. (Unless you'd be fine with Ambient.Impact's HD hands on the LD weapons. I doubt most people would notice)
