If the amount of content counts for anything (which for me it always does), then it's possible.
That makes so little sense it makes my head spin.

Topic post editing = yes, but they'll go through a forum mod first before the changes are made live (this is in line with how tutorial proposals and submissions now work).

Editing the last post will also cause the thread to automatically bump itself (the current problem with editing the last post is that the rest of the community isn't alerted to the fact that it's been edited, unlike when you post something new).

No, you want Shader Model 2 at the very least. Grab an nVidia card, they're all Shader Model 3: they moved to SM3 ages ago.

There's a patch floating around for Duke Nukem 3D that allows it to work on XP. I also believe there's a high-res texture and model pack floating around that'll turn the enemies from sprites to actual models.

Well worth some Google research.

Dang you Madcow. :P

TWHL3 is being worked on by the way (and we're getting a fair bit done): we've just stopped showing people.

As for the results, apparently the judges had some problems with some of the maps. I can definately say however, that they have tested some of the entries.

Dude, seriously. Get Half-Life. Without it, you're not going to have:
  • Models
  • Textures
  • Sprites
  • Something to test your maps with
It's dirt cheap now too: if you can afford to have a computer and use the Internet, then you can afford Half-Life.

Afaik, none of the compile tools have network capabilities. Not sure on the current functionality of Zoner's tools however.

I know with Source it's possible to do multi-machine compiles (rather than give each machine a compile process, multiple machines work on an individual process before moving onto the next), but the tool needed to do this is only avaliable from Valve and you have to pay a fee for it (I imagine it's all to do with licensing Source out).

A laptop that can run Source decently will always cost more than a desktop PC with similar specs. If you need the mobility and price isn't an issue, then yeah, go for a laptop. I have a MacBook Pro myself, and that runs Source fairly decently. I wouldn't recommend a laptop as a sole gaming rig, as you can't really upgrade them: you'd get more gaming life out of a desktop PC than a laptop.

in Orange Box Mapping has arrived Post #238610
I think the damage done to the railway was as a result of the portal storms that occur after the Citadel's demise. Obviously when you see the first portal storm in the game, it has a pretty profound effect on the already damaged bridge.

My guess: the Citadel collapses during the escape. The train continues onward for a decent distance (and not going directly straight, obviously), before being hit by one of the portal storms, causing the bridge to partially collapse, sending the train plunging into the ravine.

I think the answer to that bridge thing is "who cares". Not everything has to make rational sense, and it wasn't so jarring that people actually actively noticed it (bar a few).

It's more of a bastardised version of calculations if you know what I mean...if the physics was properly calculating how that bridge would collapse using its physics engine solely, the game wouldn't exactly run too swell at that point.

in Source Mapping Post #238541
Nope, you definately can't use those features.

At this current point in time, Valve's suite of Source powered stuff is completely seperate. HL2, CS:S, DoD:S and Episode One all run off one version of the Source engine (which might be split into various builds, depending on the game). The HL2 engine was updated when Episode One came along, but none of the maps were recompiled to take advantage of the changes. The upgrade that Episode One brought wasn't that large: it was more of a modular upgrade than anything else.

The Orange Box brings with it a new version of the Source engine, one that's totally seperate to the previous version. Basically, Valve will need to unify the games under the new engine, which, I imagine, will be total hell: they're not exactly reknowned for their file efficiency at the moment. Maps will need to be completely recompiled to work under the new engine, meaning that everyone will need to download a crap-tonne of content to replace the old one. As well as this, there's going to be problems for players who can't get the Orange Box engine working properly either.

It would be nice if they did it slowly, but tbh, I have no idea where they'd start. :P

in Merging brushs increase r_speeds? Post #238449
Making it touch the floor will cause the engine to split the face that the cylinder is on, causing the render time to increase. Make the cylinder a func_wall and it won't have an effect on it at all.

in Merging brushs increase r_speeds? Post #238434
Yes, that's a very good way of doing them. The brushes behind them should be constructed as simply as possible: giant cubes work best.

If you're just gonna clip excess junk, you're going to have seam problems, and all your brushwork is going to be off the grid.

It's really not good practice to do it at all. You can achieve the same result without intersecting brushes: its more efficient.

in Merging brushs increase r_speeds? Post #238423
Oh no no no! That will make r_speeds worse.

The HL engine won't cull brushes even if they're mashed up inside each other. At the point where the brushes intersect, the engine will start cutting up the faces horribly to try and render it correctly.

Never, ever EVER intersect brushes in anyway!

What do you mean by 'merging'? If you mean 'grouping' then no, it won't change the r_speeds at all. Grouping is a Hammer specific thing: it has absolutely nothing to do with the compiled BSP.
