runs like butter
Is that a good thing? :P
Once again, I shall give it a kick and report back my findings.

EDIT: Ooh, yeah, that made it a lot better. Looks like you've addressed just about everything (as you've stated). Only found one bug this time round. It seems that pressing fire and then a direction nigh-simultaneously, you can end up shooting parallel to your line of travel. Obsoive (Note that there's no turns in the trail):

Other than that, fighters seemed a tad... hesitant to bother coming after you, but that sporadic-ness actually felt like a nice touch either way.

Only thing that bothered me was that fire-stopping-when-you-turn thing, but you've acknowledged that.

All-in-all, a lovely improvement!
I'm curious as to what kinds of levels you could create with this. Presumably it isn't limited to this kind of somewhat aimless fly-around-shooting-at-platforms. I know this is "heavily influenced" by another game, but I was just wondering, since you asked about people designing levels, what kind of freedom would be possible in that.

You can't get much from that nullified mess, but this is my way of showing that the recreation I'm working on has its base structure in place. (Picture has the front walls hidden, o'course.) Next up: basic texturing, followed by hammering in some detail.

That said, 'tis intriguing. Ever'one likes score. That first screenie is nice and interesting though. If it as what it looks like, I might suggest a little more contrast between background and... the stuff.

Does Sledge have any way of controlling the speed of the camera for when you're moving it around? If not, could I request one? It's just sometimes when you're doing small, precise things, it can be a right royal pain to get a camera is exactly the right spot. IMO.

I suspect an official compo may be the only way to re-spark anyone's interest even in mini-stuff. More people seem to put in the effort to get an entry in rather than dropping out with official stuff.

And from a site standpoint, it'd help tide us, the restless community, over in the time until TWHL4 :P

I recall talk of an RPG-type thing quite a ways back. Nothing ever came of it, I don't think.

I can only imagine even if you could get such a map into the game, for any real amount of detail, you'd need significant amounts of VIS-blocking for it to run reasonably. That said, I don't Source, so I wouldn't know :glad:

EDIT: May have been this, but I seem to recall talk more along the lines of this thread, so I might be thinking of something else.

I see TWHL4 as needing a subscription of, ooh, $25 a month, and and a premium service of about $40 a month which gives access to features like more screenshots.

By the way, I've always wondered, what exactly are the odds of getting a page leet-ified?

Pengy suggested it (fourth post), not Stjojkejoek.
The number of HL1 deathmatch levels is pretty limited, how about "any map from any game released before 2000"?
Just so's proper attribution.

I think your suggestion there, CT, is breaching the realm of being too broad. IMO.

EDIT: Upon re-reading your post — or just plain reading it, apparently — I see I've misunderstood. I'd go #3. Plenty of scope, yet well-defined boundaries.
#1 is vastly too broad. #2 requires old work worth remaking, which not everyone might have. No point needlessly locking people out of a competition. #4 seems like #3 with an arbitrary, potentially detrimental restriction. #5 is the only other one of note, IMO. Relevant, enough scope to pick and choose within, without being too open.

I just don't know how the hell anyone hears about such things. I don't know — and will continue not to know — anything outside of this thread. Then again, I'm remarkably uninformed on most things.

Anyway, I'm sure if it's a genuinely bad system, Valve'll tweak it until it works. It's what they tend to do.

Step 1: Make a cube.
Step 2: Submit cube to the Vault.
Step 3: Wait for Then and Now.
Step 4: Pimp the shit out of that cube.

Seriously though, I really want the pre-2000 compo, like, ASAP. It would give me a legitimate excuse to finish one of those remakes I started. (Any advantage from already starting? Not much I start makes it past the first (untextured) room. I have many "maps" that can attest to this.)

@Penguinboy: Really quite serious issue.

I don't know whether this is a known issue or not, but it's really shitting me off, quite frankly. I wasn't sure exactly what was going on the first couple times, but now that it seems to have basically deleted a good half of my TWHL Tower map, I figured I should probably investigate. As far as I can tell, this is a problem and I'm not just doing something stupid, but feel free to prove me wrong.

Brushes that are tied to an entity, if hidden, do not seem to be saved.

Here's my fun demonstration that you can try at home!
I created three blocks. The one on the left was left alone (the control), the middle one was added to a visgroup called "visible" and the one on the right to a visgroup called "invisible". I then shift-cloned all three down (shift-cloning maintains the visgroup properties) and then tied each new block to an entity.
User posted image
I then unticked the "invisible" visgroup, hiding those blocks. Then I saved, and exited Sledge. Upon reopening, and showing the "invisible" visgroup again...
User posted image
As you can see, the hidden entity brush is now gone. The entity still exists but is empty, hence the "func_detail" floating at origin. Alt+P verifies this.
Other small tests I've just done show that this does not happen to point entities, using the "hide selected/unselected" buttons has similar effects, and if multiple brushes are part of an entity and not all are hidden, the visible brushes will not be affected.

Urby, please either check my rmf or send it back to me. I need to find out whether it is nigh irreparable, and if it is, whether I could be bothered remaking half of my floor in the day that is left.

EDIT: Okay, looks like none of the overly complicated brushes are gone (luckily), so rebuilding it shouldn't be too much trouble. I'll repair it, send it to you again, then I'll see about doing those improvements I kept talking about.

Just letting my mouth talk here* †, bear with me... If an ideal time for everyone is out of the question, what if the tourney was perhaps a bit shorter and run twice on a particular day at different times? People could then attend whichever is more convenient, or both if they choose. To make it fair on people who can only attend one, maybe only the tickets from one of the events would count for people who attend both; whichever one they earned more in.
A split tourney would mean less people in any one event, though.

* Metaphorically, of course.
† Like usual.

EDIT: As for the previous question, I suppose the most convenient times for myself would be about 04-14 GMT. Consider that broadly niche though, even for Aussietralia.

@Dr. 'Range: Are you certain that what you originally had coloring the texture was the 255th color? Like, absolutely certain? Because as we've established, either it wasn't, or you didn't have a {, or you didn't set up the entity right. Them's all that could stop it short of some unknown variable none of us are aware of, and if that's the case, unless you can replicate the problem, there's not much to work off of.
It'd be a lot easier if you'd just try again, knowing what you know now.

I really wish you wouldn't start posts that are entirely wrong with the word "actually".

Made quick test texture, and a quick test map to showcase. Texture used Wally's red palette, so no blue colours in there. It's simply the 255th colour is the transparent one, it doesn't matter what it is.

What's the ruling on what constitutes a remake? Do you have to remain faithful to the theme, the layout, the key elements or some combination thereof?

I'm just wondering how free we are there, because what I have in mind may work well abstractified a bit.

I've got at least three four recreations from various games at various levels of completion lying around that I can think of. While they're mostly carbon copying and wouldn't do for this, I think one of them might serve well for remixing...

And after a quick investigation of what games Urby might have been referring to, I kinda hope he and I aren't thinking of the same level, because I'm pretty sure we're speaking of the same game.
