in The all-holy walking animation.. Post #236139
I could be wrong here, but for a walking animation, you're not meant to physically animate the figure moving forward. Rather, you animate the character as if it were walking on a treadmill. The engine handles how the figure moves forward in a walk.

Haha, there are a ton of places like that in Opposing Force, and even some in Half-Life 2 if I remember correctly. Rooms with only small doors and a ceiling just barely high enough to fit a container. Makes no sense.
That's cos Valve suck LOL
But yeah, I do think showing a plausible reason or entryway, even if its unaccesible to the player adds to the map.

Somehow I don't think a real warehouse would stack crates like that...

When I map, I like to establish as much background in a map's setting as I can. For example, on your screenshot, the crates are stacked to the very top of the ceiling: how did they get there? Does the roof retract and does a crane drop them in? Adding small touches like that will make a scene make more sense (even in a surreal scene) and will give a better sense of realism.

If I have a roadway, or an enclosed area, I always make something that shows how someone could've reached that enclosed area. CS:S maps do that a lot: they're essentially boxed in, but there's also a hint of a larger world outside.

Yes, as many of you might have guessed from the news post earlier this week, TWHL's famous competitions have returned! While we did say that we'd wait till TWHL3 before announcing another competition, we decided that we'd go ahead with this one anyway.

Given that the last competition generated some whinging from certain untalented jackasses, this competition has been designed to be dead simple. Do what you want, so long as it adheres to the layout (thanks to Rimrook).

But alas! What is the surprise? Well, for the first time ever in TWHL history, we actually have prizes for all those who place in this compo (that is, 1st, 2nd and 3rd)! Yes, real, tangible, PHYSICAL prizes! Each winner will receive the same prize (considering this is our first time), so get cracking.

The prizes are:
  • An exclusive, limited edition "YOU'RE WINNER" glossy sticker
  • A personalised congratulatory letter, 'signed' by the current TWHL mods
  • A REAL envelope with a REAL Australian postage stamp or two
(Keep in mind you'll need to give one of us your postal address if you win so we can send it out)

So, have fun and get cracking: you have a little over a month to produce something worthy of a YOU'RE WINNER sticker!

This competition brought to you by the TWHL mods that still exist around here: Penguinboy, Strideh and myself.

in TF2 or FF? Post #234159
Valve has used the new art style to promote better gameplay. They've chosen a very cinematic approach to the character design (the silouhette theory) which allows you to clearly identify all the different classes even with the fast paced gameplay. This is something that's missing in TFC and FF.

TF2 seems to push forward the concept of the team, moreso than TFC ever did. And the art style is rippin'.

Tbh, FF looks like crap. None of the media they released prompted me to sit up and take notice of the game. As soon as the new style for TF2 was revealed, I had already made my choice. There's something to be said for pushing a new style forward, rather than just rehashing old gameplay mechanics.
