Dude, you're judging that on a 15 minute demo?

The gameplay is repetitive. It's the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. LOOK AN ENEMY!! SLOW MO!! HE IS DEAD!! OMG THERE ARE LIKE ONLY 2 TYPES OF ENEMY IN THIS GAME, HOW GOOD IS THAT!!!?!?!

The level design is repetitive, blocky and boring. There are times where you get a sense of deja vu - you think you've been in the area, but you haven't. It just looks exactly the same as 10,000 other areas in the game.

The game is (really) poorly optimised. Most of it is set in very small, close-quarter areas, and yet it lags. I've had no lag issues with any other game, including HL2, Far Cry and BF2 (all being run at max settings), yet FEAR manages to lag the crap out of my pretty decent rig.

The game is not scary. It tries hard, but it's just not scary. After a while you come to expect what's going to happen next, and the game loses whatever atmosphere it had. Also, the game tries to be atmospheric and scary, but all it is is dark. Doom 3 anyone?

The shadows are horrible. They are so freaking sharp, it really takes away from the immersion (you might say 'pfft, they're only shadows,' but believe me). Even with soft shadows on (which gives you a HUGE performance hit), the shadows look worse than HL2s. They're just really shit.

Luckily, the AI is pretty good. They'll work together to try and hunt you down, they'll dive and jump and pull props to take cover behind. It really helps with the immersion, but even the good AI can't save the game.

Having said that, if you liked the demo, you'll probably like the game. The demo had 15 minutes of gameplay, the game has 7 hours (lol) of the exact same gameplay (sooo repetitive).

Don't let this discourage you though. The game isn't THAT bad. It just isn't good. It's.... just ok.

FEAR... is alright. It sorta looks nice, the AI is good, the level design is poor, it's not very well optimised, and it's kind of repetitve. It's fun, but not scary at all.

And the shadows are massive nub.

And yes, I've heard it is short (I've not completed the whole game yet). People are saying 7 hours on the FIRST RUN. That's pretty hopeless, IMO.

About the smallness of the layout: Well, it was small. Probably too small. However, considering that I had to add 2 weeks onto an already 2 month long competition means that a layout any bigger would've taken much longer.

I recently bought myself a few new parts. You should be looking for new parts, and just upgrading instead of a new PC. You should get something above 3Ghz, (at least) 1GB of memory, a nice new motherboard and a fairly recent/good video card (try the 6600GT or x800 for a budget card that'll run decently with HL2 max settings). I bought something similar for 900 bucks. Fairly cheap.

No, you see, all action games suck arse, just like all action films suck arse. Comparing Doom to Half-Life (the first of each series) is really stupid. As for Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, you can't throw around extremly good graphics without a good game tied behind it, which is why HL2 pwns it.

Hm, I'm not sure that I'll be able to judge at any consistent times or periods. Surely there's no desperate requirement to multiplayer playtest it ? seeing as all the layouts are the same?

Layouts are the same.... yes. But multiplayer testing would mean we could see how well the Z axis was used, how well the RPG trap works, etc. You don't have to play in the multiplayer testing, but we're gonna do it anyway.
