The player has no clear indication of what they're meant to do
I don't think that's true. I think what to do becomes very obvious after you get through map 1, if you pay close attention.

Fair point.

The player should not be able to continue ANYWHERE past the point of getting the crowbar/suit until they get it. That's just the way it is.
You do have a point. But it is a matter of opinion too. And my opinion here, is obviously different to yours. :)
Also, players DO need to be herded like sheep or they get frustrated and bored. That's just the way it is.
This mod is not for people who fall into this category.
If you fall into this category of people, you probably won't enjoy Citizen too much.

There is a gateway for the crowbar*. There is a gateway for the suit. You can't get far past them (without cheating) without getting the items.

How did you get to map 3???

*(There are some additional crowbars before the gateway too)

Trapt
You cannot assume that a player will know exactly what to do,
You're right - but we can hope that players might like to think for themselves, rather than be herded like sheep.
After 3 levels of monotonous, uninteresting gameplay, I finally get to fight some enemies! But I don't have a crowbar, gun or suit, since you allowed players to continue without these essential items. I had to cheat and use give item_suit and weapon_crowbar to continue.
You can't get to map 3 legitimately without the crowbar and the suit.

Penguinboy's post:
HORRIBLE.
IMPOSSIBLE.
GATEWAY?
I DIDN'T HAVE.
IMPOSSIBLE TO GET
DO NOT PRESS
LONG WINDED AND BORING.
BOUNCE RIGHT OFF
Nothing Penguinboy said was anything other than personal opinion (which is fine) or plain old mistakes in observation.

I'm sorry it didn't suit you, Penguin, old bean, but there are a lot of people out there enjoying it a lot more than you seem to have. We can't please everyone.

Sorry you didn't find it fun Trapt. We knew that it wouldn't suit some people.

One thing though:
5 button combination puzzles are stupid
You did notice the combinations written on the walls next to the doors. Right? :D
maybe if they are so arrogant not to accept people's opinions
You didn't offer any opinions. You stated in capital letters that things were impossible, which are not impossible at all.

How is that constructive criticism, or even an informed opinion?

I don't think your criticism was constructive.

You typed "THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE" for two things which are most definately possible.

This makes you look like a moron.

Looking forward to your next work. Really am.

you are told to avoid the combine in the next building. this is IMPOSSIBLE.
Excuse me while I point and laugh at you.

It's so easy.

You can just walk past the cop. without him even seeing you. VERY easily.

What did you find impossible about that.
do you know a mechanic called a GATEWAY? it's something that stops the player from missing that fucking crowbar on the road
There are 3 crowbars. You're guaranteed to find at least one of them. This tells me, that you never play any roleplaying games. And if you do, you really, really suck at them.
i stumbled around for a while until someone on IRC told me that i needed the crowbar which WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET.
Again, totally false.

I don't need to continue.

All your complaints are laughable.

If you can't work out how to WALK PAST something, what kind of gamer are you???

I think I know. The kind we didn't make this mod for.

That's one way to do part of it ;) :D We were wondering how long it would be before someone tried that. :D Pssst. Throwing stuff on him works too. But obviously, only stuff that's going to hurt. Don't try throwing that boot that's lying around though. That'll just piss him off :D
it's kinda hard to avoid him.
It isn't. It really isn't. Think about it. Remember. I know exactly what you have to do to alert him. At what exact moment did the guard attack you? Was it when you first saw him? No, it almost certainly wasn't. So what did you do after you saw him? Run right up to him and shake his hand?

It took me awhile to for me to decide, because I liked blockh a lot.

But I feel I have to vote for dm_bulk by Fergo.

It seems more of an achievement for GoldSource, than blockh is for Source.

Well, yes and no. You could find one legitimately by then.....there are various paths through that level ;)

So you're that noob who gets random headshots.
That's me!

Seriously though, I find anything below 9.0 to be pretty unresponsive. I don't actually move my hand much while playing. I like to be able to turn 180 degrees by moving my hand about an inch. When my mouse is dirty it's really annoying, because my movements are usually so small.
CRT shouldn't have anything to do with it.
Well no, it shouldn't, but it could possibly.

I'm not excusing myself. Look at the screenshots. If it's darker than that for you, turn the brightness up, both in-game and on your monitor if necessary. If it won't go high enough, your monitor is probably the reason.

Sorry. :P There are a lot of other accents too. Later on.
It's unclear as to what your supposed to do right off the get go.
That's kinda the point.
I have no idea where I'm going.
There is a roleplay element to this mod. I'm sorry if that's not to your taste.

in Orange Box Mapping has arrived Post #238124
Ghetto, the fix is "-engine ep1"

not "-game ep1"

To map for the original Source games (before Orange box) you currently need to use this fix. Unfortunately it breaks the model viewer in Hammer too -- lets hope Valve fixes this soon.

When you load the SDK and change the whole configuration to EP2 mode (and the above fix is NOT applied) everything seems to work fine.

Except that all the paths have changed, so you'll have missing textures and models etc in your old maps. Which is slightly irritating.

in Mapping for Nexiuz Post #238120
As far as I know, Hammer doesn't store any texture information in .map files, so I don't know how the Quake3 textures would work.

If you own HL2 then the SDK for it should be downloadable and usable from your Steam Tools menu.

You need to use that to map for Source.

After a while this disappears and then all that is on the screen is the mouse pointer.
At this point, does pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc bring up the task manager?

If yes, try clicking the New Task button and typing in 'explorer'

If no, does it boot into safe mode, like Ant said?

I had a look at the map, and I can't really work out why you want to do this.

What's the point in making an npc walk in an endless straight line?

If you wanted to make the npc follow something else which is moving independently, I could understand that. But by parenting the walk-target to the npc, the end result is only ever going to be the citizen walking into a wall forever and ever.

If you tell me more about the situation that you want this to actually work in, I can probably help you achieve what you want. But your intentions don't make sense to me right now.

Dynamic lighting is one of the most (if not the most) performance degrading thing you can use in the Source engine.

Source is not good at dynamic lighting.

At all.

If you use them, you've got to use them VERY well. Otherwise, people with lesser machines are going to grind.

I'm pretty sure you can't parent scripted sequences.

I may be wrong, but I've done a lot of work with them recently, and I don't think you'll ever get that to work exactly the way you're thinking about it now.

Sorry.
