Maybe the origin of the model isn't at ground level or something.

By the way, nice alternate spelling of Half-Life you've got there... "1/2 Life". :P

I played the demo. It's really neat, but the movement could use some work still. It's kind of pissing me off that I can't walk backwards and shoot behind me, but I don't know if that's fixable.

It'd also be neat, but not necessary, if you added some things like wall jumping and double jumping, which are pretty common features for side-scrollers.

My 6 year old laptop with a 16MB integrated graphics card runs Half-Life at 30 FPS. I'd say this is a serious problem if your modern desktop performs the same. :P

I can only hope that you didn't do something stupid like upgrade your RAM and CPU as high as possible in a really old computer, leaving the rest of the system unchecked.

Well, I think he's just saying we should have more tutorials like the one he linked to or something... even though we actually do have a tutorial on that subject already. :

And about making zips, all you've got to do in Windows XP is right click in a folder/on your desktop, go to "New" and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". Open it and copy stuff into it like you would any other folder, and that's it.

I lol'd at the idea of wet, cold, hot, dropped, or poorly designed hardware causing software malfunctions. Either learn to diagnose and fix these insignificant problems, or just reinstall Windows.

I think it should be mentioned that this isn't actually 2D at all, it's just a side-scroller. But it's still completely awesome, and I'll try the demo in a bit.

Textures and sounds are both very easy to make on your own, and some people can even model too. Other than that, you can totally customize everything just by replacing various GUI graphics and such, no coding required.

Just don't use WinRAR. I don't like it either, so I use 7-Zip. You do know WinRAR isn't the only program that supports RARs, right?

In my mind, using it is a step forward. The Zip format is old. Really old. RARs are the new way, and everyone's using them now. Why hold back advancement in technology for frivolous reasons? You're just impairing yourself by refusing to adapt to the new compression standard.

in Looking to upgrade video card. Post #234759
Original Equipment Manufacturer. You'll see parts branded as OEM on places like Newegg, along with their regular and higher priced "retail" versions. These parts aren't available in stores, because they contain minimal packaging and usually no instructions of any kind. It's usually just a cardboard box with some bubble wrap.

Because of this, they're priced lower (usually by about 10-20 dollars), but I've read before that they also don't perform as well. For something like CPUs, where they aren't all created equal, this makes a difference.

Dave, when I said...
By the way, ever heard of the rumor that OEM parts are lower quality and lower performing than their retail counterparts? There's a significant price difference between the two, and most people end up going for the OEM version because of this...
...I was referring to something entirely different. I was talking about the difference between OEM and retail branded parts, not whole computers. I don't even know WTF an OEM computer would be.

in Diff sounds in textures, how? Post #234753
yes, you'll have to use GCFScape to open half-life.gcf and find it in there.

And about the sounds, it's not possible to add more without coding, but you can easily replace or modify the sounds in the same way you would replace any model.

in Looking to upgrade video card. Post #234710
I know they use the exact same parts Dave, but due to their strict quality control, they may spend more time comparing setups to see which ones work best. Not that anybody else couldn't do this as well, it's just less likely any one person would have the resources to test so many configurations.

For example, pairing up different RAM DIMMs with a motherboard may yield different results, but the average person isn't going to go and buy 20 brands to compare them.

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm a huge proponent of homebuilt computers, I'm just saying that those expensive gaming machines do have their place, and they aren't all bad. They're just out of reach for most.

Well, in reality Luke, those gaming desktops probably have more refined hardware, since they spend so much time matching all the components up to see if they work together well. However, I don't think there's a high likelihood of this having a large effect on your performance, it's just that some things might work better together.

By the way, ever heard of the rumor that OEM parts are lower quality and lower performing than their retail counterparts? There's a significant price difference between the two, and most people end up going for the OEM version because of this...

Well actually, when they first went hiring people into Valve, most of them had never even been to college, and certainly never had any background in the industry. They were just Quake modders. However, this was a highly unusual situation, because they were a poor unheard of company at the time. Also, it was more common-place to do stuff like this back then, because game development wasn't considered quite as valid of a career path as it is now, and there weren't schools dedicated to getting people into the industry.

Please someone could give me skins(or a complete model) for Martha model (Gordon wife in my mod).. it's the holo model from valve .pak .. obviously original orange suit doesn't fit for my purpose, real life women dress should work.
Thnnk
It's the same model, it's just that the render settings are changed so she's transparent. Also, her name is Gina Cross (not Gina Freeman), and she's been used in a retail game before, so I don't know how that would work out.

Edit: Wow, double-post. :

Yeah, building a computer is really easy. You just screw stuff down, snap things in, and use common sense.

By the way, I'd really recommend keeping the monitor you have now unless you've been wanting to upgrade it for a while and it's a total hunk of trash.

Despite what task manager might say, compiles pretty much never freeze. Have patience, it's probably just taking a long time.

And to upload files, you just go to the Map Vault, click the "Submit a Map" button, and you can select the file to upload the zipped map, along with the screenshot and a description. If the map is bigger than 2MB though, you'll have to host it externally.

... Everything still looks quite chunky, and I see some grotesquely stretched tree textures. In fact, I'd try to subdue your usage of trees just a bit, and sprinkle some rocks in there too. You're not going to fool anybody no matter what you do, but it could at least the woods could have more depth.

I don't know, I think I kind of like this style. It's deceptively cheesy.

P.S. I know those 2D trees are a bitch to work with, I've done a lot of stuff with them. You just have to make sure every one is aligned to the face instead of the world, and then manually adjust the position of them all. It's time consuming, but it sure pays off.
