Face Properties - Hide mask button: Makes it much easier to align textures--especially dark ones. Saves the eyes much misery!

Elon: You're right. I don't know what I was thinking!

Muzzie: I just tried your method and it works amzaingly well! Excellent!
but the texture it self will be shiny
That can actually be useful in some situations.

I made a pool cue pro[, and noticed you could barely see the white plastic tip--at the small end. So I made the white part a textlight with a brigtness value of 1, and it improved the appearance/contrast nicely.

Also nice If you want to make a texture appear to "glow" like a glowstick, tritium watch hands, etc.

Excellent Idea Kasperg!

Muzzie: That trick pwns!

One thing that really annoys me that I see all the time, is people not using Lip value on their sliding doors, so when they're open, you see the awful brush intersection.

My other tip off the top of my head would be to familiarize yourself with all the optioins for texturing under Face Properties. There are some powerful options in there to make any texturing job relatively easy. Two things I do all the time:

1. When texturing a many sided object, I get one side perfect, go down to the box where it says "lift and select" and change it to "apply all texture and values". In general, you can retexture many things quickly, with this method.

2. If your textuing something with the "treat as one" box checked, but it's not working, try hitting the "face" or "world" box, making them all the same.

That's the best I was able to do using this tutorial--which is fine for low res sprays like the ones I use.

I'll try DecalConverter next as inventrex suggested, and see how they compare.

Edit: After DecalConverter:

User posted image

Much nicer! DecalConverter FTW!

How to:

1. Downloadinstall DecalConverter.
2. Open "Roland" in DC and resize to 64?128.
3. Click on Decal menu and click "decal".
4. DC creates pldecal.wad's--so if your using steam, change the name to tempdecal.wad.

Also if you start out with a 24-bit bmp--instead of the jpg I used--, it will look better still.

Well at least it's compiling now... Do you have any insight on what the problem may have been, so it will be easier to diagnose this in the future?

Maybe just the reinstall did it, but it was more likely something with your paths--It's impossible to set the paths for the compile tools to an improper directory, but if you deleted/renamed the directory/moved them, it could be the cause...

And as far as your new error, I have no idea. I'll tell you though it's giving me flashbacks of Windows98!!
But he will have to use SUBST everytime...
No. If you read Seventh-Monkey's steam tutorial which also covers use of SUBST, you'll see he mentions using a batch file, so you only have to do it once ;)

Soooo much easier and you can actually see the whole path when you look in hammer options...

Sorries! I didn't notice the truncated filename!

Well, here's what my bsp looks like:
Command line: C:PROGRA~1VALVEH~1toolshlbsp.exe "c:program filesvalve hammer editormapsbattlefront_turret"
Notice your's is strangely different. And doesn't show the map name:
** Command: C:PROGRA~1VALVEH~1toolshlbsp.exe
** Parameters: "c:program filessteamsteamappsanime_freak2001@hot
mail"
'Couple things to try:

-Are you using Zoner's tools? "Zoner's" should be in your compile log. Use 3.2.1 not beta if you are.
-You could try unistalling hammer and starting over.
-In Sevneth's steam tutorail, he talks about creating a batch file to shorten your filenames, and makes it less confusing. I would do that too.

Well, this one is wrong.

Why do you have your tools in the steam directory? Try moving them somewhere else--I use the Valve Hammer Editor directory and put them in the 'tools' folder. If for no other reason, the path is simpler.

<rowleybob sighs>

Actually yes, the information you require is here.

<rowleybob moans>

To your upper left under Site Stuff, you will find a link to tons of stuff, aptly called: Links.

If you were to click on that, you'd find--among many other things--The latest CS FGD needed for model support.

You would also find the link for Hammer 3.5, but I think you have that already.

The model support is buggy, but it works quite well.

Cheers.

@inventrex: v.8 is the latest ;)

I personally find myself hitting the backspace key to redo my search for Forums instead of Tutorials.

The tutorials are great, but imo the "forum" search is far more valuble/useful, and what most people will be checking i think--I mean how many people actually read tutorials ahead of time lolol?

So I think it would be better if the default was Forums.

What do you think?

O RLY? Here's one I found out of 4 pages of stuff about prefabs.

That textbox on the upper right of the page, just type in what you're looking for , choose forums and click the Go button.

If your asking these sort of questions, you should also read or browse all the Half-Life tutorials on this page. Those are on your upper left, under the Reference section.

We're not mad at you really, we're just sick of answering the same old questions all the time. I did the same thing when I was a beginner, but now you know!

So no posting questions before searching first k?

In regard to my last comment, I apologize for my lack of clarity. Hopefully this will be more comprehensible:

I thought your screenies looked dark before, but now they look fine to me.

The pallets of cardboard goods stacked on top of each other without shelfs, is very unrealistic looking. You could build a metal shelf for the space inbetween them, or add a metal shelf to the texture itself.

The shelves or "racks" are very common in most any wharehouse space.
