You'd probably get more votes if MOTM was up to date, and you'd keep MOTM up to date if you got more votes! Circular logic wins again. :P

Right click the game in Steam, and choose "properties". Then add "-windowed" (without quotes) into the box that pops up when you click "Launch Options". It won't load in the native, but it wont mess with your desktop either. Once it starts, you can change the settings as you want, and remove the "-windowed" from the options before you start the game again.

That's not a real Valve community, it's just a traffic-gathering website. I don't think it matters much in the scheme of things.

Also, is there any way to combine this with my idea from ages ago? Many people seemed to like the idea, but nothing ever came out of it.

For people without EP2: If it is made as a mod based on the EP2 engine, you don't need EP2 to play it, you only need a Source game, I'm pretty sure.
See if you have "Source SDK Base - Orange Box" in your Steam "Tools" tab.

He meant that Intel are doing better in the CPU race at the moment, but it's all relative. Similar priced AMD and Intel CPUs perform about the same, but Intel CPUs have models that go way over the AMD top CPU. I prefer AMD, myself. I currently have the best AMD CPU that exists at the moment, quad core Phenom 9950. The equivalent Intel in the same price range is like the 8850, and then it goes way up to triple that price on the top Intel models.

1. Custom titles are for content contributors only
2. You just get permission to use the titles, you enable them and specify your own custom title. You can edit it whenever you want.
3. Because I'm lazy etc, custom titles that stretch more than two lines overlap the bottom of the forums page sometimes, so make sure your title is only one line, when displayed in the forums.
4. As strider said, no inappropriate titles. If you use an inappropriate title, or one with more than one line, you will receive a warning, and, if you continue to use it, you will get your title privileges removed, at the least.

If you have a tutorial, post here saying that you want to be a content contributor, and have custom titles.

in Left 4 Dead - tweaks & loading times Post #260372
Loading times are mostly based on RAM (and possibly CPU), but not really on your video card. Since you have a P4, it's likely that you have DDR-400 RAM, which is twice as slow as most modern machines (DDR2-800). And it goes without saying that a P4 is not the best CPU to run L4D on, so loading times will always be fairly long. As for why it's longer, I couldn't say.

Hyperthreading is not multicore, and for all source games you should bump the Paged Pool memory up to 400 or so (last I saw there was a tutorial thread in the Steam forums with 3 options: ~200mb, ~300mb, and ~400mb. I'd take the third option.)

Uhh, we're talking about desktops, right? I've never seen a Desktop HDD with a speed of less than 7200RPM (in the last, say, 5 years?). Putting a 5400RPM drive in a desktop is really stupid, because it'd be a laptop drive -_-

Here's my hard drive setup, I find it works quite well:
200GB: windows and programs, as well as my working directory
200GB: game installs, steam, mapping, etc
700GB: storage
I need more room for storage, but I've never run out of space on my programs or games drives!

also, cap t: buy the best value HDD. here, the cost of 1TB drives is the best value (i.e. cost-per-gigabyte). divide the price by the number of GB and the best value one is the lowest result. (when talking HDD, 1TB = 1000GB, not 1024GB)

Sony failed the console race this year. There is absolutely no way they can reclaim the victories they had with PS/PS2. It's the console rule: nobody can win the race more than twice consecutively.

in Monitor Asleep Post #259712
Hmm, you should be able to turn on the monitor manually even if the computer isn't running, srry. I know mine, and every monitor I've ever come across, shows a box saying "No display adaptor" or something like that. So, if it's a new monitor, it's probably faulty.

Try a different monitor for the computer, and a different computer for the monitor. Use a different video cable if possible. A laptop would do fine. Just to see if the problem is the monitor or the computer. Try not to use a TV unless it uses the same output on the video card. Most cards have an S-Video out port and there's always the slim chance that it works, but the DVI port doesn't. Also, try unplugging and re-plugging the monitor power cable, while the computer is running.

In other words: eliminate the variables.

Windows XP doesn't detect (or use) more than 3.5GB of RAM, so installing more than that is useless unless you plan on running Vista or the 64-bit edition of XP.

So having more than 2x2GB sticks is pointless, because they'll sit there and never be used. So you can safely use the red slots. Problem solved :)

Hello? You can install a PSU, graphics card, DVD drives and HDD's without a case. Just rest them on a bench or something. And you don't need cooling fans (besides the case-independent CPU cooler) if there's no enclosure to blow air out of.

I don't recommend it though, just pointing out that Tito is completely misinformed on this matter. There are many "enthusiasts" out there that have computers laid out all over a desk instead of having a case.
