Plus, if you get a good one, it could last you well into your into your next computer. That's one less purchase down the road.

And yeah, if you get a faulty one it could possibly fry your motherboard and everything else attached to it (RAM, video card, CPU, etc.) :zonked:

Edit: Looks like I found a good 7600 GS for you. It's got 512 MB of memory, and judging from a review I read of it, it should garner 30 FPS average in Oblivion at 1024x768 resolution. Half-Life 2 played fine on a crappy old Radeon 9600 for me, so you should be able to max most of the settings with this.

Srry is a Valve fanboy.
I'm not denying it, but that doesn't mean you're not a fucking idiot. My laptop runs Steam fine, and it has only 384 MB of memory and a 1 GHz processor. Stop whining about it, and accept that you're either completely wrong or extremely uptight about where your memory goes. After all, you were the one who said you didn't have the NVIDIA icon on your taskbar because it "hogs memory"...
...automatic patching is very nice if and only if you have a 5Mbps+ internet connection. Otherwise you have to wait and wait for a game to update, just to play it, even Half-Life 2. Dial-up users are left in the dust.
This coming from the person who normally acts like everybody in the world has a T3 line running into their house, and posts oversized and unoptimized images all over the place.

Furthermore, Valve doesn't regularly go around disabling accounts manually, but you WILL get VAC banned if the game detects that your EXE has been changed or tampered with. Oh noez, here comes Big Brother shutting down all the lame-ass h4xx0rz, whatever will we do?

Which*

Those video cards are the same thing.

The best power supply I can find for the money at those places is this one. It's apparently really good, and it's one of the cheaper 500 watt ones... but damn, prices are high in the UK for those things.

in Video card? uh? Post #227922
I've never heard of this "Colors" before... it sounds like an off-brand, in which case I wouldn't trust it. I wouldn't trust anything that gives you that much power for that price. you only really need 480-500 watts, so look in that range.

Power supplies aren't like hard drives or RAM in that prices have fallen dramatically over the years and they've become a lot more powerful. It's kind of a stagnant technology as far as I know.

By the way, do you have any other online UK store that I could search around on? Amazon.co.uk has a spectacularly underwhelming selection of computer components, it would seem.

It's not pointless, it allows you to get automatic updates and buy a ton of games online. If it wasn't for that, I never would have gotten games like Episode One as quickly when they were released.

Not only that, it organizes all your Valve games (which I have a TON of personally), and allows for easy access to bazillions of servers.

And I still don't see why people say it's invasive. It doesn't install itself in places you don't want it to be, and it hardly takes up any memory. It's entirely contained. You can even disable all the news alerts and popups, if you find them annoying.

Good god, will you stop calling it an "electricity box"? It's a power supply! There is no other name for it!

... and yeah, like Penguinboy said, you can't see shit from those pictures. Not that it matters.

What should you buy? Well, first look for a decent power supply from a well known manufacturer like Rosewill or Silverstone (just examples), and show it to us. I don't know what you have available to you.

That's not always true Penguinboy, but you're probably right in this case.

Just make sure the power supply you get has 20+4 motherboard pins and not 24 pins, because the 20+4 configuration will fit anything, but 24 won't.

@Penguinboy: That's what I'm trying to do, take this one step at a time. ;)

@Ghetto: That information tells me nothing. I need to know what model your motherboard is, but you can't tell that by looking at anything in Windows. Your best bet is to just open your computer up, How hard is it? Take two or three screws off and look at the name on the motherboard. Hell, you don't even need to turn it off first if it's accessible (disregard all safety warnings in manuals, and just don't poke around inside.)

As for what video card you get, I think the 7600 GS sounds good too. I highly recommend you don't invest much money in this computer, because it's pretty dated.

It depends... I assume (although it isn't much of an assumption, more like common sense ;) ) that you didn't build your computer yourself, so... if you could just provide the name of your motherboard (by opening your case) or even what CPU you have, I might be able to help.

I can already see from your pics that it's a Foxconn, I just don't know the model.

Edit: nevermind, I can see that your CPU is a Celeron D from an earlier screenshot. I still need to know what your motherboard is, though.

Yeah. So it's cheaper where you are. Whatever, I was just giving an example, not suggesting you buy it. As I said, I don't even know what's compatible with your motherboard. I'm assuming it's ATX12V, but I could be wrong.

No... no it isn't...

From the description:
...PCI Express native support...
And I take that back, you can get a reliable PSU for about 50 dollars. This is the one I'm using, but I think you may want to find one with a bit more power.

I can't tell you exactly what power supply you need though, because it has to be compatible with your motherboard.

Umm... who cares? It's not an AGP card, and it's certainly not the most powerful PCIe card... :
If it's not enough, PSUs are cheap as fuck these days. I got a 750 watt PSU or something like that for around 20 bucks at CompUSA; more than enough to supply power to a 7900GT and a few SATA drives.
Holy crap, that thing can't be stable. You can't get what would be considered a reliable PSU for under $70(USD) as far as I know... just ask m0p.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007. Does anybody have any idea what is wrong?
Exactly that.

Antivirus programs have to be one of the biggest scams in the computer world today. You hear about viruses everywhere, and then you get conned into thinking that you need to pay some company a ton of money for a lame program that invades your computer, or otherwise you're completely open to viruses. Don't believe the hype.

The problem is that people just don't know there are free alternatives, and that they're commonly much better than the programs you have to pay for.

From personal experience, having AVG Antivirus and Spybot S&D installed, you can protect yourself from just about anything. AVG is spectacular at detecting infected or dangerous files when they get onto your hard drive, and doing a spyware scan with Spybot every month or so, I've literally NEVER found any viruses on my computer.

The best suggestion I can make though, is to just stay away from stuff that looks dangerous. Keep your eyes open, and don't just download any file out there. do all of this stuff, and you'll likely never have problems with viruses again.

Then, go and enjoy Steam. :)

That can work for some people, but others prefer to just map as they go, without an overall plan for how everything is going to go. It leaves more to chance, in a way. Of course, I assume you're just talking about deathmatch or Counter-Strike maps here... otherwise, there's little purpose.

and is it bad to run on 640x480?
Extremely. The bare minimum these days is 1024x768. ;)

The only thing that I can think of right now that you should look into before buying that card is whether your power supply can, well, supply it with enough power. That thing is a monster (for an AGP card), and it apparently needs a minimum of a 450 watts to run stable. Unfortunately, if your computer was built by a major manufacturer, it's probably not going to have a powerful enough PSU to run it. Usually, they just put in a bare minimum, since most people will never even think of installing a powerful video card into it.

Look on the side of your PSU, and there should be a little sticker there that tells you the maximum wattage. If it's anything under 450W, it may just run, but you won't be able to guarantee the stability of it.

What the hell? Are you people crazy? It's not an extension at all! I didn't have to install anything extra to get it... just go to Options > Advanced and in the General tab, check the "check my spelling as I type" box. It's a default feature of FireFox 2.0, not an extension. It was on by default for me, but if not, do turn it on.
any ways, do u people here worry more about the spellings or the topic? or is it just that you have nothing to say so u worry about other people's spellings? well if thats so then why just not post stupid things and get to the topic?
Jesus Christ, do you read anything you type up? A few spelling errors isn't a problem, but with people like you, it becomes impossible to understand what you're even trying to say. I assure you, we're not nit-picking. This IS a problem.

in Your Mod's (past and present) Post #227392
I forgot what my first mod was called, but it basically had you waking up in your suburban house hearing a big explosion next door, and then going into the house the noise came from and you see that somebody opened a portal to Xen... or something. I really didn't think it through at all, and it never did work, because the first map, set in the suburbs as I said, was so friggin' huge it wouldn't compile. I had only been mapping for about three months before I decided to make it, so I was very inexperienced and had no idea what the limits of the GoldSrc engine were. The way I'd planned it, each chapter was going to only have one map, and the maps were going to be huge. I'd written up plans for every chapter, and they were all in places like cities, neighborhoods, forests, deserts, etc. You get the idea. :zonked:

Anyway, here's a more conventional list of my failed mods (I've never completed any) in chronological order.

Into the Dark

This one was a kind of puzzle-based mod with minimal combat planned. After some scientists had discovered and entered an Egyptian tomb, there was an earthquake, and they were all trapped inside. Radio communication from them was also mysteriously cut, so you're sent in to find out what happened to them. It was a pretty average story, with you going in and finding them all killed, then having to escape from a bunch of aliens.

I got pretty far into the development of it, but I was having problems getting textures for it, and at the same time I got sidetracked on another mod...

Mission A10-11

This horribly named mod was born after playing a really shitty GoldenEye Source map, and declaring to everyone on the server that I was going to go make a Half-Life 1 map that would look way better. Well, I did that, but it turned into more than one map, and it somehow got a story.

You were to be some agent sent into a military research facility where the soldiers had turned evil and killed all the scientists working there. It seems like I had some elaborate story planned out for it, and I got pretty far into development (about five or six large maps) until I discovered a little thing called the grid. The grid allowed me to line everything up extremely well, and the textures would now fit everything perfectly. Unfortunately, I had built every one of the previous maps without using the grid, and I decided it would be far too hard to adapt to this new way of building things.

Half-Life: FUBAR (V1)

FUBAR will always stand as one of my more successful attempts at creating a mod. Whether or not it's ever completed, I can always say that I got really far into this, and have created a really professional looking (if yet unfinished) mod.

At the time I came up with the idea for this, I was really intent on making a mod based in the Half-Life universe, inside Black Mesa. All the textures were there, so all I needed was a good idea and confidence in my brushwork and entity skills.

All I was having trouble with was the character. Thinking about all the different types of people working in Black Mesa, I eventually decided that the only people who you hadn't played in mods before were the maintenance people. So that was it, you would play as a maintenance worker who woke up late one day, and went down to some dark room in the bowels of Black Mesa to fix a broken water pump. Obviously, while you were down there, the resonance cascade happens, and you end up escaping in the same way every other mod has you do.

However, I got sidetracked again, and started making another mod alongside this...

Black Hornet

This was supposed to be a very dark, gritty, and depressing Matrix-inspired mod, with worlds that were bathed in green lighting. It was also supposed to be short. Well, it might have been, but I never worked on it long enough to find out.

As another anonymous "agent" of some sort, your mission is to recover a briefcase that was stolen from an armored truck by the henchmen of a notorious crime lord. The briefcase contains a device used to open portals through to Xen. The briefcase has been tracked to an abandoned apartment building on the bad side of the city, and you're going in to get it. As is expected, the crime lord escapes with the device, and opens up the portals. Aliens start coming through the portals, you try and get to the crime lord to stop the disaster, etc. etc.

I really liked the idea of the mod, but I think I got a bit caught up with making textures for it. Anyway, it died fast.

Half-Life: FUBAR (V2)

I eventually tired of the story for the original FUBAR, and decided to wipe the slate clean and start all over. By this time, my mapping skills had improved considerably, and I felt the old maps didn't represent my current mapping level too well.

I'm still not giving away the story about this, but in the middle of making it, I was recruited onto the Hostage Situation team. I've bought web spsce for this mod, and have a half developed website for it, so it's definitely not dead... just on hold for a bit while some other things are cleared up.

Half-Life: Hostage Situation

I guess we all know the story behind this. I figured my position on the team would be pretty insignificant, but I ended up taking on more than I signed up for. Still working on it on and off.

Averted Doom

I planned for this to be a tiny little mod of maybe four maps. Like Hostage Situation, it's set in a dilapidated facility, but unlike Hostage Situation, this is in the middle of the jungle. It's a rather simple story where you're dropped from a helicopter and you just clear out some grunts from the facility.

I never got much done other than the helicopter and some textures, but I may come back to it in the future, if I get the inspiration.

...

Well, that was a tad long winded. ;)
