You're after some really high specs for that money... they're laptops, not desktops. If you do find those specs for that then watch out coz another feature of it will suffer, such as the video card.

Basically, with that budget Id recommend heading over to Acer's bargain bin, sorry but I just dont rate your chances too high.

I was in Rome a year ago. I stayed in a hotel overlooking the Fontana di Trevi, and it was very nice, and I want to go back there now.
No pics then? :) I went there last year as well, and this year when my sister went her boyfriend proposed to her by the fountain.

...she said yes.

The gameplay was a bit dull, but the graphics were amazing. I was lucky enough to play on near max at 1680 x 1050 widscreen res. The water looks great, and the beginning greatly reminded me of FarCry how the guy on the phone helps you out.

...I reserve judgement until I see the final product.

Its all about multithreading - different parts of code can be run by each core efficiently to result in the task running quicker. Until recently (about 2 years), generally 1 core ran better as programmers didn't implement the capable in their programs to make use of more cores. Nowadays 2 cores is a definate improvement over 1 as nearly everyone makes use of their capability.

The speed stated for these chips is the speed of each core, so yes - technically dual-core stating 2.4ghz clock speed is 4.8. However, don't expect performance to match this. You wouldn't get twice the performance of a single core 2.4ghz.

Also, you needn't worry about power comsumption and heat as the new generation of dual cores, specially the C2Ds are extremely efficient and run cool.

Basically, it would be hard to avoid a dual-core in a desktop / laptop nowadays, no matter what you pay.... and if you had the option, don't even think about settling for one core - you will regret it.

I'd say pretty much anything can handle HL2 - but its a completely different story with Oblivion. Laptops + Oblivion = NO

The X1600 isn't a bad card - i've put it into a few earlier budget builds and it seems to hold out quite well - trying games like FEAR really showed them off. But as I said, it depends on the resolution. The larger the monitor, the more powerful card you're gonna need.

Sorry, but what currency are we talking about?

As for upgradeability (sp?) - now days the possibilities are much better - you can easily change RAM, HD, and optical - as well as being able to change the lcd panel for a higher quality one, etc.

By todays standards... games such as HL2 aren't classed as state-of-the-art - despite its sexiness (sp?) even now! however, OTOH, Oblivion will destroy any laptop and most desktops that you throw at it. Laptops aren't build for gaming - its just that some manufactures such as Evesham attempt to stick a more powerful card it in.

Trust me when I say its not worth spending a lot more to be able to play newer / games at higher quality. These 'tops have dreadful battery life, are loud, very hot and inefficient. Its not worth it.

I agree that 17"ers are a bit extreme for laptops - they become heavy, bulky and worse on the battery. I wouldn't go bigger than 15" / 15.4" - the equivalent. Also, this lower res. will help with fps in newer games.

do the fans have to hurt... or are they to stop the player from jumping? Otherwise... just make them not hurt and place a trigger_hurt or whatever over them - see if that solves the problem. As it would be a square type brush it may accept that the player isn't actually in the region.

Huh? Thanks, but the liquids ok - its just the card im pissed off about. I just bought another 2nd hand one of Ebay today to replace - still an X1900XTX. Might as well try and sell this one for... well, something.

Although when it comes... not sure whether to Water cool it - as I think that caused the resistor to explode. I missed a bit with thermal paste. Damn.

Well... finally got my new comp built today / yesterday. Thanks everyone for your help - especially m0p. I end up using Zerex, it seemed far less hassle.

The final line-up was:

Intel C2D E6850 @ 3.48ghz (currently - will be higher)
ASUS Commando MB
2GB Corsair Ballistix PC2-6400
Silverstone Black TJ-07 case (fucking massive.... and over 200 quid!)

the rest of the crap was from my old pc, 200GB and 300GB HDs and Opticals.

and as above... except the fans are currently Silverstones as well as gave me loads free

3 x SilenX Red Wing 120mm Fans (radiator)
AlphaCool GT Stealth III Radiator
Danger Den TDX 775 CPU Block
XSPC 250mm Passive Reservoir
Laing D5 12V Pump
AlphaCool (I think) X1900 WB - useless ATM!!!

However, I killed my X1900XTX - one of the resistors / capacitors exploded!!! I went f**king mad - and started kicking things.

...Is there anything I can do about this - DIY job? Any ideas PLEASE!!! :(

Anywhere, might post some pics later... CPUs idling @ 26 Celsius ATM, but im stuck using an X850XT PE which sucks so benchmarking is useless.

Its late.... im tired.

Thanks

Try re-aligning your textures - one the fourth pict above is a good example on the left wall - you can see a join which shouldn't be there. Otherwise, looking quite good! The rain also seems to suit the enviroment. Try adding some thundering & lightning or something! :)
