Wow, those models are really nice.

Is this Fred a different entity than the normal grunt, with more health or a higher attack or something?

If you look at the directories, you can tell he's got the game set up for Counter-Strike: Source, yet he's trying to use ZHLT to compile.

If you're trying to build something to scale in Half-Life, it's still going to be easier just to eyeball it, and it'll probably end up looking more realistic.

Try launching the map manually, from the console. I know it's some problem with your configuration in Hammer, but I'm not sure exactly what. I've had the same error before.

Go to the "Steam/steamapps/" folder and open half-life.gcf with it, then extract halflife.wad into your "Steam/steamapps/*username*/half-life/valve" folder.

Actually, it looks like he has Steam, in which case he needs to find his half-life.gcf file and extract the texture pack from there. WON Half-Life puts it in the Valve folder by default, not in the PAK.

You know what I think could be a very useful feature? A little checkable box that would switch a swear word filter on and off. I wouldn't use it personally, but some are more sensitive than others about that kind of thing, and this place does attract a wide variety of people. It would be a hundred times better than the permanent ones that some forums have, and completely unobtrusive for those who don't care to have it activated. What does everybody else think?

You all spend so much time on a mapping site for an 8 year old game that nobody cares about! And you don't even map anymore!
You're so horribly wrong, and yes I do.

Oh, and you aren't making me feel bad about my so-called pathetic existence. I'm quite happy about it, actually.

As far as I know, there are no plans on updating the current site any more. Even if you find a problem with it, it's not going to be fixed until TWHL3, which is being built from the ground up, and therefore will not have the same problems.

A (hopefully) helpful tip to any new members reading this:

When joining any forum with established, long time members, it's best to lay low for a couple weeks, lurk around to figure out people's personalities, maybe make a couple inconspicuous posts, and then start joining in on discussions more.

Bursting in and starting an argument, or posting controversial opinions on day one is a sure way to get flamed and be hated from the start. People have absolutely no idea how you normally act, and assume you're just an asshole, because they have nothing to base your personality on. There's no way to back yourself up when you've just started digging in, and it's likely everybody will be against you.

Another huge mistake is to assume everybody knows who you are and respects you, just because you're a well established and long time member on other similar communities. I'd tell people to look at what Orpheus did here as an example of this, but now that's kind of... impossible.

I'm aware that it's unique. I can't argue with that. All I'm saying is that it gets to a point where you really confuse the player, and it's hard to pick up on. Being the one who created the system, it's hard to recognize things like this. It's possible I'm entirely wrong, but since I was confused by the first installment of this, I'm wondering how it'll be with even more features.

What are you on about, Boxtop? I once made a flat map that spanned almost the entire available area in Hammer. It ran fine. I didn't ever put too much detail in that, but I've seen in done in mods like The Gate, where they made gigantic deserts with terrain and all.

I think some people are having trouble seeing the difference between newbies and idiots.

Newbies do not deserve to be scorned for their ignorance towards either mapping or the ways of this community. It may take time, but they'll all learn to use Google and look through the tutorials before asking any questions, and they'll all learn to become proficient in finding solutions to their problems. The way I see it, it's not that these newbies are stupid; it's that they don't know how to figure things out for themselves. More experienced mappers encounter problems as frequently as the newbies do, we just don't talk about it as much, and we don't ask for anywhere near as much assistance. In this way we are all alike, we just don't show it as much.

Now, idiots are a different story. Idiots are the people who come here, show little or no interest in mapping, make asses out of themselves, and make other people's lives miserable with their lame and annoying antics. As far as I'm concerned, these people don't deserve any sympathy, and we shouldn?t expend any effort on making it a better place for them.

My point is, the vast majority of the people who get treated poorly are totally asking for it. If you?re a newcomer here, and the primary reason you signed up wasn?t to ask questions, answer them, or submit your maps and discuss mapping, you shouldn?t be here in the first place.

That?s my opinion anyway.

Is it just me, or did anyone else enjoy the under-the-bridge segment in Half-Life 2?
I'd forgotten about that part. That was undoubtedly the best part of Half-Life 2 for me. Pure genius, really.

Team Fortress 2 never caught my interest, for some reason. TFC didn't either, come to think of it.

In no particular order...
  • I started Half-Life 2 up for the first time.
  • I beat Half-Life.
  • The end sequence of Opposing Force, when the G-Man confronts you. It was kind of depressing and shocking at the same time, but it really was a great ending.
  • Anything in Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. Those were both very epic games, but the first in the series not so much.
  • I had just gotten the car chase sequence for Hostage Situation to run for the very first time, and I was awed by my own incredible ingenuity, expertise, and the superb awesomeness of that map. But seriously, it's on rare occasion that I get such a thrill out of playing my own maps.
  • Beat Pokemon Silver. Hey, come on, it was the first game I ever owned!
  • In Counter-Strike (can't remember now if it was Source) a new round had just started, and I walked into a room with an AK and killed everybody on the other team in about three seconds. They were all crammed into a small corridor and confused, so I just stood there and picked them off one by one.

For Half-Life, make your steps 8 or 16 units high (8 is usually better), and your doors about 64 units wide and 96 units high. For Counter-Strike, your steps should be 8 units high (16 will look about the height of a desk), and your doors should be 48 units wide and 80 units in height.

Based on these simple dimensions, you can get a feel of your scale. Also use your player start to judge how big things will be. It's not perfect, but it gives you a general idea of the scale you're working on.

But always remember that for Counter-Strike, things are significantly smaller than in Half-Life. This means that all those prefabs (which I personally think are already too big) will look really horrible.

But how would it even work, if the sidebar was taller than the height of a person's screen?
It's like having no phones in an office building!
