If you're so cut you should bring it up with Ant. Because he was the one who didn't want this thread closed.

The reason this thread was created was because of a bug TWHL2 had with long threads.

And I pretty much said that making a new thread would be silly. Then suddenly Ant asked why the thread was closed, and I had no idea so he deleted the old one and reopened this one, and I moved the posts back.
<Ant> Now Playing will be the epic TWHL thread.

in Game_Text: How do I make a line break Post #251743
that's why i said nearly. \n is commonly recognised as the "new line" character, and is in perl, python, C/C++, java, PHP, and more.

fyi, VbCrLf is equivalent to \r\n, which is a carriage return and a line feed (the windows implementation of a newline). linux and OSX use just \n.

anyway, this is ridiculously off-topic, but 'tis okay because the question was answered already :P

it's not hard to code at all, but i'm not changing it because it works exactly how i want it to.
so it isn't a mistake. i was aware of what i was programming and i made it how i wanted it to work. it's not a bug or a mistake.

admit that i'm lazy? sure. but remember that i coded the whole site from nothing for no personal gain. if i was really lazy, you'd still be using the old site. (which, by the way, behaved the same in regards to PMs)

maybe later when i get some time i'll do up a javascript thing that doesn't let you submit the PM until the subject is filled in

turbine is a TERRIBLE map. it's the last one i'd choose for a custom map. it looks bad and plays bad.

i haven't played fastlane so i can't comment

@saw: redstone looks okay but it's pretty crappy - too similar to well and granary so it's boring.

if anyone get's a chance to play cp_steel give it a try. it's confusing at first but it's a good concept and actually fun to play. it gets really insane at times (which is awesome).

but yeah.....turbine? what the hell is valve thinking? even I could make a better map :/

true, several times i have tried to open photoshop PNG's in irfanview and there has been wierd shit all over the parts that are supposed to be transparent.

that's because paint has crappy resize - you can't specify the dimensions, you can only make it as a percentage of the original picture.

anyway, as i said originally, photoshop is the best thing for this particular job, but mspaint is good for printscreen jobs (printscreen, paste into paint, select the part you want, copy, new file, paste, save), which i do quite a bit. it's also good for games that don't have a screenshot key, just hit printscreen and paste into paint later. the jpeg quality is pretty much ideal for web-quality shots, as disposable images.

as for your comments on PNG, strider, you are wrong. PNG is best for images with lots of whitespace (or any other space of some single colour), making it ideal for screenshots of websites, plain text, and the like. transparency is a useful addition, yes, but PNG is not by any way limited to small graphics. large images with lots of whitespace compress far better as PNG then JPEG. in addition, PNG compression is lossless, which furthers it's usefulness with screenshots of plain text and websites. (although it is not limited to these uses)

i can confirm that mspaint does NOT screw up PNG images. i use it all the time to paste in printscreens. the save as jpeg doesn't have any options but it's decent enough if you want to upload a screenshot of tf2 or something you printscreened.

mspaint doesn't reduce the quality or anything :/
just save as a PNG
you can use ifranview to resize, but not crop. so crop with paint, resize with ifranview.

that is hardly a standard resolution.

anyway, if you want to be lazy, just provide two sizes:
1600x1200, 2560x1600

5:4 and 16:9 users can figure it out.

if you want to be less lazy, resize these to the dimensions in strider's post, plus the ones in zombieloffe's post.

I don't think he was ever on that list...not according to the wayback machine.

According to his profile on the VDC (which was last updated in 2006), he works at Valve.

He is also in the credits list for EP2 and Portal.
(episode two content.gcf:ep2\scripts\credits.txt)

On his VDC talk page, someone suggested that the VERC tutorials be converted to the VDC, and Chris said that would be a good idea. So no concerns about page hits on VERC or the content staying in one place. But the VERC tutorials were never moved, and that was almost 3 years ago, so I think it's safe to assume that they won't be transferred to the VDC.

Members of TWHL won't "get" the tutorials. They'd be credited to the original author.

Hmm, well as I said, all the images are missing on the VERC site, which kinda ruins the tutorials. As for who owned the site...isn't it Chris Bokitch, from Valve? He went by the name 'autolycus'. I seem to recall that he coded it from scratch.

The authors of the tutorials themselves are probably harder to contact. I don't think most of them have been active in the community any time recently. Of course any tutorials hosted here would give full credit to the original author from VERC.

It seems that VERC is down, and it is unknown whether this is permanent or not. Either way, we all know that all the tutorials images on the site went missing anyway, which was a damn shame because a lot of the tutorials on the site were extremely good.

I propose TWHL gets all the content (tutorials mostly - anything else?) that is (was?) on VERC and mirror it here, rewriting tutorials if they need it, as well as redoing any images that have disappeared.

This could be achieved through the Wayback Machine. If I get enough interest, I will start coding an interface for people to add content.

Anyone else think this is a good idea? I, for one, don't want the editing community to lose this information. Discuss with any thoughts or suggestions on the matter.
