The fractal displacement thing could be very useful in theory, but you'd have to randomize it somehow in order to make it functionally useful.

Well that's news to me. Then why does every mod say you need a copy of HL2 to play. O_O
As Penguinboy mentioned, HL2 comes with the asset packages which are used for the content and whatnot. I don't believe you get the full extent of these packages with DOD or CSS (which used to come in bundles with HL2, but are now sold individually).
ARRRGGGGGG!!!! Why do I have sit here and miss all these cool HL2 mods just cause HL2 want's internet!!! I hate valve some times...

The point is, after gun control - gun crime rapidly increases because there is then a much higher demand for firearms. It gives criminals the opportunity to make a lot of money very quickly by setting up an illegal firearms trade. Often, these people are in Government, police and military - but that's another issue.
Not only does it change the manner in how criminals get weapons (instead of obtaining a license and purchasing a firearm, he simply purchases it from a fellow thug or off of the black market) but it also creates more gun posession crime - Collectors or owners of weaponry, left with no legal option, either must give up their interest and collection, or obtain their weapons through other illicit means, making these once innocent people another crime statistic.

It's the marginalization of yet another group of citizens; the obese, the homeless, drug users and smokers have already been targeted and attempts have been made to curtail such lifestyles and activities through opressive bans and regulations or through other restrictive legal means and by force of the government/nanny state.

The punch blocks are probably centrally located in a building such as a condo unit or apartment building (it's more convenient to have one huge punch block or two as opposed to one for each unit) and unless they're properly labelled (they rarely are) or you have a booklet labeling the block and it's locations you're out of luck. I'd think it would be a local problem (bad jacks) as opposed to a problem with the punch block (if they're left alone they'll last for quite some time) but it's always a possibility that two of the four jacks for your condo are disconnected from the block.

I can't really tell from the picture all too well, but it does look like it's seen a lot of use (paint on the cables, etc) so I'd guess the jack's just gone or wired improperly. If your efforts to fix the problem fail you should probably talk to management; generally in condos they should have their own maintenance people who'll repair problems with the unit or subsidize the costs of repair. (And maybe it is a problem with the punch block, in which case they'll take care of it for you.)

There's the possibility that the wires could just be shot. There should be a screw you can remove to inspect the inside of the jacks; if there's wires that aren't attached to the jack you can try to re-attach them (you'll probably have to solder them on), but you can probably just replace the whole thing for cheap with a new jack from radio shack or home depot or something.

in Including models in map. Post #220809
I don't belive you can bundle them up with your map in HL1 akin to textures. You'll have to include them with your map - you can always write a server information file to tell servers to send the models to clients when they download the map, as well, but I'm not quite sure how that's done as I haven't worked with HL1 in a very long time. There may be a tutorial on it here with regards to that.

Unless you're asking how to insert them into your map, in which case you use a cycler entity.

You can be sure that thanks to the PATRIOT act, while it may be a breach of civil rights, it's a necessary one! In fact, no breach of civil rights is too great to protect America from the dangers and the horrors of "TERRORISM"! Such nonsense is fed to your average Americans through the media and other outlets, however, so people will believe it without question.
Adults (especially those with power for some reason) usually have very little comprehension of what teenagers are doing when it comes to computers and the internet. I don't think they ever will. It's not exactly their fault if they want to prevent any sort of trouble, their mistake was not talking to the kid, though.
It's a generational thing, but it's not just adults with power. Plenty of parents don't get video games, computers, etcetera - They didn't grow up with video game consoles or computers in their home, rather they grew up with radio and television instead. I think it's just difficult to understand all the new technological terms and the new technology in general; I started messing around with computers at a pretty young age and gradually grew to know the terms and parts and all of that - So while it's extremely easy for me to rattle off computer terms or names, it's not knowledge that they have or grew up around, while I'm sure they could confuse me with stuff about record players and 8-tracks or something like that.
I think the whole comparisons to VT and whatnot are quite unfounded and silly, especially since the shooter in that incident did not even play or 'train' with video games at all.

I think it's also silly that tools are all of a sudden weapons. Am I a terrorist because I sleep with a crowbar by my bed, or have a toolbox full of screwdrivers, large wrenches and a hammer or two? It's not like I'm going to go on a rampage with them, if you're trying to kill people, there are much more effective means.

(Watch me get booked under terrorism charges for saying that I know of effective means to kill people, it wouldn't suprise me one bit.)

Not everyone here on this forum would like Trainspotting or A Clockwork Orange or Rocko's Modern Life or Arrested Development and I wouldn't expect people to like the same TV shows or movies or type of comedy or entertainment as I do, and it's perfectly acceptable to express your opinion. That's what internets forums should be all about!

Lots of people die every day, not everybody is going to make a headline, but usually, when a school gets shot up that makes front page news because schools are factories for tomorrows workers, blue or white collar, it doesn't matter.

Perhaps this will urge the US to reconsider it's gun laws.
I doubt it'll make anyone reconsider gun laws; there's the whole bullshit with the second amendment and all. Then again, our administration has already shown little regard to constitutional rights so any changes that are unconstitutional wouldn't be suprising in the slightest.

in 14 year old to be tried as terrorist Post #218192
Hey Rabid, a little bird tells me you watched Terrorstorm, am I correct?
Yep, own it ;D
Every attack is being labelled a terrorist attack nowadays. What happened to the good old days of fucked up people and normal murderers? It's mostly media-whoring from governmental organisations to rally public support through the use of buzz words.
Of course, but the scarier thing is, that people actually believe this bullshit in my country and will do anything to help the government and STOP THE TERRORISTS even if it involves giving up precious personal liberties or things of the like. People are just so sheepish here that they need the media and news to give them their information because they can't formulate opinions and think for themselves - and our horrendous public "education" system isn't doing anything to help it either - if you think for yourself and are inquisitive you won't do well at all in school, but that's just the thing you need to succeed in the real-world if you don't want to be a dumbfuck.
Prison sentences for mentally insane people hardly helps.
Often they don't even help people who are sane of mind. Of course there's going to be a few people who it affects (who wants to be locked up for 40 years?) but there are always the people who do get out of long sentences and go right back to committing crimes as well. Restorative justice is much more effective - making people who tag walls and dumpsters clean it up, making people who steal or maim work with those they've hurt, etcetera. That's much more meaningful and touching to everyone then just locking people away for years.

in 14 year old to be tried as terrorist Post #218063
Obviously that's why - but there have been plenty of other cases where minors are not tried as adults for carrying weapons or even assaulting other people (there was a case where two 10 year old boys in Florida threw some concrete blocks at a homeless guy the other day, injured him pretty bad, and they're probably going to get off with a minimum sentence.) I'm also curious as to how they've deduced his master plan of TERRORISM and are charging him as such - It says he told them that he planned to hold his class hostage, but that's all. There are kids who have brought guns to school and even shot other students (on accident or not) and they've got off with much less severe punishments.

Go read this:

http://www.kpho.com/news/11509875/detail.html?rss=pho&psp=news

It's silly enough that he's being tried for 'terrorism' (what isn't terrorism in America in this day and age though) but they also want to try him as an adult. Generally I've only seen younger kids tried as adults once they've killed people (in the beltway sniper case for example if I recall) - next thing you know he'll be off to Guantanamo for being a TERRORIST and a FREEDOM HATER!!! This is absurd.

It's worse that about 68% of people who take their little survey think that he should be placed on trial as an adult and punished as one. Also, you only see stuff like this labelled as terrorism after 9/11. Remember Columbine? I don't remember anyone calling that a terrorist act and there were certainly a lot more dead and larger weapons involved.

You can't directly scale them, but you can adjust their scales in the .vmt. Since most things like trash and posters are scaled properly I use decals for that and overlays for things that need to be adjusted in terms of size, such as graffiti or larger posters or something.

in decals? Post #217066
I guess it's a personal thing, I don't really like Overlays at all. They're suited towards special applications of decals on surfaces such as displacements or around curves or at angles, while decals are useful for things on flat surfaces like posters on flat walls or trash decals on flat surfaces on the ground. They're limited in count in your maps and they also have a face limit to be applied to, and they generally break my compiles which is why I try to avoid them.
