True, although you can't take multiple screenshots quickly without pausing and minimizing the game if you do it Caboose's way.

Once you've done that, they're saved into either the Half-Life or Valve directory, depending on whether you're using Steam or the original Sierra version. They're saved in BMP format, so make sure you resize them and convert them to JPG with an ample amount of compression before posting them online, eh?

Nor do I, although some gritty/realistic textures have been used, and they look very similar to certain ones in Half-Life 2.

in (CS.1.6 mapping ) Custom Models? Post #216879
What's all this crap about cycler entities and them being solid an stuff? They might be solid, but it's not precise, not like you would get with a good clip brush built around it. All you would get otherwise is a box around the general area of the model.

Just use a monster_generic, type in the path for the model (don't browse), check the "not solid" flag, and build some clip brushes around its shape. It's that easy.

P.S.
Cycler_sprite has aways crashed Hammer for me when I use it for models, just like Elon said. Not sure why, but it does it right after you close the properties box after typing in the model path.

in Door Problem Post #216872
Funny how it really isn't that self explanitory, eh? ;)

The problem is that you have a brush with the CLIP or ORIGIN texture on it, but not all sides of that brush are covered with it. When you use these textures, you can't just put them on one face, the whole brush has to have that same texture on it.

I think this same error may also occur if you have a CLIP brush that has been accidentally turned into a brush based entity, but that could be a different error I'm thinking of.

Let me just get this out of the way first:

Please, please, don't release your first map, because no matter how good you think it may be, it's probably going to suck, and you'll just be disappointed by the mediocre response.

And to answer your question, yes, there is a monster_snark. You do have the Half-Life FGD loaded, right?

It may help, but I'm not willing to change, due to the limitations of these other rendering modes. Especially software, that's awful.

It is an old laptop indeed, but not too old to handle Half-Life by any means. It was made 3 years after it came out, was top of the line at the time, and it far surpasses the minimum requirements, which obviously, are extremely low. I've played Half-Life on much weaker systems than this, and it plays fine.

I suppose it's just not entirely compatible, rather than not being powerful enough, which it most certainly is.

I wouldn't suggest playing maps in Direct3D unless you absolutely have to, though. Decals won't appear, and the lighting looks all blotchy and ugly.

Opposing Force isn't a mod, it's an expansion pack (technically the same thing, although retail), and it's not free. However, since the advent of Steam, you are now able to get it for free if you own Half-Life. If you didn't buy your copy of Half-Life on Steam, you can download it and register your copy in there, and both the expansions will become available to you.

It's sad, because if nobody can get it working, HL1 mapping is going to die right alongside XP.

Still, it's gotta be something you did to your computer to make it so bad. You don't just get random lag spikes from doing nothing. It was probably a virus or something. And Steam not starting... Well, I dunno about that, but again, I usually tend to blame these things on the user. I've never had problem with Steam like that, and most were cleared up long ago.

And if all else fails, I'd go to Windows 2000. I've heard it's great, and it's pretty much compatible with everything XP is.

No. It's your bad luck. If you still have Windows XP or a restore disk, use that. Otherwise, just get a "totally legal" version for free.

Lame, Dave, Just lame. Not to mention it doesn't even make sense, since that rocket didn't go to Xen.

saw1833, Xen isn't an alien planet, it's a "border world", and the upcoming Source remake of Half-Life in fact does not have Source tacked on the end of it anymore.

Nobody would know how many hours it took. Time in games usually doesn't flow like it does in real life. However, I believe it took 2 days, am I right?

A3: Yes.
