He's also good at [snip] camera work
And this is why whenever I have machinima problems I await one of his responses. Always nice to have somebody here with good cinema experience to understand what I'm talking about or why I want something to work instead of asking me stupid questions. (Why would you want to change FOV? That's stupid!)

My friend is mapping for TF2. My bad, didn't notice the OP was trying to map for HL2.
As said before though, SrcSDK requires no configuration, if it doesn't work right from the get go, something is really wrong. Have you actually run HL2 before you tried using the SrcSDK?

Odd. Satchmo said that Valve broke hammer a while ago and my friend is still having severe problems with the editor, crashing and errors.
I don't recall specifics but I know he did state he was having problems with the map files becoming corrupted [as a result of the crashing] and not being able to load maps at times.

Edit blocks are like cockblocks for the brain.

Actually, I suppose I worded that poorly: It's not that I couldn't get into it because it was similar, those are supposed to be two entirely separate thoughts.

Dxtory is great because like Gamecam it actually allowed you to use codecs. Improving on Gamecam you can use any codec that your machine has installed, and you can tweak them to your delicate needs.
Fraps is the best quality [Can be negligible with a lossless or very high quality codec] because it's completely uncompressed, but it's filesizes and disk usage are very impacting.

So instead you play MW3 implying it's not too much like MW2 which isn't too much like CoD4?
I don't follow your logic here. I said I couldn't get into BF3, and because it was so similar to homefront, a game I could get into, I'd rather play that instead. I never said anything about MW.

It's pretty much become obsolete to me once BF3 came out though. That's the ultimate modern multiplayer shooter out at the moment imho.
I couldn't very much get into BF3. I felt it was too much like homefront for me to not just simply play homefront instead.

Yes, and my point is, is that is literally singleplayer gameplay, with the option of playing multiplayer. If it is required that you have two or more people for the game to actually launch and sucessfully play, then it's a multiplayer game.
TF2 or CSS on a local game without any other players in the server is singleplayer under the definition that there is a single person in the server playing, not multiple people.

I still don't see how it's a multiplayer only game.
From everything I've read about this game, it's a singleplayer game with the option to play coop with your friends. Like L4D, or alien swarm. It doesn't matter if it's heavily focused on playing with your friends like l4d or AS, it's singleplayer core gameplay.

It's not PVP, it's not like playing TF2 on a local server with bots, it's a singleplayer game with the option to have your friends join you in a world and play cooperatively with you.
Think L4D, AS, Portal 2, SS2. Not at all like WoW, which is a PVP MMO.

Lately steam has been freezing for me, when it never has been before. Not bsoding but definitely noticing some hiccups with some recent update.

You could probably say it isn't Steam but the game itself.
I close CSS, and most of the time steam freezes, I look in task manager and hl2.exe and gameoverlayui.exe are still running but at this point steam is frozen even if I end the processes, so I'm forced to restart steam.
I still say it's related to steam, perhaps the ingame overlay is fucked up.

I'm not sure how heavily focused on Multiplayer the game is, but best I can tell it has a singleplayer campaign and what I'm saying is that if that were the case, you should only have to log into your account if you chose to play multiplayer instead of singleplayer.
This is the way it is in most games, but for example RvS Vegas 2 you have the main menu, and if you click on multiplayer it will ask you to sign in, you sign in and you're in the multiplayer menu. If you don't want to play MP you just hit singleplayer and you're playing, connection free or not.

What I'm saying is that you should not have to log in at the start of the game [meaning you have to log in just to launch the game to get to the main menu], only if you choose to play MP from the menu.

The security is the DRM, with video games the right to play it [pass security's clearance] should be that you bought the game, maybe check the CD or a CD key or such, because those are reliable and proven methods. Instead, the security uses an abitrary system that is unreliable and therefore people who should have passed security's clearance didn't.

Steam is for the most part reliable, but it again is not as reliable as other methods, and so when steam goes down [happened maybe a couple times this year] nobody could do anything to play their games unless they were luckily logged in or in offline mode, meanwhile people with pirated steam games didn't have this problem.

Well, it's not really meant to be a literal comparison, but basically it means the security doesn't follow a logical method of deciding who's allowed in or not [If there's an age restriction to come in, if they're causing trouble etc] but rather they decide who get's let in or not based on their own opinions of a person. So therefore, legitimate ticket buyers who would have enjoyed the show didn't get to, because of some arbitrary system.

Like I said, it's not meant to be taken literally, the point of the story is that legitimate buyers can't judge what you say is good because of some system that failed for them, so they have every right to complain about it, just not about what they didn't get to enjoy because that would be ignorant.

Sorry about my terrible sentence formatting, I usually type things out as they would be said, so I prefer to use commas as pauses or seperators instead of completely stopping a sentence.

Well I think it's like a great comedian act that has security that doesn't follow logical procedure to letting people in and just simply picks people at will. You could argue that the security doesn't dictate the quality of the show itself, but the point is, is that you can't even see the show at all.

Going off on a slight tangent here, but
I love Steam, but its offline support could be seriously improved since offline mode only seems to work properly 75% of the time.
Actually I think it works fine pretty much all of the time, it's just understanding how it works. For offline mode to function, you have to have an active internet connection because it has to log into your account, and then it goes into offline mode after it's verified your information.

To be honest, I don't see much use in the mode because you have to know ahead of time that your internet is going to go out in order to use it.
I'm pretty sure it only logs in to access your game library, otherwise people could just put a bunch of games in the steamapps folder that they don't own, and then play them in offline mode, free and legally.

Well, my point is, if it's not an only-multiplayer game like WoW [MMO], that comparison doesn't apply.
Requiring the user to log in and have an active internet connection for playing multiplayer can be done without DRM. It's done in pretty much any game I could even think of. [Except for Conviction and Steam games, which are already DRM'd in a sense.]

From what I can tell it has a campaign, and in my opinion you should not have to even have an account to just play that, let alone be logged in with a 24\7 internet connection.

Yeah tried it, if I enable cheats and use the fov command it makes my weapon disappear [which is normal] but doesn't change the fov. default_fov doesn't have any effect whatsoever.

Is it not possible to change FOV in CSS? I'm trying to do some basic filmmaking and I can't change the FOV at all. None of the commands work.

I'm starting to feel as though Source is being dumbed down to the point of it being useless for the most basic tasks. I used to be able to change the FOV pre-OB update.
EG: This wouldn't have worked without being able to change FOV [Focal length]

For now I'm setting the AR to 4:3 and then cropping to 16:9 which gives me a pretty close representation of 50mm, but I still want to go tighter.

in Source demo drive resets position Post #306155
I'm trying to smooth a demo and I'm finding that the drive function is just simply useless. You can move the camera, but the very instant you click again it resets it's position back to where it started.
It's impossible to disable drive after moving or click anything on the screen [EG setting a keyframe].

EDIT: Seems every single time I ask a question I always immediately find the answer. Alt tab out and back into the game. Works fine.

in Capture The Flag Post #306068
Alright fair enough man. Sorry for being a dick I thought you really were one of those people that believe this kind of work can be done with a simple line of code.

The rough outline for a CTF style gamemode would probably be:

You'd want to first of all code in an extra score keeping system so that you can keep track of what team has captured how many flags.
Then, you'd have to code in two [or more] flag entities that can be picked up, one for each team.
Then finally, you'd have to code in two [or more] flag base entities that would allow an opposing team to actually capture the enemy flag and get a score.

To be honest I don't think any of this would be particularly difficult, you'd just have to sit down and connect them all together in a way that works. Good luck.

I'm sorry but I cannot stand these questions. You cannot simply add a script to avoid having to do real work to get an entire gamemode to function. It doesn't work that way.

You could use an improvised entity setup but that is most likely going to be glitchy and a poor substitute for actual hard coding into the game files.
