The test is very relevant to the question.

The question "What is the percentage chance you actually have the disease?" is still valid, and still stands. It requires that you think carefully about all the information you have been given though, and not just the question itself, and the initial 1/10000 figure.

The answer is not 1/10000 (0.0001%) because thats just the chance of anyone having the disease.

The very fact that you've taken a test, and it said "YES YOU HAVE THE DISEASE" changes your chances of actually having it.

After all - it's a medical test which requires evidence to be collected showing that you do have the disease before it will give you a positive result.

And If there is actual medical evidence that you have the disease, then you're no longer just a random 1 person in 10,000. You're a person who has had the disease identified (rightly or wrongly) inside them.

Does that make sense to you now?

What could come from all this?
Not a great deal, I admit! :D

Here's a real paradox you can create yourself!

1. Get one piece of card.

2. Write "THE SENTENCE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS CARD IS TRUE" on one side of the card.

3. On the other side write ""THE SENTENCE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS CARD IS FALSE"

Paradox in a box! (or on a card, however you see it)

99%
This is the most common, wrong answer.

It works like this:

Your positive test result, with it's 99% accuracy means that either you are one of the 99% that have been correctly told that they have the disease, or that you are one of the other 1% who don't have the disease but have been incorrectly told that they do.

Imagine a million people take the test. Because it affects 1 in 10,000 -100 people out of the million actually have the disease.

Due to the 99% accuracy of the test, 99 of these hundred will be told correctly that they have the disease. On the other hand, the remaining 999,900 people do not have the disease, but 1% (or 9,999) of those are told incorrectly that they do.

So are you one of the 99 who has it, or one of the 9,999 who don't, but have been wrongly told they do?

9999:99

Which translates to 0.98% - the correct answer.

I know I said mcmitcho had got it right before, but he hadn't. I just hadn't done the sum he did (1/10000) correctly in my head at the time.

The test tells you that there is a 99% chance that you have the disease -- IE that you are one the 1 in 10,000.

But it's only 99% accurate - regardless of whether you have the disease or not.

What are the chances that the test is correct? (Maybe that should have been the question from the start)

Added cos Madcow posted while I was typing.

There are numerous types of paradox. Some are more 'paradoxy' than others, but by the dictionary definition, these maths ones qualify.

If expressed as a percentage, yes.

Put yourself in that position though. You take a test which is 99% percent accurate, and it says you have the disease. What's your first thought when you get the results?

It's counter-intuitive.

in Paradoxes Post #224839
It's a paradox, just a simple mathematical one.

Much like this -
Imagine there is a disease which affects 1 person out of every 10,000 in the world.

The disease is absolutely fatal. If you've got it, you've got a few months left, and then you'll just suddenly keel over and die suddenly. There is no escape.

There is a medical test which can tell you if you have the disease. The test is 99% accurate, whether you have the disease or not.

Of course, you want to know, so you take the test.

The result comes back POSITIVE (oh noes!)

What is the actual percentage chance that you have the disease?
Logical and moral paradoxes are much more entertaining. The key to this one is "whether you have the disease or not" ;)

It's best to avoid the carve tool when you're just starting out. It's a great tool but needs to be used in the right way, and it's easy at first to get into very bad habits with it.

Build rooms yourself rather than hollowing them out of cubes. Make the floor. Then each wall. Then stick a ceiling on top. It works out much better in the end.

I've made an example map for you. You can find it at the link below. There are no textures in it, just solids.

http://rapidshare.com/files/36316035/room_and_door.zip.html

Personally, I don't use hollow at all. The way it creates the walls is pretty bad.

Penguinboy's sweeping generalisation about carving is wrong. Carving can be very useful and save you a bit of time, but you have to be very careful to make sure that when you carve something, it only creates 90 degree angles. If you try to carve something like a cylinder, you're going to end up with very messy, and possibly unusable, brushwork. So, if you're cutting a square doorway through a flat, square wall, then carving is fine. That's what I did in the example map. If you're doing anything more complex than that, then you're better off working out how to build the required shapes yourself.

128 units is a good general height for walls.

I like to make my 'average' doorways 56 units wide and 96 units high. The player is 72 units tall and 32 units wide (if I remember correctly) and 48 tall when crouching.

So, look at that example map (it's incredibly simple) and practise by copying and pasting a few copies of the rooms nearby, and try joining them up with corridors and rooms of your own. You should learn a few things from that.

Nein they can't just stop support for XP
Oh yes they can. XP Home is no longer supported. XP Pro is still supported for now, because of its widespread business use, but its retirement has already been announced. From the horses mouth:-

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-ca&C2=1173&x=12&y=12

And an article on it.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39246991,00.htm
support for Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Centre Edition would end on 31 December, 2006.
Windows XP Professional, because it is a business product, will get "extended support" for five additional years following the expiration of mainstream support, which will come two years after Vista's debut
What do you think extended support means? ;)

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/#Extended Support

(you might need to copy and paste that link sorry)
The Extended Support phase follows Mainstream Support for Business and Developer products.
At the supported service pack level, Extended Support includes:

Paid support
Security update support at no additional cost
Non-security related hotfix support requires a separate Extended Hotfix Support Agreement to be purchased (per-fix fees also apply)

Please note:
Microsoft will not accept requests for warranty support, design changes, or new features during the Extended Support phase
Extended Support is not available for Consumer, Hardware, Multimedia, and Microsoft Dynamics products
Enjoy the Microsoft future!
So what exactly happens after rebooting the PC?
Well it still boots. But the problem with playing video doesn't go away. I've tried quite a bit, short of re-installing (which is tricky to find time to do to my own pc at work) to fix it, but no luck so far.

Basically, Nero chucks up about 50 errors every time you play a video. You have to click OK on them all. Then the video plays, but sometimes it happens in the middle of videos too.

Uninstalling it doesn't help. I think this might be because MS licenced Nero's software for the inbuilt DVD/CD burning in Vista (and XP too, but its less capable in XP) and they might have a problem with each other.

Still working on fixing it though, so don't know really, yet.

I use Vista at work. I have to get accustomed to it so that when the University switches over, I know how to help all the confused academics.

I wouldn't have it at home.

The fact that MS is almost actively blocking people from using OpenGL is awful.

The User Account Control thing (or whatever it's called, I turned it off after about 8 seconds) is possibly the most annoying thing in the history of the Earth. Good theory - bad implementation.

Some of the DRM features are horrific, even to one who does not pirate at all (anymore)

The system load, especially memory usage, is disgusting. Even at idle. Vista reserves all of your memory for itself as soon as it boots up. All your memory truly are belong to Vista.

It has a fantastic bug that sometimes makes copying files across a network take hours rather than seconds. It's almost even funny, because all of the delay is actually caused by bug in the code which calculates the time remaining. This bug has been christened "The Long Goodbye" by the tech community.

If you have a decent graphics card and a bucket full of RAM, then Vista does look pretty, in my opinion. But the changes are in no way practically useful. Only better looking.

Lots of software simply doesn't like it. For example, DO NOT install Nero Burning ROM unless you've got the very latest new version. Just trust me. You will hate yourself if you do. It doesn't just fail and quit....oh no. Try playing some videos after the installation fails. Then reboot your PC and try again. Yessssssss.........

And did you know Windows Vienna is scheduled to come out in 2009? That's before official support for XP ends.

It's probably not actually frozen.

It's just very, very slow.

This generally means your map needs optimizing. Read up on what VIS actually does, and learn how to build your maps to make its life easier.

Heres' some info you might find useful.

And this is a very good general guide to optimization.

I kinda agree. Farcry's story is a bit dumb.

But I think the AI is absolutely fantastic on the 'realistic' difficulty setting. And good artificial AI is far harder to get right than a storyline.

I really did enjoy finishing the game on realistic.

But I wouldn't do it all again.

That's where HL2 wins. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Farcry the first time. But I can replay it again and again, and still enjoy it as much as the first time.

Thats part of the reason why I map for HL2, and not Farcry, even though Crytek's engine is damn pretty.

It was advertised on Steam Update News a little while back, and I gave it a go:-

http://www.zombiemaster.org/about.php

It's still in beta, but I have the feeling Valve might snap this one up before it becomes finished.

It's really, really good. Potentially, it's massive. Even now it's hard to get into servers - simply because they're all constantly packed full. It's got a few bugs and is sometimes horribly laggy.

Basically, there's an objective based map. Probably the first time you play, you'll play the docks where all the players (except one) have to find the parts for and re-assemble a truck to escape. Like CS, when you're dead, you're dead for the round, and there is no health lying around.

One player is chosen at random at the start of each game to be the "Zombie Master" and that person plays the whole round like a RTS game, such as Command and Conquer.

Being Zombie Master is confusing at first, but it's a lot of fun when you get it worked out.

Anyway, the link above will tell you all you need to know. I recommend that you have a go!

I was lucky enough to grab a fleeting space on one of the official servers where the dev team were playing. It was interesting - they were much better than me tho :P

Try starting a new map, and saving it after making one brush -- somewhere out of the way.

Then copy and paste the entire contents of the problem map into the new one.

Then delete the brush you made at first, and save the file again.
