It's ok, the new punishment for saying you'll submit and entry and not doing so is 12 failure points, so be warned! = ) (we should keep a running total on a shame board of fail points! =D)

Muzz: Seems like an excellent compo, but i'm swamped for time atm. If i get some free-time, i'll try to work up something in source as a my first Source Level! = )

I guess #10 - Remake a door is done. Out of the entries i think Muzz's is the clear winner, and i guess i get second since Daubster never submitted his very-beautifully-constructed door (pictured in a screenshot above).

If you guys want to do an 11th geometry challenge, I'm in, but Muzz has first dibs on choosing the next one. I might submit a source entry since i have a source capable machine now. = )

32-bit programs run fine on 64-bit Windows.
Well i hope you're right but i tried installing Firefox as my very first application and it wouldn't even start the installation process. I downloaded Minefied (64-bit firefox) and it works fine tho.

I'll give a complete list of working/nonworking programs in a week or so in case anyone cares. If too much stuff that i like to use doesn't work, i'm taking this thing back and getting the other computer probably.

Help pleez! = o

I'm looking at buying this computer with ddr3 memory. I love the specs--nvidia 9800m gts, 17" with 1920x1200 res, 7200 200GB HDD, 1066MHz frontside bus, 3MB L2 cache and 2.26 core 2 duo--but i'm afraid about backward compatibility with my old games, and many 3rd-party progams--not least of which goldsource editing tools. Also i wanted to downgrade to windows xp professional which i'm told is impossible on this machine because of the ddr3 memory.

As an alternative, i'm considering this machine for 50 dollars less, which i'm fairly sure i can downgrade to xp (it only has 3GB of ddr2). It comes with a slightly less-powerful 9700m gts, 2.0ghz P7350 core 2 duo, 1066MHz system bus, and 3MB L2 cache. I have many dislikes about this machine though:
-makes my top-five list for ugliest notebook chassis of all time.
-15.4 screen and no number pad
-5400 speed HDD
-max resolution is only 1440 x 900 (which is gay)
The worst part is this is a substantially weaker machine for almost the same money, which kills me. If i'm spending this kind of money i want it to be perfect... and it isn't.

So any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm 90% positive i'm buying one or the other because i need a new computer now, i just would really appreciate some help deciding which one.

(inb4 everyone says don't buy a laptop and comments about Best Buy)

If Vista indeed is the problem you could downgrade to windows xp, you just need to hunt for your device drivers. (if you bought a premade computer, their website might have the xp drivers for you) The only remaining problem would be finding a copy of xp since they don't sell it any longer afaik.

And btw can i ask you if your hammer 3.x works ok in vista? (i'm buying a new computer soon and am wondering...)

I think there should be comments for the competition page entries (for winners or all entries, or at the very least, a general comment section for the whole compo? (i guess the competition thread covers the last one))

Award links in your profile should probably link to that competition's results?

Works great for me.

I'm experimenting with domes right now. (next i'm guna see how they "like" being VMed...)

They're error free and look pretty good, and one thing i've noticed is that tha domes are almost paper thin--which is pretty cool and hard to achieve in hammer--, which could be good or bad, depending on your application. Is there a way to make them thicker? Is that what the power button does or what does it do?

Anyway, cool stuff Penguinboy, and thanks for not forgetting us Goldsource gypsies. (might base a geometry compo using twister in the future, could be cool!)

I'm looking at new computers too. For video cards i'd like to get the nvida 8800m or the 9700m series cards. I agree with most people that these type of cards are more that sufficient for most games.

Some laptops i'm looking at with these cards have a 600Mhz FSB and some have an 800. Is there quite a performance increase with the faster bus?

Most core 2 duo processors i'm looking at with these machines are only about 2Ghz though, and though i want a faster processor, they are substanially more expensive... Is this speed range processor going be a huge hit to the gaming does anyone know?

well like I said, you don't have to worry about your textures lining up it if the door starts in the "closed" postion, do you? :P

The problem comes if the door is starting open; after the rotating door stops, the textures are at an odd angle, and don't line up with second, straight moving door, ya know?

Any ideas for that problem?

(btw here's a slightly updated version of my door minus the rendering errors:

Half-life Genius: It makes no difference to me! People will vote for the map they like the best. Muzz is right using SOHL is less challenging, but who cares?.. go for it! I'd love to see another interpretation of the door, regardless. = D

Muzz: Ya my door works exactly the same way, except mine started open, and i didn't use a teleport. It's also set to passable. (For an actual game, i'd make a blue door rendered invisble to act as the actual barrier)

what i really want to know is how you "hide" the rendering from one door to another; i can always see the change in the angle of the texture when the rendering off/on happens.

If you're starting with an open door, how do you make everthing line up? a closed door is simple because everthing is already lined up before the rotation begins)

Whoa Daub... tis sex! = )

Hey btw i figured out the problem why my entry was rednering weird. it was nothing wrong with the geometry, but my mistake was for the env_render when making each door "appear", i made it texture, 255, when it should have just been rendered normally, or normal, 255. I guess i din't know solids rendered texture/255 were not totally solid-looking for every angle! = P

Muzz: after the compo is over you might share some of your seekrits, though i think you might have a problem lining up the textures in the "rotating" door, transitioning to the "straight-moving" door, if you had to start with the door open? (maybe not, but i can't think of a way to do it unless you mono textured the door, but even then...)
Anyway, great entries so far. Anyone else gonna join in?! = P

hi! = )

Write some suggestions of things you like about SP maps you've played, things you routinely see that you DON'T like, or some general ideas you can think of to make SP maps more fun to play.
I've found routinely playing SP maps lately i've noticed a couple things:

-Even though some maps have an ENORMOUS amount of professional work put into them, i find myself REALLY bored and not wanting to play it through. What are these highly skilled pieces of work missing?!

-I played a mode recently that had little sprites showing you where to go next, which i though was pretty awesome, as i get frustrated easily figuring out puzzles. Maybe a variation of that like an "easy" button to show you the way might be cool if a certain puzzle is pissing you off too much.

-I hate complicated jumping puzzles and have no time for them. noclip turn on.
