--UPDATE--
Got a note from Kachito with a free Apocolyptic Mayhem key. Never heard of the game before but it looks like a lot of fun. It's kinda like Twisted Metal with more racing elements to it. He offered it to be in the prize pool. Not sure how to reorganize the prizes yet but I'll get back to you on that when I think of something.

If you guys want more to look at, check out the following links.
Proteus
Fez
Hyper Light Drifter
Journey
Outland
Guacamelee
General color palettes

I'm sure there are ton more games but that's all I could think of.
Hope this gets more people inspired :3

If you want to make a deathmatch map, I don't see why not. If you want to port your map to other mods like counterstrike or whatever, just make sure it's at least viewable in HL or make an compo entry version. Remind you, we're not judging gameplay either. This is almost entirely a style competition.

That flatshade map is really awesome. I didn't actually think people styled maps like this. I was inspired by an old class assignment and the assortment of markers on my desk.

Either way, it good to see that there are examples so people can ease into it a little better.

Creativity is paramount in this one.

Custom sound is custom content. It's not allowed. You can use vanilla sounds if they apply, but we're not judging on sound. The rules are a little different on this one, I know. Normally compo maps are judged with everything taken into consideration, but not this one.

It'll stay unless everyone later votes to stop and begin judging. If people are finished and just waiting for the timer to run up, we'll cut it short.

Competition type: Map using a set of textures
Engine: Source & Goldsource
Game: HL/HL2 Singleplayer (base game, no mods)
Assets: colors.wad, Source VTF's/VMT's
Deadline: August 22
Judges: The Mighty Atom, Rimrook

In this mini competition, you will need to use your sense of color and construction to bring an environment to life. You are allowed to use only the textures in the wad but don't worry, there are 90 colors to choose from all across the rainbow.

Allowable vanilla assets include monsters, weapons, pickups, HEV, etc. Is allowable. Sprites, beams, and other env_entities are allowed. Tool textures from ZHLT.wad an VHLT.wad are also allowed.

Prohibited vanilla assets include skyboxes or using the SKY texture. Use a color to define your sky.

Understand it well enough? Now here's the twist!
Your map must be fullbright! Yes fullbright so throw your lighting out the window. This doesn't mean you don't run the RAD compile, but instead enter -ambient 255 255 255 in RAD's command line to fullbright your map. You can also add -nodynbounce and -bounce 0 to save some calculation and speed up RAD. If you have any questions, ask. Not running RAD makes the map lag terribly.

The naming convention for your map file should be mc2_[yourname].bsp so we can easily sort through them. If we can't play your map, we can't judge your map. We will not chase down authors so make sure your map works.

Judging will be based on your clever use of design, color choices, theme, and mood. All other aspects should be used to enhance either of these four elements.

There will only be 2 winners and 2 prizes.
The first place winner will receive a free Minecraft code provided by Atom.
The second place winner will receive a free full color poster commission of their own design by me. I do print artwork all day everyday and that's how I pay my rent, this is a rare opportunity.

Here is the wad for GoldSource:
Colors.wad

And here are the VTF's and VMT's for Source:
Source VTF's & VMT's

Source mappers: extract the contents of the zip file to the materials folder.

Good luck, and have fun!

The rule is actually a little fuzzy...
you may NOT change the geometry/brushwork, however, you are allowed to cut into existing geometry if you want to add a window, a trim or whatever, as long as the walls you're cutting into are not exposed to the void.
A window that may lead to a skybox, or an untraversable section of the map that is only scenic? I had no problems seeing into new areas as long as the playable area didn't actually go beyond that. What I did have a minor qualm about was in CT's map where he added that small tunnel underneath that lead into the bottom of the house section of the base. The area could be explored and was annexed to the base. It could have been easily solved by blocking it off. I think it's been stated in base compos before that the basemap sorta defines a broad playable area, rather than set the exact confines of the map.

I won't make any of my own judgements since the compo is over. Though I gotta ask Cap'n Terror what he had in mind. His was entered unfinished right? Gotta admit those capsule ship things were pretty awesome.

EDIT: Is another mini compo going to pop up here or what? This actually had a little turnout.

Interesting fact that's weird about Hammer. If you use things that are in powers of 6, like six sided things, the vertexes will always be on grid.

Tetrahedron geometry does sorta fail. We should revisit why we considered it in the first place for stuff. Maybe we can actually figure something useful out.

So its pretty similar, that's nice to know. The flying aspect sounds crazy. A big warehouse and tunnels would be a sort of nightmare to find and kill a bunch of birds. I recommend shotguns for it.

So, who wants to test the bird hunt idea, would be my next question?

Well it looks like coding would clean up a few things. That's all on you guys if you want to do that. If you are going to do coding, would you code spirit or vanilla?

I reverted my w_security back to the card and found that something smaller would require more looking rather than seeing a big obvious icon and grabbing it. My thoughts for this is to provoke true searching. Running through the environment, you should see nearly nothing. It's when you start opening cabinets or drawers, looking under and between things that would begin to find things. That was the appeal of the cockroaches in the first place being so tiny. Scavenging for a tiny little security card requires that you try and search for it, and you won't find it until you're basically on top of it. That's my philosophy at least, and it doesn't have to apply to everyone, or to the general design of this project. Of course, a map would be an example, and I'm sorta working on one.

The reason I said vanilla assets was because I'm putting all of my custom content energy into Zeeba and I's map. Again, that doesn't have to apply to anything, but Black Mesa themed stuff just makes sense.

Custom code is a step too far and unnecessary for our means. Though if we seriously, like, fucking why so serious seriously, then we make a mod of it and really stick to the theme and make a huge effort to make something interesting for people to play.

Fixed rats (perhaps fixed cockroaches too) would be the biggest thing. I noticed in their QC that their dying animation is looped, and it shouldn't be. I can fix that much and redo the hitboxes and IDs.

Dimbark brought up Viscera Cleanup Detail. I gave it a try and I'm addicted. Some of this reminds me of that.

EDIT: Does anyone else think rats should run away from the player like scientists do when they're afraid? Would be an interesting part of the hunting experience, especially if they had a significantly different set of passages from the player.

I made a lambda coin to use, it doesn't seem to really work well as a w_security, it wouldn't play its spinning animation. Same thing happens as the cycler_weapon but it acts more like a custom item pickup, and the model can be set to anything.

EDIT: omg fuckin goldsource man. if you pick up a cycler_weapon, you can't pick up another one. I guess it's back to the security cards then. Better than nothing and with a bit of finesse, they'll work.

Funny how hard it is to do something this simple. >:[

ZHLT.wad should be permitted simply because they are used for optimization.

Minecraft is a fun game if you're really into the theme of it. If you're not, there are only a billion mods for it. My favorite right now is Pixelmon. Completely overhauled the game and made it something new.

To continue this discussion officially from this journal.

It's beginning to look like a mod or map pack that is based around finding, killing all of, or collecting whatever within a detailed and exploratory environment.

Some of the ideas which arose so far are:
Headcrab Hunt
Rat Hunt
Zombie Hunt
Collect the Keycards or "Red Coins"
Probably more if Source gets involved.

Whether Spirit of HL needs to get involved is a matter of how far you want to take the idea. Personally I don't see a need for it unless someone really makes a breakthrough map that requires it.

I'm going to attempt to make some kind of rat-grenade map because that sounds ludicrous and fun. Don't let me stop you if you want to do the same thing. I also like the idea of collecting "Red Coins" and having to scavenge for 20 of those in a map.

Continue thinking, this will only fail if we give up on it.
