Umm..
You don't need Steam to map.
You don't have to use Hammer, as Quark now offers support.
You didn't have to buy a new graphics card to play Sven Coop.
You didn't have to download HL2.. all you had to do was choose not to update.
Steam crashed your 'face' PC... Ok, how? and just how 'face' is it?
Why would you want to touch worldcraft... know one else has in the last 3 or 4 years...

There was a basic build a map tutorial that came with Worldcraft 2.
That is how I learnt to map...
Built a room, built another room... connected it with a corridor.

The rest is in your head.

Don't agree,
I run Steam and haven't had any problems that couldn't be sovled with the normal use of google and the Steam Support page.
My connection is 128k ISDN.
I wouldn't want to do it with a 56k Modem, and that is the only thing I see against it.

Guy's
The thing that will bring this undone is changing direction/ideas/format.

Stick to the original plan.

I really liked anon's suggestion, (Umm, tried something like that once before) but the thing that is brilliant about the MIX is that everyone get's to see the previous room and can learn from that.
Ok, so that is unfortunate for the builders of the first rooms, but I am sure they learned heaps anyway.

Umm.. This isn't a change in structure, just line-up...
Why don't you get the most talented mappers to start the MIX off??
That way everyone get's some benifit.

TWHLmix proved the theory when you played it.
Things got better the deeper you went into the map.

Do not lose sight of what you are trying to do.
Best of luck.

Wrong forum as you all know,
However, the bug has been fixed, or atleast a fix has been found.
The outcry in the FY community was huge. The all howled and hollered.

One witty person suggeested that it might be because Valve always considered FY mapping to be the lowest form of art...
I would agree with that, but it goes against my policy of:
"As long as it is fun, then it is Ok".

Gentlemen.. and the Ladies amongst you.. calm down.
As far as I am aware, Atom said:
And we can also now track IPs, so a site-wide ban is just a click away. Muhahahahahahah.
Whilst there is a sinister laugh at the end of this post, it does not imply that he is going to start banning people just for the fun of it. (That isn't his style)
Also, there is no mention of who actually has the ability to ban!

So before you get too worked up,
I am guessing that a site wide ban would be applicable if the person banned, posted something or did something that was deemed unfit for this site.
This is completely different to a person being a consistant pain.

Ocassionally, in personal messages to members, I indicate my preferences as to who should be 'taken round the back of the hanger and thoroughly beaten with a sensible stick', however this in no way implies I have the power to ban people, nor does it mean I would actually ban them if I had the ability.

Some of you piss me off.
That is life, it is my problem, and I am sure I will get over it.

As for Anonymous,
Well... they are a registered member. There will be only one of them now and you might as well get used to it.
usually those faces are taken away by VIS.
Posted on 03 Jan 05 11:16 by ministeve
Yep, that seems to be the case... but so many level designers continued to 'null' unseen faces that I tested it out.

Conclusion?
Doesn't seem to make a difference. But that does not mean it doesn't.
Effectively the unseen textures are pre-stripped by 'null'ing them.

Anyway, I am sure that if 'Urbanrider' get's some new tools, most of the problems will go away.

in Hi can't run my maps HELP!! Post #81227
SariBous is right.
First up, get new compiling tools:
Slackiller's HL Programs
Every thing you need to map with Hammer 3.4 is archived here!

Begin to understand an error log.
********** ERROR **********
nummarkfaces == MAX_LEAF_FACES
Every time you get one of these, the answer is normally available at:
Tommy14's Error Reference
It also pays to understand ZHLT's Reference and Problems.
You will find a link at the bottom of this page:
HL Links

As for the .wad files, remove:
pldecal.wad
cached.wad
fonts.wad
gfx.wad

They are not required for the mapping you are doing.

Load up the new compiling tools before you try to fix the errors.

in Valve's Second Mistake Post #80692
I was going to reply to this post a few days ago, but... well data base errors and so on.

Anyway, what I was going to say is that I doubt whether Valve's first mistake was Steam?
The more I think of it from a business point of view, the more I like the product.
No doubt Valve have made a lot of mistakes along the way.. some of them nearly catastrophic, like not having sufficient security to stop the source being stolen.
But think back people...
I think Valves biggest mistake as a corporation was the choice of it's initial distribution partners.
Their biggest win was owning the product and not working for another company.

Valve don't owe you anything, you are not doing them any favours. They already have your money!!
As a customer, you have rights... but read the fine print.
Read some of the Legal stuff on the Steam site..
Basically, just because you bought the product doesn't mean it is going to work...
Ok, so that sucks, but that's life.

Thinking about my experience with Steam and HL2 products, I would say that their biggest mistake was allowing Boneheads to moderate their support forums.

Recent example is that they have disabled the search engine due to database bloat (more likely a security problem?). One poster asked why they couldn't search anymore.
The answer was "What would you want to search for anyway".
The poster replied, " Ok, I will just post a new thread everytime i need to ask something... your problem not mine, and if you think you have bloat now then wait a few weeks"
I am sure he wanted to add... Wanker.

PS:
I like being a non 1337 tellytubby, they are fun!
