It's a leak.

In other words -- a hole in your map which leads from the inside to the outside.

Close up the hole, and you'll be fine.

You can load the pointfile that the compile process generated in Hammer, and it will draw a line in the views which shows you where the leak is.

From the above compile log excerpt, it looks like you have multiple leaks.

So the sound is forwards, but just the echo itself is reversed? IE the echo plays before the sound, and not after?

How about reversing the sample, then adding echo to it, and then reversing it again? That way the echo would be in front instead of behind.

Well, I would try this:

1. Make 2 copies of your sample, we'll call them A and B
2. Add echo to A
3. Reverse A - this makes C
4. Mix B with C

Does that do what you want?

It's not as simple as it looks. Thankfully - the VMF of the map where the Alyx rescue scene happens is included with the SDK.

I worked it out by looking in there. Look for an entity called "blackout" in that map, and you should be able to work it out from there.

You have to use an invisible model, which is a bit of a pain because you can't see it in the 3D view -- you can only get to it by finding another entity which has an output or input relating to it, and selecting it that way.

If you really want discussion on this matter, open your dialogue to criticism, and address that criticism in a calm and scientific manner, instead of just shouting "You're wrong!" over and over again.

If you're going to lean on science to support you, then you have to support it too.

Otherwise, you just look like you've got your head up your arse.

I'm not saying you do have your head up your arse, in reality.

But that's how you present yourself here.

It's not -- as long as you keep your works to yourself.

Technically, it can become illegal though. I'll explain -

For example - you make a CS 1.6 map using CS:Source Textures which you converted. You then release your map.

Someone who doesn't own CS:Source then downloads your map -- you just gave them some textures they didn't pay for.

Then it's illegal.

Can't see you going to court over it though, unless you're somehow profiting from it.

I liked DKII. I finished it once, but never played it again after that.

But I liked DKI a LOT more, even though it didn't look as good and the multiplayer is buggy, it's still a much better game I think. I still play DKI fairly regularly.

If you like DKII, you'll probably like Evil Genius too. The premise of Evil Genius is a bit different, but it plays in a very similar way. Check it out. It's awesome.

That looks to me like there are lots of leaks, and hammer is pointing them all out at once. But that's confusing.

Did the old Hammer do that ?? It's been so long since I used anything except Hammer4, that I just can't remember.

The map you uploaded DOES have a leak. You can tell without even opening the map because there is a LIN file present. The LIN file is created by Hammer, in response to a leak being found during compile.

There is an option in hammer to "load pointfile" which will point out to you where the leak is.

Use this option, and load the LIN file. This will show you where the leak is.

Leaks can cause all sorts of problems. It is possible that the leak is the ENTIRE cause of your problem.

Yes, there are limits.

The beauty of the Half Life engine(s) is that they can make a lot out of very little. You don't need a bazillion brushes to make things look complex. It's all about scale, proportion, and good texturing.

The large maps like assault etc, that you mentioned are possible when a mapper understands how to make interesting-looking-stuff while still remaining within the limits of the engine. Learning what the engine can and cannot do is half of the battle when you're learning to map.

You simply must have gone overboard with something on your map.

Throwing more memory at your particular problem might cure it, it might not. As I know nothing of your map itself, I can't be sure. But even if more ram did fix it, you'd be treating a symptom, and not the cause of the real problem.

AllocBlock full - literally means

You're running out of memory

So, essentually what you need to do is makes changes which will cause your map compile to use less memory.

You could try scaling up some textures in your map, or make your map smaller. Or simplify some of your geometry, if you have very complex stuff in there. This can all help.

You could also try compiling with a batch compiler like "Nems Batch Compiler" (which I use) - this allows you to compile maps without having Steam running, which frees up some memory. So this could help too.

Dave's advice above is sound. :)

Although -- hardware is fickle. I've seen PC's which are filthier inside than you can probably even imagine (ever worked on a PC which has been on a landfill site for 5 years?) last beyond any reasonable expectation. And I've seen PC's in clean rooms with state-of-the-art everything fail after 20 minutes.
