So far the new system is working to my expectations. I have been playing a LOT of Arma 2, even got a server on there :)

I had bought it hours before posting this LOL. This computer supposedly was just out a few months ago, and the graphics (in my opinion) are good, considering what I had last was a nVidia 6150 on-board.

So some reasons I have not been present lately...

Lately I have been dealing with some health issues. It has mostly been my stomach landing me in the ER every 2-3 weeks. Managable at times, so it's been a slow crawl towards stabilizing that.

But then this past weekend, all hell broke loose ABOVE the shoulders... A distortion-turned-blind spot developed in what I call my GOOD eye (right eye blind central vision since birth).

Paniced and went to the Emergency Room, only to discover it was a good thing I went... retina detachments in BOTH EYES!

As it stands, 8 hours from the time this post started I will be going through some surgery to repair the damage. It's not clear what causes it, but it is clear what they have to do. And of all the surgeries I have ever had in my life, including a left-below-knee amputation, THIS one in 8 hours scares me the most.

Please say a prayer that I come out of the operating room with the same thing I went in with.... MY EYESIGHT! (perhaps slightly improved?)

I'll be mapping again soon. I promise you that! Been itching to make a deathmatch or even gmod map.

Okay, so I have the wireless router configured properly, I'm running a 150 Mbps connection on the wireless, I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit...

these are all factors which have worked before. I moved, same internet provider & speed, using the EXACT same router.

I enter my password, and

"could not connect to steam network. This could be due to a problem with your internet connection, or with the steam network."

EXACTLY HOW? Cuz I can connect to Curse Client for WoW, to WoW itself, SecondLife even works. But now Steam wont.

PLEASE HELP?

If I could also bump this into a Hammer question...

I am working on practicing different capabilities.

I have a room, with Alyx, and 8 "path corner" nodes... (path-path7)

I have "path" designated as Alyx's target path_corner. I have Alyx named "alyx", and for some reason when I compile and run the map, she aint walking.

(EDITED)

I only assume any responses are autmatically posted on the front page even after editing.... I figured it out, the path's were half embedded in the floor

Okay the reason for this post is simple... My mapping skills SUCK!

All of the maps I have ever created are hollowed out blocks, connected hallways, bad lighting and texturing. Playing HL as long as I have, and downloading diff maps and such, by now you would think I would be good at it.

Today while in hammer, I opened a decompiled GMOD map (I dont steal peoples work, but its nice to see how people do stuff ya know?) gm_construct.

Studying the structures near the spawnpoint got me thinking, and have me puzzled. All these years I have been trying to figure otu how to make windows and doors without having a LOT of brushes making up one panel. All this talk about "poly count" I guess had me concerned about lag and such.

Texturing is also an issue. the more "brushes" that make up a wall, the less I'm able to have the texture blend right in.

Dont ask me what i'm asking for by posting this, but its not ,making me want to make a REALLY good map of some type. Something that I can be very proud of.

I purchased 2 games through steam that apparently wont run on my system, primarily for video reasons.

So I am thinking of getting a PCI-E video card...

The games are GTA: IV, and Breach.

Now considering I am not very tech savvy when it comes to video cards and such, and despite any "research" I tried to do, I am askking here because it seems there are quite a few people here who know what would work and wwhat wouldnt.

Penguin, that's Camtasia Studio.

I select the engine version you stated, but where do I find the automatic Portal config? I dont see that in the SDK Launcher window

EDIT 1: Well, I "added" a game config under that orange box engine, reset game configs, and so far Hammer opens normal views. I'm gonna make a scrap map and see what happens.

Edit 2: Rabid, you are a sanity saver. My lil trick worked, although item_suit has that checkered texture to iy, I guess there is no suit in portal.

I'm looking to create "props" like Trapt called them. For those who havent played GMOD each object is called a prop. I want to create props which can be used for several things..... bowling pins and stuff like that, various building block types and sizes (yes I know they have Phoenix, but there are things I want to use which arent created as being LOW LAG)

I will check out all the suggestions I've seen so far. Blender seems to be mentioned in many places.

Ninja, mastering isnt exactly my ultimate goal. I just want to know the basics and play arund from there. Being home a lot makes me bored and restless, so I try to challenge myself to something new whenever possible (watch for my gen discussion thread here in a few)

Well that's freakin relief LOL!

Seriously it is. After my 1st rant months ago I should have known not to bother, but I guess because of their dedicated gmod section, I figured it was a good place to learn that particular mod (and no I'm not throwing a hint LOL my post to y'all does that itself penguin)

All I can say is, facepunch is named correctly, cuz being punched in the face is a lot less painful than being there as a member.

EDITED: Oh get this one, I cleared my cookies and went back onto facepunch's main page..... this is proof that they are as ignorant as they are subtarded.....
We don't have a rules list, but just use your common sense. If in doubt, don't post, just observe what other people do.

This is the same thing I got bumped for on FP (okay I'll drop it LOL)

I want to create models for HL2 based stuff...... specifically gmod.

I dont have money right now, so I have to rely on free (or at least 30-day trial) software, although 30-day trials usually either disable saving or have some lil watermark on everything.

What would work really well?

And sorry to combine posts, but also, if I can ask where can I find a batch compiler? They seem to work better on my slower system

Srry, you have always had a problem with me anyway.

Fair nuff though, only reason I havent been around is discouragement. For as long as I have had Half-Life and the games that followed, my mapping skills have been terrible, my ability to play Counter Strike, and CS:S is basically that of a 12 year old running into a bank yelling "this is a stick on!" with a water pistol (in other words I cant shoot for sh**)

And I guess I just havent been able to find common ground with many people here.

I now realize that isnt entirely true.

So in your standards, how long does someone have to be here to volunteer his time for free? How many of the "members" have a full or part time job srry? Me, I'm handicapped (amputee) and I have no job to speak of so I have plenty of time to contribute into things.

Well it would seem that the old days of being banned for spelling errors and grammatical shortcuts are long gone at facepunch studios, now known as facepunch.com.

And as you now see people typing "lawlz" and "rofil" and not getting banned for it, they seemed to have been struck by boredom and are now MANUALLY banning people for more than 24 hours at a time for the simplest of mistakes. From posting your question in the wrong section, all the way to asking the responder for clarification on something they said in their answer.

As much as I like facepunch because of the vast flow of information pertaining to Garry's Mod, I am afraid that my recent rants CONCERNING my latest ban has now awarded me a permaban. Why? because I told them in vivid detail exactly where they can place their forum board system.

Had they not banned me for 24 hours a couple days ago, and then banned me again not even 24 hours after THAT was lifted, I would have behaved like a good little gmod n00b that they all want us to be.

Now I realize that there is a possibility I may get banned from HERE for posting THIS thread. Before you have a seizure on the banhammer button, allow me tell you that I have no intention of bringing any trouble here. I have been a member for quite a while, and as much as I have disappeared lately, I do now intend on coming back here more often. After all, I am no longer permitted where the information is that I seek.

Now I'll post something somewhere else here, this time not in rant format.

I propose an addition of GMOD content. I realize that it may not be as popular here, but it could very well become popular given the right amount of moderation.

I'd also like to ask if I could contribute to helping to the site, yes, becoming a MOD is what i would like. I've been a member here for a while, and I have admin'd my own forums in teh past, as well as other sites forum systems.

Please give it some thought, I'm obviously not going anywhere now (please see my rant about facefu, er, facepunch LOL)

I have SMOD, a Source Mod for HL2, decided to make a test map.

I saved the .VMF here...

\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\smodredux\maps

Now, I assumed it would put the .BSP in

\Steam\steamapps\-snip-\half-life 2\hl2\maps

It did, but when I went to move the file to the 1st referred dir, it said there was a bsp already there.

Is that normal for Hammer to save a BSP wherever you save the VMF?

I am making a version of flatgrass from scratch....

Same X & Y size as flatgrass, Z size is about 1024 shorter.
16 info_player_start's dead center on the ground piece
1 light_environment dead center of it all in the air
2 fence-textured brushes in one corner to designate a "deathmatch" area

Several brushes in opposite corner (prop_dynamic) as a jail (for NewAdmin Purposes)

5 "skybox" brushes making up the cube for the outer edges of the map.

I start compiling with all settings on normal (bsp, vis, rad)

It gets stuck on "Portal Flow"...

1....2....3....4....5.. <---- that's how far it gets and then it freezes.
