hmmmm i recommend not using vtex.
use nem's VTFEdit

i use nem everything :) i recommend you look around the site and get other stuff too

anyway vtfedit lets you create form images, and you select tons of flags and you can create your vmt files with options too etc.

besides hl GOTY is AU$15, which is about $10 US but since aust has a markup of about 100% its prob $5 in US lol. and thats no p&h also
and thats all the games
on the other hand buy the ultra mega premium pack when afterma.......i mean "half-life 2: episode 1" comes out if you dont have hl2

HDR is nescessary if ur a source mapper - otherwise you cant test it! lol. get a good card so when/if you get a new monitor it'll be good.

if you dont wanna upgarde to pci-e get the best agp vid card that will ever exist - the 7800GS
the 6600gt is almost the same as the 6800 except cheaper - i dont know id the 6800 ultra is AGP but you definately need a 6600 or higher. shop around the e-tailers
me, im gunna upgrade - i want a 64 bit cpu so i need to get new m/b, vid, cpu, and SATA hdd's ......expensive >_<

firstly, DONT GET A 6200!!! they really REALLY suck!!
5200 doesnt support hdr
i have a 6600gt and it works awsomely (bf2 @ high quality 1280x1024)
and hl2 full hdr, water reflections, etc. 1024x768
nowadays, 6600gt is considered one of the lowest dx9 standard
ati might play hl2 ever-so-slightly better, but the 6600gt is better overall.
get a 6600gt.

your all wrong!
1. make surf map (ramp watever)
2. compile and run in your own server
3. CONSOLE (~)
type in:
sv_airaccelerate 100
4. surf!

thats how you do it for cs 1.6 anyway im sure its the same
anyways try it - it cant hurt.

this is for the 'im sliding of the ramp for no reason wtf' problem (official name)

btw a brush is a block of watever. a ramp is a triangular prism which is a brush.

@fearian: hehe that is the best page - i found it a year or so back and twice ive had to refind to bcause of url changes.

anyway my hl2 mod is episodic (before valve did the same thing!) and it will be everything from the hl1 incident to the start of hl2
episode 1 is escape from bmesa by barney
and i want to try and get the 7 hr war lasting 7 hrs

  • try -
putting the compile tools into the same drive as your map save files
i.e.
compile tools in, say, S:compile tools
RMF's in, S:maps
and BSP's in S:counter-strikecstrikemaps

and also make sure your options and paths are aet up properly

now with HDR - high demand rendering - the really really big resource muncher! buy a $700 video card today and another one next year when the first becomes obsolete!

find your .rmf - it has to be there somewhere (if ur desprate search your c (or watever) drive for *.rmf ) and open that - rmf files are like hammer-only files that open in hammer exactly like a map file except faster with less errors and lets use some extra features that an .rmf would remember the settings for and a .map wouldnt. if your familar with photoshop its like an .rmf is a .psd file which retains its levels and a .map file is a .jpg where its flattened out.

yes, but first you make the old map almost exactly the same, and then add the new stuff. e.g. instead of brush based cliffs use dispacements

ok, i've been mapping for a while now, and the time has come for me to add some finishing touches to a few of my maps. so i've been using overlays (which are awsome) but i find them a bit limiting.
questions:
1. can you ajust the texture scale of overlays without resizing and how?
2. can you resize the overlays in the 2d views?

also another question
3. how do you spawn a jeep? every time i try my map crashes. ive read up in the VDC and done exactly as it says and it still doesnt work.

and finally,
i am trying to make a (sort of) movie for the ending credits for my mod. in doing this i have encountered some problems. basically i want the view to quickly change from looking at one box to another, but not so quickly as you cant see the view change (i.e. not instant). also trying to move the viewcontrol on a train results in it not stopping and flying through the skybox.
4. is point_viewcontrol the right entity for doing this?
5. are you able to change targets with the same point_viewcontrol?
6. how do you set up the path_ entities properly to make the viewcontrol move from say, path1 to path2 and STOP?

you wouldnt lose all your files, back them up onto dvd's, cd's, or a removeable drive - then format. remember alot of the space on your hard drive is used by programs that are easily re-downloadable from the net (steam is almost 20% of mine - completely online)
that would probably fix any software problems - even if it isnt a virus
otherwise its faulty hardware

look at the counterstrike climbing (kz) maps.
they have a nice timer thats very complex thats made from entities, and also theres a plugin that does exactly what you want. (kreedz multiplugin) but it may only be for cs i dont know

SVENCOOP: thinking an enemy grunt is a friend in a grunt skin and you run up to him and say 'heal me!!'
HL2: using that cheat where you stand on something and grav gun it and go flying upwards (watch the hl2 speed run) and you go too high and as you fall you think 'oh crap im gunna die' but you dont cus you land in a patch of water and ur like 'phew! i need a drink!' and you forget to pause it while you get your coke and 1 headcrab comes and sucks your brains out.

ok
the reasons consoles suck:
1. gamepad
2. memory cards (not in the case of xbox)
3. limited flexibility

the reasons they dont:
1. games. many games use special features of the console
2. portability (the new look ps2, nintendo DS, etc)
3. compatibility

you have to realise that consoles are aimed NOT at hardcore gamers, but at the typical 'loungeroom' gamer. gamepads are there because its compact. try picking up a keyboard and mouse and playing a game in mid-air. memory cards were made so someone can go to a friends house, shove it in their ps2, and point at their face, laugh and scream: 'haha told you i finished it 100%!!! gimmie my 20 bucks!'. most games dont let you change controls so the n00bcaeks dont get confuzzled. but you can just buy an xbox game knowing it will work in your xbox, whereas some people with 3+ year old graphics card has a 80% chance of their PC game not working.

the PC/console battle is just a matter of opinion. if you like mapping, 3rd-party mods, easy-to-use online multiplayer and upgrading parts once a year, you like PC's. if you like not getting caught with a game that doesnt work, simplicity and portability, you like consoles.

almost everyone here will like PC's, because this is a MAPPING site. you cant make custom maps for consoles (except on those rare games with editors)

the 6600gt is just a shade lower than the 6800
The 6600GT has 8 pixel pipes and 128bit memory while the 6800GT has 16 pixel pipes and 256bit memory...quite a big difference.
notice the '6800' NOT '6800gt'
try to remember that there are several types and when someone says a model they dont mean the exact type.
for example, 7800 doesnt equal 7800gtx
and notice on your link that there is only one nvidia card between 6800 and the 6600GT and thats the 6800LE which is a waste of money

the 6600gt is just a shade lower than the 6800 - i researched before i bought my own. ive had mine for a month now but i dropped my computer box and damaged it so now im getting warrantee :
but it works fine except my cpu is dragging it down......sometime this year i will upgrade to a pci express comp with a 7800gtx :biggrin:
