in Advanced Brushwork Mini-Compos Post #213263
Bahh, I love high poly stuff.
I'm just making a really highpoly room. It already has 1113 brushes and 7205 faces. It'll be aproximetly 3000 wpolies in hammer. I predict my computer wont be able to run it, it's so annoying because I like this map, and I'll keep it as a secret untill I'll publish it, no screenies. ;)

in memory allocation failure Post #213226
The entities aren't the problem in your map since it's connected to rad.(lighting) Either that you run other programs while compiling or that the map is too vast and not well optimized.
If you don't run other programs try using a batch compiler for it eats less virtual memory.(search for slackiller programs in the links page)

If thats not the problem and it's just that your map isn't well optimized here is what I think you should try to do:
I guess the water texture scale 1x1 and the water expands over a large portion of the map covering vast areas. It's simply that the compile and your computer can't cope with so much small faces. I'd seggest that you try optimizing the map as much as possible. Enlarge the water's texture scale. 2x2 might look a bit uglier, but it pays back in preformence, and it wont be so noticlible since water are usally transperant. ;)

This error is similar to the allocblock: full error, mallocblock: error...ect So if you get them it means it's still quite the same problem as the memory allocation one.

in Surgery and the benefits of gaming. Post #213139
While stupid politicians keep crapping on about how video games are evil, more and more studies are showing the benefits that come from gaming.
That article didn't counterdict that idea, read the last paragraph carefully:
Parents should not see this study as beneficial if their child is playing video games for over an hour a day," Gentile said. "Spending that much time playing video games is not going to help their child's chances of getting into medical school.
Playing all day acording to the paragraph isn't helpful. They ment that playing aproximetly 9 hour a week is helpful if it's in addition to studing. All in proportions, not too much not too little.

As for my opinion: surely there are other and better ways to develop those skills, I'm sure of it. Maybe drawing. :| Although that there is nothing wrong in playing in the computer.

Using many text entities at once, making sure they wont be on the same channel and in the same location on the screen. :)

First tie one by one to entity and leave the propoties alone.
After you tied them all choose all of them and press alt+enter.

in Breakable Blocks Post #212476
You can turn each one of them to an entity(Alt+E) then select them all together and press Alt+Enter. The entity proporties window will pop up and everything you'll change in it will be applied to all the entities you chose. :)

It's rather good. It reminds me something but I can't put my finger on it... Oh yes, it reminded me of the real ghostbusters, going out in the middle of the night to someplace that strange activities where reported there earlier.
But it is more similar to a game then a story, it could make a nice game.
It also reminds me of the stories I used to write when I was a boy, same simplcity that so well fits computer games.

Manually rescaling the verticies on one end of a cylinder using VM many times will cause invalid solids and/or the "leaf face" errors.
Not if used wisly. Usally moving a vertical a 0.25 unit doesn't cause problems. If you can't agline manually then use Hlfix but I can't say it's the ultimate solution for any problem of the sort.

in Light_env problem Post #212135
By texturing a world brush with it. :P The problem is obviously caused by that visible AAATrigger texture, the AAAtrigger messes up with rad.(lighting) I don't know why valve created a texture with such proporties. :

in Hollow Sphere Post #212112
Now I know why you had all those trobles with Hlfix. It's because the tutorial tells to use the Alt+E option! This option completly ignores the grid so you'll have to snap each vertical to grid menually or let Hlfix do it for you. Of course it may not snap them exectly as you like and might create nastly things(even if you wont notice them), but you can't help it, it doesn't know what you want it just does what it knows to do.

I suggest to snap them manually, like what I'm doing now. :)

in Need helping with a trigger_once Post #211892
Trigger_once only works once, for certain events you don't want to be repeated. Like a falling boulder. You don't want it to be triggered again so it will climb up again, do you?

Trigger_multiple is exectly like trigger_once only that is can be oporated as many times as you like.
Here is a nice way for advanced mappers to control doors using trigger_multiple:

(1)Well off grid means that it is too close to the end of the grid,(less then 65 units) or (2)that you have an invalid solid.
(44,-1552,-4110)(1552,48,-4042)
Since these corodinates given by the compile log are reasonible and aren't something like 99999999, the first reason causes the problem, and I'm sure you know already what to do, ehh? ;)

Hey rimrook, I remember you posted a little explanation about making costum textures from sketch. I remember you created an ugly looking texture that was quite simple to make and then used a overlay pic to make it look better. Can you post is again? It'll help me a great deal.

Another thing, where do you get your overlay pics? Don't tell me google because I simply don't really know what to search for. If you tell me google give me an example for what should I look for. Thanks in advance.

It's nice, yet there is a lot to be done! The sign still doesn't seem real enough. It looks 2 dimentional. I would expect the text to be extruded inward a bit and at the lower sides the with line should be darker at parts.

Try using photo shop magnificent fiture- blend modes. Right click on the layer and choose blend options.

A window will apear with all the blending modes at the left side and on the right side the mode's configurations.
There are quite a few mode you should know of. Lighten only shows the parts of the layer that are brighter then the pic below, and darken is just the oppisite.
Exturde is quite self exploitery, it darkens and lightens that edges of the visible parts in the layer making them look like they are extruded, inward or outward, your choice. This is the mode you should have used in the sign.

Hope this helps. :)

Please dont say its a disgusting world. That aspect of life makes up only like 1%.
Well not sure... with all the greed in this world. I mean some people are really greedy, they desire much more then they need. If people would take only what they need what you say might have been right, for greed, lust and desire have no limits, there is always something better, or more things that you want.
The proof to this greed may be found in statistics: approximetly 5% of this world's population owns most of the resources and money in this world.

What you say is right if you look at it from a general prespective, and acording to that prespective to subject isn't that important, the fact that the human race continues to excist makes this world a good one.

Yeah, hunter is right. You may try to keep the layout the same and even the gameplay the same but at list change how the map looks like!
Instead of a desert you might turn it into a jungle, tundra, underwater, underground base or even in an alien world! Don't remake it exectly and only make some changes like placing all the guns in one side of the map and the ammo in another. Make it original! :)
