I definately wouldn't use 3DMark for CPU tests, they are relatively new in that program, and aren't at all reliable. You should use Prime95, far more reliable, and aimed at CPU, & has excellent RAM tests as well. Perfect for your requirements. It also allows you to run seperate tests on each core, utilizing them properly - and has loads of setting relating to timings, ....etc. You should definately try it.

in Updating firmware on my router, how? Post #197314
you need to log onto the firewall... by typing its IP address into your explorer. Probably like 192.168.2.1 or something similar.

Then on the menu there should be an option for Router settings, or it could be under Advanced settings. I have also seen this option under Router Maintanece (spl.?) before. You should be redirected auto. when you find the option.

Otherwise, try Linksys website, and do a product search, then go to help & support. It could be classed as a driver on the website. Then download, and on your router settings, page, select update firmware, and locate file on your computer.

Hope this helps

in Buying a new 20" / 21" Monitor Post #197308
Gateway FPD2185W TFT LCD Monitor

Well, after a bit, well.... a lot of fuss with the store I bought it from, I have finally got my monitor, and i LOVE IT!!! Delivery wasn't the problem... but they forgot to exchange the amercian power cord for an english one. Had to wait till this morning for it.

As you can see, I need a wall mount, as my keyboard is touching the monitor, but it's sweet.

I apologise for crappy picture quality. I have two good digital cameras..... One brought 2 weeks ago, the other yesterday! Arghhhh.... had to resort to my dig. camcorder!!!! Noooo...............................

Had one bright pixel... and it still do! ;) but not to bother me, it was expected. Next to none backlight bleed, excellent image quality, and HD videos look a treat.

It has an excellent ratio... 1:1000, although I haven't measured it myself yet.

I would definately recommend this monitor for anyone thinking about upgrading to a 21", despite the less-known / less-popular manufacture. It's a multi-purpose monitor, having composite, component, s-vid, digital, and vga inputs. Also has HDCP support for vista, etc. compatibility, and uses DCDi technology by faroujda, which apparently greatly improves analogue input picture quality.

Finally, has PiP support, and 90 degree rotation that automatically adjusts when you move the monitor round.

I had that... firefor wouldn't open, though I didn't try YouTube. You need to go to tools and options, then go to privacy and cookies, and fiddle with those settings. I think you need to allow website to set cookies, and "to they expire" the top box should be ticked, and the next two un-ticked.

Well, that's how it is on mine....

30inch?! that's just getting carried away!! No, my comp ain't in a unit, just on a desk against a wall.

This is my first widescreen monitor - I have a widescreen TV, but is isn't exactly the same..................... ;)

Just wondered though.... what happens on a game that supports 1200 x 1000 approx. max? Do you get black bars, or is it stretched? I would prefer black bars.... some of my games can't cope on max at 1680x1050! :) Next up.... X1900XTX Crossfires ;)

Getting monitor on monday, so I will post pics and keep everyone updated. Saw it in the store, and it was nice... although they weren't helping themselves... damn thing was connected through VGA?!?!?!?!!?

:) LOL!

@M_gargantua: but as there is no increase in pixels from 17 - 19", what's the point. I understand that its 2" bigger diagonal, but everything's just stretched?! The quality is no better.

Also, I can't get a CRT - there is a wall 2ft from my chair! ;)

in Buying a new 20" / 21" Monitor Post #196510
why? 19" is just pointless, no pixel increase, just streched. 17" is too small, just, and I don't like mine anymore. I also wanted another input for playstation / vcr. 15"........................ don't even get me started!! :)

Which is why I ended up with 20/21"

However, after hours of searching, I have found ONE shop in the UK that sells the gateway, and there happens to be one near me! :) It also offers an excellent 30 day, no quibble returns policy, so I will try it, and if it sucks, I will return it!!

Aren't I clever! :)

btw, its staples.co.uk for anyone thats interested. Seems quite cheap.

reviews are pretty mixed... as always. So complaints about the built in PSU in the gateway hums loudly, as the controls were hard to use on the asus. If anyone has any other suggestions I would be happy to consider them.

Does anyone have a glossy screen, and what sort of difference does it make to image quality?

Im after a new 20" / 21" TFT widescreen monitor for my computer. Im not on much of a budget - as long as it ain't stupid! I was looking at spending under about ?420.

Now, i've narrowed it down to two.... I think. The thing is, there are so many out there nowadays, it's just so hard. - Thats were you lot come in! :)

ASUS PW201

Gateway FPD2185W

These are the two.

So, what Im after, are your opinions. I don't care about speakers... derrr (who does?!?!?!) I would like another input for vcr / tv, or something, and i don't care too much about PiP.

Well, thanks in advance for you input.

You don't have a temp. probe or anything as such? But yeah, it does sound like an overheating issue. how many / intake / outake fans do you have and where are they located. Also, have you recently installed anything new, hardware or software, and how new are your components?

Although, I like it because I believe it to be the most economical program.... if you know what I mean. It just means that the video needs a bit of 'tidying' in a video editing prog.

However, for ALL screen recorders, you do need quite a good PC, - nothing is worse than watching back a laggy video - it bums! :)

what happens if you have a widescreen with some games? I was looking at upgrading to one from my 4:3, but worried - what actually happens to the games - streched, smaller? I just love the idea of watching DVDs on a widescreen - I also use a TV card rather than another TV, due to lack of space....

Are all laptop drives - of this century, intercompatible. Can you just rip anyone out and replace it with another - of any sort? I know it may not look right, as many laptops employ smooth designs on the sides and most drives are plain, but is it possible - like the enclosures of a desktop PC?

try using ATITool to underclock your graphics card. then you will really find out if it is overheating. Using a massive fan isn't necessary a good idea, but you can also use ATITool to monitor temps. when under stress. Run the 3D motion, and watch the temps. rise.

in MPEG Editing WITHOUT compression Post #191894
I'm having trouble finding a good application that I can open an .MPEG2 File in, edit it (ie, cut on sections such as adverts) then save it again, but without having to re-compile it, or compress it.

I have a TV-capture card, which the videos I record I want 'perfect!'

So far, I've only come across two that could even be considered -

Able MPEG-VCR
Womble MPEG Editor

I have installed and tried both, however MPEG-VCR is extremely limited and Womble increases file size dramatically, and takes ages to save....

I 'edited' a 500mb MPEG2 file, saved it as the same format, and it was shorter, and it came out at 2.5GB!!!!!!

ABLE MPEG-VCR doesn't give you enough editing capabilities....

So, does any1 know of a good editing program, ....... not the usual sort, that doesn't take 4 hours to compile a damn 30min. clip, and won't end up bigger!!! I don't understand why the file should be sooo much larger, when I have cut the adverts already!!!

Tah muchly!

PS... btw, thanks every1 for all your help with my computer problems, its now running completely stable!

1st Place

Rowleybob - Gordon Freeman Statue

Although probably one of the most obvious themes for a Half-Life statue, this one was carried out particularly well. It was an extremely accurate representation of the original H.E.V suit used within the game, accompanied by the shabby face of Gordon Freeman!

On the whole, it was well textured, and was instantly recognizable. The statue's stance was appealing and was made slightly more amusing by the accompaniment of his trusty crowbar!

Upon opening the RMF file, the clean and well-organized build of the structure is instantly noticeable, and the proportions of the statue were relative, just scrapping Rowleybob a gold trophy with his more complex brush-work and excellent VM. Well Done!

2nd Place

Srry - Dragon Statue

I preferred the theme of this statue slightly more than Rowleybob's entry, partly because I have seen many attempts at recreating this sort of statue, but rarely to this level.

Once again, it was a very clean entry, however, the RMF produced an invalid solid structure error, not that it detracted from the entry. There was also a mis-placed brush, but I believe that was due to a graphical bug. The tail of the dragon was well defined, and at an excellent stance.

The bright red eyes were also a nice touch, and were extremely effective when placed on a plainly textured statue. The details in the hands and feet were also well manipulated, making this entry worthy of second place.

Congratulations to the both of you, feel free to copy the appropriate trophy into your profile, and good luck in future competitions!!!
