Ok, I just thought of a solution, but I need help to ensure I get this right.

My plan is to install Ubuntu and AVG Avast! on a thumb drive (16GB should do) and do a scan of the system to hopefully remove any virus present. Is an anti virus, an anti virus? Will a Linux one, detect threats on a Windows system, most if not all?

Forgot to add this, but I can't boot into safe mode. When I try, it restarts the computer automatically. This leads me to the virus conclusion. Also, it's an Acer computer. To do a backup, I need to load their eRecovery software in Windows first...which I can't.

As for a disk imaging program, I can't install anything more on the computer. I tried installing AVG on it go get any possible virus off, and the installer wouldn't load.

When it comes to a Windows 7 install, we got a free upgrade copy, so I could forget backing up Vista and rely on a Windows 7 backup disc. However, if it's a virus, it's just going to infect the new install, especially since 7 would back up the files on the Vista install.

So, something weird has happened to my parents computer. They claim it was cuz of a power surge, but I think it's a virus.

After a surge, they were no longer able to load games/antivirus/recovery software. Oddly enough, though AAA titles can't be launched, the Mahjong included in Vista will. I'm fairly certain it's a virus, but I can't do a system restore to a more stable version so I can run an antivirus (neither System Restore nor ACER eRecovery will launch).

Is there a LiveCD, or something similar, I can get on my system, that I can run that will allow me to run an antivirus scan on the system and fix this, or is there another possible problem/solution?

I'm looking to get a secondary system, something I can use on the go, and this little number caught my eye.

My question is though, does this have enough power to run 3 certain programs, Source SDK, GIMP and the XSI Mod Tool (preferably, or an equivalent 3D program)?

Hmm...funny, cuz I upped my Paged Pool Memory a couple of weeks ago when I was having artifacting issues with TF2.

Using this article on the TF2 Wiki, I upped my Paged Pool to 192mb and it fixed my TF2 problem. But that was several weeks ago. This problem w/ CSS in within a week.

in Windows 7 64-bit Concern Post #273592
Ok, I've had a concern about Windows 7 64-bit for a couple days now.

I know that it allows for 4GB or more of RAM, but a downside I've heard has to do w/ the CPU. According to my buddy that got the RTM version of Pro through his college, it sees his (the Xeon version of the E8400) as a single core CPU instead of a dual core. He claims it's 'cus of the 64-bit operations seeing the two 32-bit cores as a single 64-bit unit. Think I explained that right.

Anyway, he tried to tell me otherwise, but I can't buy this as a good thing. To me, this seems like one step forward for memory, but a step back for processors, since it doesn't double the speed or allow for multitasking.

Can anyone shed some light on this and explain...preferably with out getting too technical?

in Killer Games Post #269966
I just watched the Penn & Teller: Bull! and if you haven't seen it, you all should. They break down the hype and show that this violent game crusade is total bullshit. Highlights are:

-a nine-year-old boy who plays violent games is given the chance to fire three shots from an assault rifle, only fires one, and then cries afterwards

-they state a fact that football (a game encouraged by schools), has killed over 630 kids in the last 70 years and caused countless physical injuries of varied type (blown knees, concussions, etc...)

-they debunk one anti-games advocate's school shooting triangle (knock-off of the fire triangle), which features 'guns', 'troubled kids' and 'mass-killing simulators' with a school shooting that happened before the invention of video games and the most deadly school killing, were the weapon of choice was explosives and was perpetrated by a 55-year-old man

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It's hilarious.

Vent is a voice service similar in principle to IRC. It's used alot by clans for CS:S and WOW for a more secure way of communicating to teammates.

Because of the nature of a Vent server, there might actually be more activity in it than the IRC chan, which is dead most of the time.

Still need to know if the system can run it though. :( I have NO luck w/ Google usually.

Actually, my draw distances were quite reduced at the time. Lowering my undo levels allowed me to normalize them though.

As for the age of the system, it's about 3-4 years old w/ a P4 3.4GHz HT, 1GB RAM and an X300.

Oh, and thanks for the complement, though looking back, I probably should have put not in brackets :(

It's not my load, as this is the same system I've used since I joined TWHL and just finished a reformat. However, it does seem the be a load issue as I lowered the number of times I can undo, and it seemed to fix it.

AS I said though, it happened w/ a brand new, never seen a brush map. I placed two brushes, clicked on one, and got the error and the cycling. This makes me think, it's something else.

I went to start my mapping again, and lucky me, Hammer isn't working.

What happens, on both new and old maps, after I click on an object, it'll give me a warning that my 'load is very high' and after clicking ok, it will begin to cycle through every object behind the pointer (if there are 4 objects in line behind the pointer, it'll cycle through selecting each one).

WTF is the problem?

So here's the deal.

I got the Fable 2 Limited Edition for Xmas and as it turns out, I got hit w/ that 'lack of bonus code card' bullshit that was going on. I went to the xbox.com page and submitted my request for a code on Dec. 29th but apparently I've not heard good things about ppl actually getting the codes this way. To that end, I'm looking for back up.

Does anyone know anyone who got it as well (North American version, just in case) and got the code who can send it to me? Does anyone know where on the net I can find a code that someone posted for all to see? Also, how would I redeem the code (new to the 360)? All I want to the content that is supposed to be mine.

Why the hell they didn't do like the Gears of War 2-disc re-release and put the content on the bonus disc instead of relying on an extra insert is beyond me.

in Setting Up A 2 Router Wireless Network Post #259261
OK, so what's going on is that I'm moving my systems up to my room, 2 floors up from my wireless router and though it's an N router, the Wii/PS3 use G and I'm not spending another f****n $100 so my X360 can have a feature that it should have had in the first place.

Regardless, my previous experience w/ a G network was that at that distance, I got a very poor signal and wanted to set up something stronger. Unfortunately, there is no way to run an ethernet up to my room, so I want to set up a second N router in my room and have the two routers communicate to each other.

What I was wondering is how stable that connection will be (will I drop a lot or not) and what hardware I will need (if it's just a standard pair of routers or if I need something special)?
