There's free resources like Codecademy that'll essentially take you through the basics.

Bunny hoping is more of a multiplayer technique though, isn't it?

I like speed running myself, particularly games I know really well. It's cool seeing entire chunks of games being skipped because of some completely insane hack. Super Mario 64 beaten in five minutes with 0 stars is awesome.

I'm no fan of Steam's DRM, but I can't say there's a huge difference between WON and Steam aside from that.

Just off the top of my head, the bosses in Descent were fantastic. Descent is the kind of game where you feel wonderfully empowered most of the time, but when you hit those boss levels, you suddenly feel very fragile and frantic. Coupled with the soundtrack and the physically imposing design of the bosses themselves, it added an amazing twist to the few levels they featured in.

Nice work, Jessie. I would say to look a little more carefully at the shape of the arm, as they generally taper a lot more at the crook and the wrist than what you've demonstrated. Secondly, a hand pressed up against a hard surface like will not create a hard line as you've got it depicted there - I would put in a curve away from the glass at the point where you've got the shadow on the arm, rather than where the arm ends now.

If a proper LAN is to come out of this, you're probably going to have to supply a few PCs. Carting a PC across the country is one thing, but lugging it overseas just isn't feasible.

in Sketches / Drawings Thread Post #322763
Just to bring this topic back on track, I'll outline some of my own drawing tips.
  • Drawing is a skill, like anything else. I don't believe in natural ability: anyone can become a good at drawing. Practice, practice, practice.
  • Expose yourself to the work of a variety of artists. It's tempting to try and find work that you feel is aesthetically pleasing or close to what you feel your style is, but you're limiting your knowledge. You never know what you'll latch onto as a style. You must do this ALL THE TIME - I can't stress this enough, even if you think your drawing style is perfect.
  • Once you start settling into a style, start imitating the work of the artists you really like. You can start off doing direct imitations, but keep advancing it until all you're taking is just little pieces of their style (perhaps the way they draw a nose, or a mouth or some other feature). You'll find that your own style will start to emerge.
  • From a technical point of view, if you're going to imitate an artist, try challenging yourself. Instead of doing a direct copy of the line art as you see it, break the composition down into rough shapes. That way, you get a sense of how the original artist reached their own result: I don't know any artists that don't rough out their work first.
  • Developing drawing abilities is a fairly autonomous task, but there are courses you can do that would help: stuff like nude drawing, perspective drawing and still life painting help a lot. There are a tonne of reference books for human poses and shapes that are well worth investing in. Understanding exactly what gives a human figure its form, weight and balance is the path to understanding how you can exaggerate those features and make them feel believable.
  • Don't get bogged down in tools and equipment and programs, at least not at an early stage. A good set of pencils, erasers and paper still can't beat a computer. I generally work digitally, but everything I produce starts out life as a rough sketch on paper.
  • There are certain rules and techniques with drawing (and art in general). Always remember that these 'rules' are just guidelines. Sometimes it's just fun to go nuts.

Will hold!

I'm a Smash Bros. veteran: been playing since the original Nintendo 64 version, and while I'm certainly not a pro, Strider will no doubt confirm my prowess (or, at the very least, demonstrate his ineptitude).

I dislike fighting games for the most part, mostly because of general dullness and an overly complicated moveset. The great thing about Smash Bros. is that every character uses the exact same moveset, and the moveset itself is incredibly simple. It really does come down to what character feels right for you, because you can easily adapt to any character.

I've watched a lot of KSP videos done by Robbaz. While they aren't strictly that informative, they're ridiculously entertaining. I love the scope of the game, though: being able to send a Kerbal to a distant planet, then mount a rescue operation is amazing. :D
