Well, it's not much to go on, but it seems like you remember some things that could help you. The shape and design of those vehicles seems specific enough, and the resources seem to be gathered from a single unit instead of a field of resources.

Why do those tree-like-things on the right have tentacles? What are those things that look like radioactive waste at the top of the screen?

I doubt you'd be able to get an answer from TWHL to be honest, but you might be able to ask these same questions on some big RTS board.

ANY kind of visuals that you remember would be a great help here. What did the ground look like? Did it have varying levels of terrain height? What color were the resources? On what side of the screen was the build/unit menu?

With the vague description we have, it could be anything.

He didn't hate Half Life, just Episode 1.
That picture was in an Episode 1 discussion thread where Zombieloffe posted a picture of himself holding a retail version of Episode 1 while smiling and giving the camera a thumbs up. Jobabob obviously made a parody of it.

So do we get to meet a buggy rectangle if we seed it with "Ash"? Oh boy, sometimes I crack myself up.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of worlds those clever than me will be generating once they figure out exactly how the name is seeded.

To respond to the original topic: I think Silent Hill Origins was the only game I've ever pre-ordered. I enjoyed it enough to say it was worth it.
The line between "pre-order worthy" and "purchase-without-pirating worthy" is very fuzzy. Either way, you're sort of taking a chance.

Edit: Yes we do. And it's fun.

Consuming means using a product and in the process degrading or destroying it. Using a digital copy doesn't cost anything to anyone (except the people you download it from, but those are donating their processing power, electricity and bandwidth on their own free will).
This doesn't apply to digital media. You don't "degrade or destroy" digital media by consuming it, you merely experience it.
Someone who owns the copyright to something... owns the right to copy it. That's why it's called a copyright. It's not stealing, as PB said, but it is akin to counterfeiting.

Edit: Removed long, unnecessary rant.

To reiterate what PB said:

Without knowing exactly what audience this new community will cater to, it's nigh impossible to come up with that perfect name. We know that it'll support more engines. Will it be a select few engines or will it be ANY engine that is or will be? Which other aspects of game modding will be supported aside from mapping? Will it support entirely new game creation? If these aren't even hammered out yet, the name can wait, IMHO.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "same content, same community" now, because the others posts seem to suggest that the content will be vastly expanded upon, but it's completely unknown as to what extent.

Edit: I have no idea what's going on anymore, I'm out of this thread.

Why are we so intent on coming up with new titles for TWHL?
Just because twhl.com is taken doesn't mean we have to change the name of the whole community, just the URL. "Map Vault" and "The Grid" sound great and everything, but the TWHL title is really a lot more than just a title to me.

Maybe I'm just being a grumpy old man, but I've been here since late 2003 and the actual title of this community has a special place in my heart. If it absolutely must be changed, I'd strongly encourage the admins to keep the idea of playing on the Half Life name as a fraction in mind. EG: 2Half, HalfSquared, etc.

Ip Man
Saw this one at a small university movie night club.
I don't pretend to be well-versed in kung fu movies, but as far as I could tell this movie was pretty great. The cinematography was gorgeous and the fight scenes were mostly jaw-droppingly awesome [and fucking brutal] without seeming over the top [mostly]. The plot and characters, though loosely based on real events, were also surprisingly, pleasantly engrossing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Edit: Oi! I also saw True Grit several weeks ago.

It wasn't quite what I expected, but a great movie by it's own merits. It's a lot more funny/witty, and a lot less badass than what trailers might lead. Truly, this is another movie driven by dialogue.
It also stars Lebowski.

Adam Savage would say, "Well there's your problem!"

You'll have to change the transparent area from the color it is now to whatever is the very last color in the palette. Just bucket filling it in Wally would be fine.

in a texture doesnt work - opacity Post #289565
That's not the palette index.
There's 256 colors in your texture's color palette. Index 256 (and it's 256, not 255, whoops) is a special color, because that color can become transparent.

Edit: Or I guess it technically is index 255 because it starts with 0 and all that jazz.

Just open the fucker in Wally and see if the very bottom right color on the palette is the color you want it to be.

Make sure that the color that's supposed to be transparent is also index 255 on the color palette, firstly.

Look on the bright side, if it always turns out shitty you can just say, "Oh yeah, it's a TF2 texture." :)

But it looks good for what it is. I certainly couldn't do it, so props there. I'd say tone down those green patches first and foremost. If the green is a shadow issue, then I don't know what to do. Secondly, change that yellow tone to something a little earthier. I'd hate to say brown, but that's where it should probably be leaning. Right now it looks more like a vomit yellow than a rocky yellow.

The intensity of your bump map seems off. Look at how the only deep parts of the bump map are at certain edges in that L4D2 screenshot. Elsewhere it's just a bunch of very small, very shallow dotted bumps. Contrarily, your texture looks like it's just riddled with very large, deep holes with virtually no edges. So make those holes more shallow, and define your stone edges a little more.

I hope this comes off more as helpful than arrogant.

All right, it's time to clarify this once and for all because I've never quite understood it. I always thought that vertices snapped to the nearest unit during compilation, but apparently not.

What are the consequences of compiling brushes with vertices that lie off/in between the 1-unit grid? What, if anything abnormal or otherwise, would happen? At what point will it just not compile?
Can subunit mapping be applied to world brushes, or is it limited to entities (not breaking up faces and whatnot)? Tell me everything you know.

I don't know what all this "from lay-out" talk means. Let's all make counter-strike maps for the next compitition.
The layout is your map's floor plan. In "map from a layout", we are given a floor plan and have to build a theme around it.
Check Compo 27 if you want to see one from the past.

Would anyone be down for scary mapping?

But I was going to use models for wires and vines, not brushes. I've found a way to import maps into Milkshape, so I can model around the map itself.

Striker: Looks good, just stretch out that repetitive ground texture. I would also suggest using a totally different texture for the actual dome, something sleeker.

Here's an early Hammer shot of something I started today. I sort of... outright stole OxiB00ST's he_fenestra layout. Hope he's OK with that :|
