I like your idea. Maybe do it in stages, i.e., have a themed prefab contest first, and den use the submitted prefabs for the compo? Maybe instead there is a suitable prefab pack already out there, OR find someone to make/donate all the the construction materials for consistency's sake.

Map-from-base compos are fun and easy because you just have to decorate and go. I agree remaking-a-game is just like having preexisting content, because you already have a blueprint of what to do.

Unofficially I don't think there is enough interest for a compo right now, as much as we're trying to get it off the ground... Maybe if Atom and Rim rebooted the mini/map-from-base challenges we could get something going that more people'd be interested in?

My vote is for #3 because it includes arcade games. FYI, both #3 and #4 include your own levels if you wanted to enter something as Then & Now
It doesn't have to be a 3d game either, Dimbark; I would do a classic ScummVM game if #4, and a classic arcade game of some kind if #3.
If you really wanted to still make those maps for 2005 I say go for it, maybe we could allow for newer games, with the understanding you will lose some of your point score the further away you get from 2000, e.g., in the event of a tie, the pre-2K map would win over one from 2005.

It agrees that #1 is broadenizated too much; A make anything compo is probably not a good thing?
Golden-Age PC games seemed to consistently have more heart and creativity put into them, and it sets them apart imo. As technology improved and consoles began to rise, we lost some creativity/heart along the way.
Then and Now might attract more votes if we allowed for any previous map and not just from the map vault? [/devil's advocate]

what about an assault course or race map, that being you are either challenged to get from one place to another--wether this be just generic shooting, agility, puzzles or something--or a race in which combines that with a time limi...Seconded, this would be a lot of fun!
Why not just call it Hazard Course contest and be done with it? Bonus points to entries that include some sort of timer to mark player's score.

Mapping a place you know always turns out more realistically too, even if it's from a TV show or movie; drawing ideas & inspiration from things you are familiar with is a good thing.

Because it seems like there are always peeps here willing to make example maps, possibly add a requester button here, and possibly one in the Map Vault/Example Maps section too?

Possibly you can isolate the culprit brush(es) causing that error, by using the big-block method for locating leaks?
If all else fails you could use the original brushwork as a template and rebuild everything, though I know this is not the solution you're looking for

You could cheeze out and simulate it, i.e., make a prop static disappear and have an ambient_generic play the pickup sound when triggered. You could add a info_text displaying:
