The server was updated to the latest version.

Computercraft seems really cool, unfortunately it's only available for 1.8.9 yet. It also says it require Minecraft Forge, but is that a server-side thing?

Minecraft 1.9.2

Do you think these versions are worth the effort of updating?

Shaders Pr0n

So I installed the OptiFine mod, which by itself is quite recommended to have(you can squeeze a bit more FPS on lower-end machines). This is required to run shaders in Minecraft. I then downloaded Sildur's Vibrant Shaders (Medium), and later in the screenshots(later edit: seems like the screenshots were not uploaded in the sequence I took them) I also installed S&K Photorealism resource pack.

The result is pretty damn impressive:

This is not for low-end machines, but should work quite well on mainstream modern graphics cards. I've got an nVidia GeForce 650m on my laptop where I tested this, it's from 2012, and got between 20-25 FPS on 1600x900 resolution.

I figured out how to configure the overview mapper and make a crop of the visible area during night time. It's also possible to rotate the view, so now Jessie's home is visible!

Current exploration of the map. You can notice that far to the west there's a jungle meeting a desert, lots of goodies must be in that jungle! To the south there are some plains with horses. To the north-east there are some interesting island formations. Not too far from Tet's house also, to the south-west from spawn is a village I think he discovered.

Tetsu0's home and his road for which I think he put more effort that he wants to admit. Parallel to that runs a water canal for boats which connects the spawn lake with the river near Tet's house.

Alright so I've set up the ChestShop and Vault plugins, and they seem to be working, but I'm very confused as to how they work without an actual economy plugin. That's because I couldn't find an appropriate economy plugin: most of the popular ones are either abandoned or not working for the latest minecraft version. I'm gonna need suggestions with this one.

[EDIT] We're in business! spigot works, and I tested the flying plugin from bukkit which works! ( the particular flying plugin requires that you provide "fuel", I've set that to reeds for now).

So what I want to do next is add store functionality, so everyone can set up a store with their collected items.
I noticed someone made some huge dirt arrows that I assume point towards the spawn area. Who is the author of this?
I did that, in order to not get lost as I explored the terrain.
Orange, Right now mobs spawn at night and the server seems to be on hard mode. However if you die, you keep all your stuff - including XP.
It is actually set on easy. Also the world generator was set on "Standard".

During 9:30 - 11:00 AM Greenwich time, 20/03/2016 the server might be restarted or shut down a couple of times, I'm trying to see if I can get the Spigot running.

I use CoinBasefor my online account. I think it's the "go-to" service for such a thing and it's based in San Francisco, so for you in particular I think wire-transfers work. Yes that's a referral link, but it only works if you ever buy more than 100$, so what the heck. Here's the clean link: CoinBase.
Yeah you can with paypal too, but this is, I think, if not simpler, how sharing the costs on the internet should work :crowbar:. ( although I do have to use other services to trade from bitcoin to litecoin or viceversa if I don't have enough of one coin to pay).

Server address: 149.202.64.130:25590 (I have no idea if this is fixed or not, it could change. If yes, I kindly ask an admin to give me the rights of editing this first post every now and then)

Specs:
  • Location: Strasbourg(France)(Hosthavoc servers): I got about 45ms ping, I also pinged one of their servers from USA and got about 100ms, so this will be playable( I'm sorry for Australians though... maybe someday we'll have servers literally in the clouds and combined with fast satellite links the ping will go down)
  • Memory: 1GB. This should be enough for 10-15 players. There was a cheaper option with 512mb, but I'm playing it safe even though we won't play so much on the server
The monthly cost is 5$ for these specs but I paid using litecoins. Since I'm not going to continuously pay myself for this server, I've set up a litecoin address and a bitcoin address where you can send the coins if you wish to support the server. Here's a link to a text file containing both the addresses:

Litecoin and Bitcoin addresses

This is much easier than using paypal and other services. For this particular matter I ask that you also write a "description" for your transaction if the wallet/service allows you, saying something like "for twhl server from #name# xoxoxo much love", and also announce me through a PM or here on the forum. Please do not send more than necessary, the idea is to support the server and if 3-4 guys donate like a $1 or something, it should be enough. I will not be chasing people trying to send them back the money, this is purely for supporting the server.
The next payment will be on 15th April, I think. I haven't done this before, so bear with me( I also do not guarantee I'm going to be 24/24 solving a problem if one arises, I have a very busy schedule and will mostly only be able to play in weekends).
There are some additional features that I haven't bought because we don't know how involved people will be yet. For example, at +$2.5 we can get a custom DNS, and +4.15$ a dedicated IP. So that would be a total of $11.65 monthly. So if you guys are willing to share the wallet load, yeah we can do this.

Right now the server is pretty much vanilla survival( I actually like it), but there's a crap load of bukkit plugins that can be installed. Not going to stay and configure it this day, but the first thing I'm looking for is adding teleportation somehow.

Since this is a server dedicated to our community, do you guys think we need anti-grief? I mean, I think there's a bit of trust here :).

Anyway, I'm expecting some fellow shouters' here like Tetsu0, DiscoStu and Angry Carrot(a.k.a Mighty Atom a.k.a MuzzleFlash). And a dozen other players I remember playing in the past :D.

Thanks for your swift response. It works:
User posted image
But now I have another dilemma:
The "thing" that emits these particles in my map has a radius of about 1200 units. Needless to say, if I put that radius in the initializer, the sprites will be pretty sparse. What parameter do I have to modify to increase the size of the sprites? Seems like the max number of particles is 5000, but even with that on a radius of 1200 units it's still sparse( plus, not good for the framerate probably).

It's easy to create particle systems that are constrained by a box or by a sphere( there are some initializers built for that), but I'm having a bit of a problem trying to constrain the point of origin to a spherical plane.
User posted image
Essentially I want to create sort of a vortex, but particles also fall down from that plane, twisting around the axis a bit. How can I constrain the point of origin to a random position on a spherical plane?
Also, how do you actually implement a life decay? I think it's an "operator" or something, but whateverr values I put in it, it acts in retarded ways, either spawning all the particles and then stopping or fading a few seconds after.

As an advanced question, does anybody have experience with "control points"? Say I want the particles to flow around an object, I'd need control points right?

Decompilers for the GoldSrc engine are only for inspiration purposes. They don't re-create what you'd see a mapper do in Hammer, instead they carve out the empty space from a huge block.
It's normal to be laggy. It's mostly for you to see how certain entity setups were made.

in Statistics[of TWHL] Post #328404
This was a shower idea.
I am now pissed off. I wrote an entire forum post, it's 03:00 AM and accidentally pressed the back button on my browser. ARGH, you'd think these days the browser would remember what you wrote in a form!

I've been recently playing with nodejs and I slapped together some code for a web scraper.
I targeted the "Members" part of TWHL, and since we have over 6500 members registered, I thought I could infer some data from that. Considering the fact that I'm making consecutive requests at 150ms delay, this should have taken about 100 minutes, yet idk what magical thing happens in my code because it took only about 10 minutes. I can't go under 150ms because after 15-20 records the TWHL.info server gives me a 503 service unavailable.

I've discovered that we have some non-existent members: 1922 2611 5921 5968 5969 5974 5994 5996 6002 6003 6005 6006 6006 6007 6008 6009 6366 6366 6367 6369 6402 6431 (these are IDs). The ban hammer was strong with these ones :)). We have about 1000 banned members.

The statistics are a bit unusual and not what you'd expect because the way I took the data( I used jQuery to build a CSV file), and because I only took it from the "Members" area(for now).

TOPs
(EDIT) This is not really a top. For sure the last result has the maximum metric, but you can guess it's just the code logic that gave this output.

I'm so lazy right now that I'm just going to paste the output of the code I used. Figure for yourself what each top means:

Charts

I used plot.ly for this. Keep in mind the plots represent some summed metrics from members that subscribed in the same year.

Member Registrations by year

Finished Maps contributions by people who signed up the same year

Forum posts contributions by members who signed up the same year

Journal entries by members who signed up the same year

Map Vault comments by members who signed up the same year

Total logins from people who signed up in a given year

Seems like 2004 was a prolific year for TWHL, and its freshly registered members gave the roots for this community.

I want to take more information though. For one thing, I want to make some map rankings and comparisons based on different metrics. I'd also like to explore more what can be done with this data to present it in an interesting fashion. If that's ok with Penguinboy. I don't know if making multiple requests does any damage to the server, it doesn't seem to as it has some rules to protect itself.

I disagree. Source is a better option nowadays unless you really want GoldSrc. Anyway, the core concept of a team mapping project is getting things done before the world ends.

I've never played Final Fantasy either. You guys have to keep team projects like these a bit tidier or something for the members that don't have much time like me. I don't even know how some of you adults from here summon the time to map!

Why don't we make this a community project? Create one big map/mod that has "rooms" (not necessarily enclosed space, see how Talos has its levels), each "room" being a demonstration for one tutorial assigned to somebody( I didn't think this through, but you guys can, I'm in a hurry). Then the video tutorials could be linked to each "room", where the author explained how everything was created.

Sounds a lot like TWHL:Rooms, only for tutorials :).

Everybody is over-reacting with Windows 8. I've used it without it bothering me in the most diverse tasks: gaming, engineering, programming, video and photo editing.
It was just the start menu. That's all.
10 is, for the most part, exactly what we wanted - Win7, but far faster under the bonnet.
I think a lot of people now think in these terms, without realizing what a piece of spyware Windows 10 is. Not that the previous versions didn't use some kind of telemetry, but Windows 10 is off the charts. I'm still considering whether I should upgrade to it or not, although there already guides on turning off most of the telemetry settings(even dedicated programs), not feeling comfy yet.

This is the result of us taking technology for granted. But I guess that's what people too lazy to inform themselves deserve. And it's hard not being skeptical once you realize all this... unless you're a maniac you can't really know everything that's happening with the software you use.

Of course, a question remains: should I care if a robot directly sees my activity on my computer? Should I care if an unknown person could potentially gain access to my files because of all these new data being generated and sent to microsoft servers? I don't know, should I?

I'm just sad thinking of a future where we have completely sacrificed our privacy while glorifying convenience.

Off the shelf: Laravel. It's far too much work to try and maintain your own framework, that's why the last attempt at TWHL4 failed.
Interesting, I've heard about this before, but then the only PHP I've ever done was a simple comment system for a school project back in 2012. I now honestly don't know how to write a line in PHP.
Right now I use Java Spring at work, it's a huge framework for backends. You can literally do anything your ass commands(ex: PDF generation) once you've got data in the controllers. And in many cases you get one-stop solutions on Stackoverflow.

Is that the case too with Laravel? I suppose it runs on an apache server, just like regular php scripts? I see it has a dependency manager, called "Composer", which makes me think of Maven or Gradle.
It's a bit offtopic, but I'm interested. I'd love to pick up a new backend framework if its ecosystem is less constrained by commercial applications ( for Spring, you can use the Eclipse IDE, but it's a bit more shitty than IntelliJ which you have to pay for).

I know this could get boring very fast, but I always wanted to try Half-Life Rally with someone.

Yeah I'm throwing this here since it's apparently not very off-topic.

Still no TWHL tournament moment has ever surpassed this.
That thing is ancient.
If we ever meet I'll force you to eat marinated herring. Then you have my permission to die.
I'm happy with any game. I usually just show up for the banter.
Oh all right. So when do we play some Starcraft 2?

I'd really want to participate in a TWHL project from time to time, I'm really sorry I missed out on so many and will pass this one too, but I just can't find time, even for taking a shit on some days(honestly). Which begs the question Urby: how can a man with a family spare so much of his time for the community?
Is the clock running slower at Greenwich?

I posted this and went for a jog. Something was constantly itching my brain.
Now I know what it was!

The stalkers were a little bit more to the left. In the middle there were just some snipers.

Yeah rufee that's why I'm planning on buying laptop purely as a linux machine, so I don't have to deal with the hassle of dual-booting and what not.
I'm looking for some sturdy 12 inchers or around that, 5-6 year olds or more. The prices are still high for how old they are and I'm very reluctant to buy(at least in my country).
Examples include Lenovo X200, Lenovo X61, dell D620/630, Hp workstations or probooks. I've looked into netbooks as well, as that's what attracts me more but I've figured out that people simply sell those things for much more than they're worth( 80$-100$ for models from 2008-2010? yeah right). For the same money you can get stuff from older generations that, while less power efficient, at least have some computing power.

From DiscoStu's journal, Penguinboy says:
TL;DR at the end
MS are just aggressively pushing their new product so they can try to monetise using their app store and Microsoft account integration, plus they want to avoid people getting "stuck" on an ancient version, like what happened with XP. Take off the tinfoil hat, or just switch to Linux already and stop with the paranoid conspiracy theories.
Have you seen a recent movie, Kingsman Secret Service? (spoilers alert!!) Of course, that is a comedy, but there Valentine offers a free service to all users, which is actually a disguise for a weapon of mass murder with the intent of saving the Earth...
Similarly, a story with the Genisys in the new Terminator movie. An operating system that everyone is hyped about but it's actually malicious.

That is clearly fiction, but how fast can parts of this satire become a fact? Since things that are programmed evolve much quicker than laws can be passed to put in place some reasonable privacy limits, one has to be more prudent with these things. Consider the fact that most of the privacy violating processes happen behind the scene, thus are technicalities which outwit most users.
People tend to reside in on of two opposite opinion camps: the paranoid, and the accepting. I believe we need to analyze the situation on a more profound level, and try to understand the consequences.
What is the consequence of having a corporation creep inside your digital home, little by little? No harms are apparent in the present, but what can it lead to?
I deeply understand that the future only represents an even more connected world, that the dawn of IoT means that devices we couldn't think of having a digital utility will in the near future connect to the internet. Windows might evolve into being a truly universal operating system by then, a digital hub for all of your house( this is quite plausible, they have a stripped down Windows 10 OS for prototyping platforms such as Intel Galileo).

In such a world, you'd be crazy to live by the standards of your grandparents. Companies offering modern services know this, and although humans build corporations, I always had the impression that in a capitalist world they don't give a shit about being human. They will chase profit by any means.

Having at the tip of your finger as much informations and statistics as possible of people will grant future companies the power of fine-tuning their products to a plethora of target audiences. This possible future is an attractor, and people managing big companies will surely gravitate towards ideas, concepts and actions which will increase the profits.

As far as I'm concerned, Windows 10 is a good operating system as long as I disable all the privacy violating crap. You really don't need an OS that creeps so much into your digital home. There are specialized services which can do that for you, such as Facebook. But that is a CHOICE! Operating systems are a necessity, but we see it become a service before our eyes. And if that's how the future is supposed to be, then at least we should know EXACTLY what data is transmitted between our digital home and a corporation.

TL;DR :

Windows 10 is probably a great OS. What is bad is its philosophy of hiding from the unwitting the information it collects and transmits. The user should have complete control and know EXACTLY of what leaves and enters his digital home.

Scott is 8 years old?!

Oh goodness how time flies. He's so lucky to have a paparazzi dad after his butt. He's gonna thank you later (or file privacy complaints :walter:).
