You better not be bullshitting me, and this may have been a recent update by someone mucking around at valve, so unless one of the editors at tf2 saw this when they worked on blueshift or when playing it, and incorporated it into tf2, thats really trippy :P

This is from probably the best place you could buy from in Aus, for decent parts:

Intel Core i7-920 = AU$389
Intel Core i7-950 = AU$697

If you just want an upgrade, don't bother with quad or i7, get a dual core, many applications don't use quad at the moment, my new family/gaming pc runs the Nvidia 260 and the Intel e8500, in my opinion get the e8500, really good part, stock it runs at about 2.8Ghz but can be O/C'd to 4.2! Provided you have good cooling.
If you were to go all out, get the i7-920, I definitely when I build my beast in the near future
I'll post my full pc specs in my next journal

So for ram, definitely upgrade to atleast 2GB of DDR2, if not more, its cheap as chips, the 260 is the best value for money card out now, theres still the 8800 and 9800 series's, which are very cheap now costing less than 125$AU

So there you have it, stick with a 8800, 2gb and the e8500, and your PC will last, and allow you to play the latest games and you won't have to upgrade your mobo (I'm pretty sure, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

BTW, I've never had any trouble with my POS ATi card in my laptop which I use for mapping with Hammer, or am I unaware of the problems because I'm still a n00b at mapping? :P

I was just reading about the cancelled mod, Night Watch
any news on that, like why they broke it off, coz it was looking soo good, and almost finished! and if its going to be brought back to life?
Any interesting history would be cool to hear

and another thing, I was reading about mirrors in mapping, and I was wondering if it is possible to do in HL1, like the way it is done in Deus Ex.
I'm pretty sure I've seen it done with goldsource, and I've heard briefly of the trick in Blue-Shift where the floor is reflective.
My idea is for an interrogation room style mirror, although you would not need to be able to see thru from the other side as it will be destroyed

just a couple of questions about tutorials, where can i find a curved pipe or curved cylinder tutorial, i remember i found one a few weeks ago but lost it =/

I'm so sorry, I havent replied to you in weeks, I bet you thought I stole your info and left.. lol

I've just been realllllly busy with year 12, but I tried the properties you told me today, and now I've got it working, but roughly

the first problem is that otis isn't saying his scripted sentence, OT_ANSWER9 but really thats it actually, I jsut haven;t set the light and sound effects for the scanner, and the keycard is jsut a block at the moment

but that will be sorted out soon

but now I have some info for you! :D
you make a key card disappear by making it a func_wall_toggle entity because when it is targetted, it kills itself, so you don't have to do that ddoor thing! :D

ok its now the weekend!

time to get to work on the level again!

ok now that I can do basic (VERY basic :P) scripting, with barneys, i now have the exact situation i wanna make, so i thought i would explain it here, so i know what to brush up on to make it happen

otis is infront of a security door with retinal scanner

otis says sorry sir you need a security pass (or along those lines)

you go find the security pass

when you walk back to otis, there is a trigger entity infront of him

which triggers him to walk to the retinal scanner, do his animation and hence open the door for you

all your help is appreciated, guys!

thank you! ohh, I had ai scripted, but hl_hotdog told me to change it, i think coz it could have been the problem, aha yep, I'll change that :)

ummmmm none really, at the moment, but there definitely will be soon, I gotta read some more tutorials, on multi_managers, multisource, globals and stuff, coz for the door I want you to need to obtain a security pass before Otis lets you through the door

but yeah, I'm still quite busy with the architecture atm but I've laid out in my mind the ideas for the level, and more to come if people on the forum like this map, so thanks for your help today, and I'll hold you to helping me out later :D

ahhh I've never made a mod before, I'll have to read a bunch of tutorials, and I'll probably stuff it up :P, hmm I'll have to do it over the weekend, ive been snowed over with homework :(

EDIT: hmm just thinking, what programs will I need to make the mod, and what about the SDK?? I've never used it before.

and also, whats a good map decompiling program? I don't really like the one I have, is there a way to extract an RMF file?? the program isn't as good as hammer to describe the entities in a map

Hmm good point, Jeff, when I tick the "predisaster" flag the security guards for example just stand there and dont respond, but in bootcamp the drill sergeants shout at you if you try and talk to them or stand near them, so theres gotta be a way to do it

In my level, the resonance cascade has happened, but it hasnt really hit the section you're in, so the guards are still on their posts and civilised, and the area isnt destroyed.. yet, sooo the guards prety much need the pre disaster script

ahhh I've put "retina" as the action animation and "idle2" as the idle animation, but now hes gone back to doing what he did before, he walks to the scanner and does the retina animation straight away!

ok Otis is standing there waiting for me - he is also unresponsive, but I can push him around, and he doesnt seem to be performing the idle2 animation

I'm using a scripted_sequence, I was using ai_scripted sequence before, but Jeff told me not to

The name of the scripted_sentence is "speech" and the name of the sentence is "!OT_of1a1_ot04"

how to make a retinal scanner scripted sequence, where otis says things that relate to shephard, and uses the retina animation, instead of a barney

buttt he wont say anything, and he starts using the retinal scanner as soon as the map loads, but the door doesnt open, once you walk into the target_once zone, the lights and sounds of the scanner start, and the door opens

I am following the "Creating a Retinal Scanner" by Chris 'autolycus' Bokitch from the VERC, but I am mapping for Opposing Force with the Half-life HD pack and Opposing Force Redux pack.

the situation, properties of my entities and a screenie of my Hammer view are all detailed in my above posts

hmm okay I've changed his name to oscar, changed to a scripted_sequence, and made his idle animation: idle2.

But he doesnt seem to be performing the idle2 animation, and I can still push him around. Also the main problem remains, as soon as the map starts oscar walks over to the retinal scanner and uses it but nothing happens, the retinal scanner and door work, when i walk into the trigger_once zone. Oh and he still doesn't say anything. Annnnd he is unresponsive, I want him to say something like "hey catch me later, I'll buy you a beer" but still not move from his post.

umm what do you mean by load?

If I open otis in HLMV, he has 4 idle animations, idle1, idle2.. etc

monster_otis has the 'pre disaster' flag ticked

func_door has 'name': door1

Oh man, I've tried to finish the scripting today, but with no success!

Depending on the search radius I set the scripted_sequence, otis will either start using the retinal scanner as soon as the map is loaded, or not at all. Not only that, but he does not say anything, when he has a scripted_sentence to make him say "if only we had more soldiers like you". BUT the door, lighting effects work jsut as they should, when i walk into the trigger_once zone. This is all controlled with a multi_manager

I am following the "Creating a Retinal Scanner" by Chris 'autolycus' Bokitch from the VERC, but I am mapping for Opposing Force with the Half-life HD pack and Opposing Force Redux pack.

Is there any chance that the problem could be that I don't have the required sound files in the right directory? Otherwise the problem will probalby just be something small like not filling in a field in the properties window, or doing it wrong, because of being a n00b and there being different file names etc.

If anyone else maps for Opposing Force, their imput would be especially appreciated.
