the only way I know to measure something is using the "info_player_start" entity´s size in the 2D wiew in Quark..

Man, I don't think that QuArK has a grid, even :P
I have QuakeArmyKnife installed on my laptop, but I've never used it, so...

Hmm, also, @abbadon, why Quark? I know it supports Quake, GoldSrc, Source and even other games using idTech 2 and 3 (MoH:AA for example), but seriously? QuArK!? quack! quack!

Yes and no.
Yes, you could make tiny maps if the player size was 1 or 2 units. Man, imagine a 2048^3 unit map, with a 1-unit player xD

And no, because with a 1-grid spacing, you can cut your brushes with a lot of detail. 1 unit is the smallest thing GoldSrc accepts in maps. Anything below that will give some problems :/

Units are just measurements: door height - 96 units; wall height - 128, 192, 240 or 256 units; small crate - 32x32x32 units; wall thickness - 4, 8 or 16 units etc.

Man, finally a nice number. 15 is quite a neat number, actually. It's 1/4 of a minute (in seconds), and so, it's 1/6 of 90°. Man, I can't wait to turn 15.

What? Only 3 GoldSrc maps ever reached even 80%, at least in my situation. Those include: fy_rknsand, de_kobbl and ts_untergrund.
Only of which, ts_untergrund was released as a map.

Or maybe I didn't understand what were you saying :/

I started mapping when I was 12, and even then, things had lots of potential. Though, as my skills improved, I lost potential and ideas (maybe not, who knows)

But then, I have these unfinished WiPs, so that's at least one thing I can work on :)
E.g. Sandstorm, Left4Crabs, dm_/fy_stoned, fy_rknsand, de_kobbl (I'll get paid for that one), de_crater and de_avposs (a.k.a de_stroytheschool). Many more to come.
maybe I should teach you how to use some stuff in a better way.
Well, that would certainly be nice.
I am a (mostly) self-taught mapper, and nobody ever taught me anything. What I know is my own knowledge I gathered, mostly from my experience. Tutorials helped me start, I "brushed" off the rest. xD (get it?)

So, the scars of self-teaching are certainly noticeable in me :)

What v3.0!?

The one I linked was version beta 3 (I think) so that translates to v0.3 in my versioning system. The second picture shows the reboot in v0.001 (pre-alpha 1).

But hey, my school map will certainly be good :)
About the good texturing part, well, I'll try my best and we will see what happens.

It's the grid size:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 etc.

Unfortunately, Crafty doesn't load the textures at all, only the embedded BSP textures. It's a problem, or maybe not a problem, who knows.

Anyway, I got it to a somewhat-OK phase:

Nonono. I only needed to export the textures from CS and do some basic UV-mapping. Then, it would look something like this:

That guy directly ported cs_office into Far Cry. And I'm trying to do the same with de_dust2.

Sadly, the worst part is, exactly, the texturing :o
Standard CS maps refer up to 150 textures, and that means I'll have to apply 150 different materials in 3ds Max, and convert 150 bitmaps either into JPEG or DDS.

Oh and, I'm feeling much better now, and I calmed down :D

Far Cry is for PC! (it wasn't released for Genesis, obviously)
Man, do I hate jokes like this, especially sarcasm. Really, if anybody is willing to communicate with me, exclude any jokes other than memes.

Bruce, the graphics are like this because:
  • Incomplete UV maps
  • Very low res textures = low res shadowmaps
  • Terrible lighting
Dude. It's simply because of the process! BSP gets converted to OBJ, and that is converted into a Far Cry model (untextured, in my case).

Oh you know what? Screw it! I was trying to be nice to everyone, but it probably isn't worth it. I just say "Hey, I'm porting de_dust2 to Far Cry" and you respond with "great graphics, is it for SNES or Mega Drive?". Damn you, man. I might aswell cancel all my WiPs and seriously never finish them. I might even start writing the F word uncensored, I might even start hating you! Stop it.

I had a bad day at school today, that probably explains my reactions :(

Right, one more thing:
I made my school map for fun.
Although, the 7th-grade me still hated school, so I might've had that little handful of hatred back then.

However, since I was going to that school and I still am, it was much safer (and useful) to make an in-game version, instead of blowing it up in real life.

I had made a map of my own school and I'm proud of it :D
And I'm planning to remake it soon.

If it's a well-known school or college, please don't map it. For example, my school doesn't care much about that map because I told my teachers about it. And so, everything went fine in my scenario.

I remember that, before my PC's death in 2014, I had an LCD monitor. Its native resolution was 1440x900.
I still have it today, so I hope I won't need a new one, once I buy parts for my PC :)

I think that 1440x900 is a nice compromise between 720p and 1080p :D
Though, it's not 900p, because that's 1600x900 (I think).

No, it is NOT a camera effect. It is my monitor. I swear, I can see individual pixels on my monitor, and measure their dimensions.

Focus on the number 2. Zoom in in your browser if you need. As you can see, it is made out of green dots, on a black grid. Those green dots are the green sub-pixels, and the red and blue ones are turned off :)
Get it? RGB pixels.

After all, the native resolution is 1280x800.
And, umm, how do I use vis-blockers on an open map? I don't understand this outdoor optimization :(

A GT 740 is good for what I do :D
But not good enough for my future doings, though. That's why I'm going for the RX 460.

But a 3500 GTX? What the hell is that? Unless you meant GTX 1080 (which I'll never have by the way, just never, it's too expensive).

And, you seriously can't see the individual pixels? I can see the black grid between them, especially on the white and green pixels. I'd zoom in more, but my camera isn't a microscope xD
Hey! I actually did that once. I put a microscope on my phone's screen and I saw RGB sub-pixels :D

Now, back on topic:
I'm testing Sven Co-op's capability of huge map support. I'll be making a 8192^3 map, then a 16384^3 map. I hope it compiles XD
My initial map is made out of 2048 triangles, and believe me, the shadows look so cool on it (shadows by terrain).

I will definitely wait, I have lots of patience :)

When I finish 9th grade, it will be a big breakthrough, so I must celebrate it somehow: by building this thing. (it's adjusted to locally available parts)

As a low-spec bottom-spec gamer, I will not leave elementary school, without having built a PC. I must build that PC before high school! :D
I will name it "Iron Wolf".

Also, my cousins from the USA are coming in summer (after 6 long years :D), so it will be an epic wombo combo for me. The best summer in my life.
Every kid in the village will come to my house and celebrate the new PC. There are only 3 kids other than me here, lol. But with my cousins, there will be 6. With me, that number is 7. Oh screw it, I'll call the entire town nearby to celebrate! Just kidding XD

So, this will be a big thing, perhaps one of the biggest in my life. I can't wait. For now, I'll just study and get good grades :)

It looks like it was made with Milkshape, which:
"works on a 17 year old Athlon with 396 MB Ram anda Voodoo3 2000 with 16 MB (yes MB) of GPU RAM..."
I had an SVGA card PC once. It couldn't even run 2D games properly. I doubt it's any better even than a Voodoo 2.
The period was between the death of my PC (R.I.P 2009-2014) and the coming of my laptop (2007-still alive).

Then I couldn't play any games whatsoever, but I survived somehow. The period lasted from 10 days to a month, I think. Or was it the period before I bought the new laptop (which was adopted by my brother)? I don't know :P

Even though I got something better than that PC with an SVGA card, it's still not good enough. I'll build an actual PC in summer (hopefully) and then I'll be making big maps, big time! >:D

It's going to have a lot of tools you will never use, along with a lot of bloat.
Well, I agree with that. I use maybe 20 or more commands/tools (Bevel, Extrude, Boolean, Connect, Tessellate etc.). But also, never say never =)
I might use 3DS Max once for green screen stuff :D
In your case, before 3ds max 2010 or so I believe is going to be missing some functionality
I'd gladly make use of newer programs, but my darn limited hardware doesn't allow me to.

I'm just partially incompatible with you people because I have bottom-end hardware. Because of that, I'll not fit into certain communities.

People have the latest software, I have the older software. You obviously see the problem there.

It will always be like that until I build an actual PC, so please, stop telling me to get newer programs, just stop, because I can't.

I'll see what I can do about Blender and Milkshape, and they're probably small, too. I have 3.96 GB left on my only HDD, so it should install those easily.

About Blender, I will find an older version, as with everything I install :)
E.g. I don't have the latest Sony Vegas, but I have Sony Vegas 11 etc.
if you have trouble with the latest version of Blender, you will have a hard time with 3ds Max (even Maya).
I have no problems with 3ds Max 6 and Max 9. As for Max 2017, for example, I doubt it would launch xD

Even if I could hit you with the stock, I wouldn't, because:
1. It's insanely immoral and useless
2. Respect for the elderly (you're 1 of them)
3. I have no intention to damage/hurt/kill anyone
4. It's a terrible sin in my religion
5. I'd break the law

I don't know, Max just seems so über and epic compared to some stuff. Of course, I'd love to install Blender, but my iGPU doesn't support OpenGL 2.1. I wish Blender was in DirectX 9 or 10.

Well, when I first started Milkshape, I had no idea how to use it.
3 months later, when I was determined to make a model, I found a tutorial on TWHL, for 3ds Max.

Now, I don't have time to learn the basic controls of other programs because of school :P
3DSMax is 100 times more difficult to use than MS3D, BTW... :roll:
Seriously, do I look like I care? My avatar says it all.

3ds Max is quite superior to Milkshape, but thanks for mentioning the 3ds Max -> Milkshape part =)
Max needs plugins to export and import SMDs, while Milkshape supports it natively. Good idea =D

But my laptop doesn't meet the sys. req. for Blender. I can't get used to Milkshape's controls, too. So, I'll use 3ds Max.
And, hell no, I can't make a better motorbike in a modelling program, because I simply don't have enough experience in the design process.

Well, I'll see about that. I could cut out a cylinder, and cut it into sections, and then do the curves :)

Sadly, that's pretty much impossible. In GoldSRC, vehicles and func_trains/tracktrains don't respawn at all, until the entire map/server is restarted :P

That's just how it is, only mods could change that.

See, I normally increase the contrast, and then add a bit of brightness, when it comes to that. My monitor settings (and in-game) are definitely different than yours, so...

I've noticed 1 thing in particular. TWHL's colour scheme is very bright with little contrast.
Contradictory, my screenshots are somewhat dark. Try viewing the screenshots in full-screen mode, or just zoom in, so your eyes can adjust to the darkness.

I've actually experienced that IRL multiple times =P
I got this idea an hour ago when I got out of my room (and it's night a.t.m.) and it was very dark. I still saw everything.
I went to the bathroom, turned on the lights [...] and then came out, 30 minutes later. I couldn't see anything after switching off the lights!

I stood in the hall for 1 minute, and shortly, I saw the walls again, then the carpet on the floor and so on.
But meh, this probably won't work with this exact scenario =(

Hehe, I normally set texreflectscale to 0.9, but if I need more light, I will get more light!
