On the other hand this will probably create a number of arrogant little snobs who think that because they can use this editor, they're "pro" mappers, but what are you gonna' do! I don't have anything against it really. Seems to be a much better effort than the Alien Swarm tileset editor... or Alien Swarm in general, seeing as it's all but dead right now.

How many of you were waiting on Black Mesa? A mod that is essentially a graphical update to Half-Life: Source. Just saying...
Black Mesa also brings many years of gameplay updates (physics puzzles, enhanced AI etc.) that Half-Life 2 and it's episodes have conjured up, but your point remains. ;>
Nuke, Train and Office are all fairly clearly unfinished. They have never been included in the "test weeks" where specific elements are tested on all of Valve's servers for the week. Last week was cs_italy 24/7. Now it's the two ar_maps.
Didn't know about those maps and the test weeks, but I'm not sure when it comes for Office. I can't tell if they're going for that sparse 'boring work environment' look, or if it is just in fact heavily WIP. I feel like Valve have been pretty inconsistent with their worlds lately. L4D2 feels incredibly uninspired and rushed compared to, say, Portal 2, or even L4D1, so I try not to make positive assumptions about them on that side of things these days.

I want more content, more than anything. Keep in mind I'm not one of the people wanting drastic changes, or strictly 1.6 gameplay, but I'd like the 'global' part of Global Offensive to be more apparent. More Eastern and European locales and operations, stuff like that. The Deleted Scenes campaign actually did that pretty well, despite the very average game attached to it.

Gah, I write too much.

I hope they actually work on all the maps the same way they have Italy and Aztec. Nuke and Train in particular look terrible. Porting the CS:S maps, adding some thick fog and some brown/desaturated colour correction is hardly the recipe for a new game.

The rest is looking pretty damn nice, I just hope they're consistent.

Then Batman: Arkham City.

Casually, I've just been messing around in Serious Sam TSE HD with Ant again, and occasionally breaking the levels.

The recent media is a huge improvement. Some of the current maps in the beta are hideous, so I'm assuming (or hoping) they're early versions and will eventually meet the standards of that lake map. Global shadow mapping too, I love it.

Now give me a beta key, Valve!

BFE is fun, but it suffers from some dumb 'modernizations' that make kind of go against it's nature as an old-school shooter. Things like an instant take-down button, iron-sights, a 3-4 hour tutorial phase, low enemy count, horribly small FOV and really bad melee weapon that has nothing on the chainsaw.

Played it co-op with Ant and enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but it's just nowhere as good as the originals I think. :<

Doodle:

Your VMT should be something like this:
"Refract"
{
"$refracttinttexture" "blah/tinttexture"
"$normalmap" "blah/normalmap"
"$surfaceprop" "glass"
"$refractamount" ".02"
"$bluramount" "5"
"$envmap" "env_cubemap"
"$envmapcontrast" "1"
"$envmapsaturation" "0.5"
"$envmaptint" "[.8 .8 .8]"
"<dx90"
{
"$fallbackmaterial" "blah/texturename_dx8"
}
}
Made these textures like that a while ago. You'll want to tweak the refract amount and envmap brightness to your liking. For reference, the textures look like this outside of the game.

Never use texlights in Source. Ever.
They have their uses! Valve used them to simulate sunlight filtering in through windows in some warehouse sections of Half-Life 2. Also all the thin skirting lights in Portal.

I used them for lava once in a certain map that shall not be named.

I've played with this idea before. It's pretty simple in Source to use trigger_vphysics_motion to simulate air resistance and the ground moving below you. Unfortunately the entity doesn't exist in MP, and trigger_push doesn't do a very good job (ignores some physics classes like ragdolls and debris).

I was so short on ammo in one segment that I had to resort to throwing knives against some of those little mole rat lurkers that hide in burrows. Got slaughtered a few times, but damn it felt good once I nailed them all. I think they were my favourite weapon during the stealthier segments.

I hope Game World find a way to continue the STALKER IP, but I'm lucky I still have the last two games to get through. I also got a quick shop in at GSC's online store before they run out of stock. Looking forward to my STALKER patches. :>

Looks like Defcon.
Saw that Metro 2033 was on sale for five bucks so I decided to give it a go. I've not gotten very far, but there were some pretty harrowing moments so far already. It's really too bad that they continuously kill the immersion, I wish they had gone the Half-life/Amnesia route and not taken any jumps in the story because otherwise the world feels very authentic and deep. Also the depth of field is sickeningly low, and the game seems to reset it's configuration files every time you launch it. Shame, shame!
I was really impressed by a lot of Metro 2033. Got it on the sale as well.

Visually it's very, very nice at times but I totally agree about the immersion-breaking loading screens and "time passes..." copout.
Combat leaves quite a lot to be desired as well, but the atmosphere of the world is palpable.
Loved Metro 2033. I thought the combat was suitably rugged and challenging. It really feels like all your (and the enemies) weapons are just barely held together, making for a brutal, tooth and nail sort of affair. Those library creatures too... oh my god. Can't wait for the sequel.

Most recent game I've played is STALKER. I can't believe I got this game so wrong the first time I played it. The gunplay probably turns most people away, but once you start building up a decent arsenal, and gather some artifacts, you're treated to one of the most deep, dangerous and atmospheric RPGs ever. Very unlike typical western RPG games, and sadly buggy as hell. Some mods help, but it still needed a more complete build. Quite sad that GSC Game World has shut it's doors.

You have to play the other games to play the newest games. Thats like playing Half Life 2: Episode 2 without playing Half Life 2.
Not really, these games are fairly standalone. I'd imagine you won't get some of the lore and references, but there's not really a continous story being told with each game.

I'll give it a shot when it's cheap, but if it's anything like Oblivion and Fallout 3, I probably wouldn't enjoy it. Those RPGs are way too aimless and clumsy for me. Infinite freedom just means infinite distractions instead of an engaging, well-paced adventure.

I'd say if people were upset about anything, it's the way you said it, not what you said.

I remember that update, and just how broken the SDK was. It had been weeks without an update, but the SDK was only broken for certain games and certain setups, and there were workarounds. Every time the SDK breaks the rage flares up again, you were just late to the point. You missed the "rage party".

Read this thread back and tell me just how mad people are about the SDK. Also tell me just how many people are rolling over and blindly believing Dimbark.

Apart from a little spam and some childish behaviour, Dimbark is doing nothing really wrong. There's one or two users here who continually pick on him and try to get him banned every time he posts. As far as I'm concerned they're more likely to get banned, and it should be no surprise why.

This is a place of many different, strong opinions, and we try to let them all slide, but there's a huge difference from being opinionated and simply picking on other users. Telling someone to shut it because of some spammy behaviour is one thing, trying to get him banned and posting harsh comments simply because you don't like him is another thing entirely.

Cut it out. You guys know who you are.

Good seeing a proper action film that (some explosions aside) feels real, and isn't so reliant on CGI. Also Jean Reno, fuck yeah.

Don't know what to think about this one. Lynch just loves confusing the hell out of his audience. It's even more confusing considering the first two-thirds of the film are pretty coherent before he drops the what-the-hell moments on you and you walk away dumbstruck.

Exactly what Archie and Captain Terror said. This is the way we've always judged the two engines together. If you don't trust us to be fair about it, I'm sorry.

Source will always have an upper-hand over Goldsource, it's just a superior engine, but we account for this. There's been plenty of times when Goldsource entries have won out over Source entries, because they were just damn good entries.

This competition is purely about the texture pack. How cleverly you use it, and how far you can take it. Sounds and models don't really matter, we're not stopping you from using them. We aren't allowing new ones because that would take the focus away from the textures, which is what everyone should be concentrating on.

Future texture pack competitions will be the same, but maybe with a few more textures than this, and less generic themes.

ANY custom models, sounds, textures, sprites, or skies will get you disqualified. Default skies, sounds, models and sprites are fine, but remember they're not what we're judging. Default textures are not okay, as that would go against the point of the competition. Just the compo texture pack and any necessary tool textures.

Please don't ask us to make it any clearer. :<
They're being judged seperately?
Judged together, but porting HL2 content over to HL1 would mean it's custom, as it's not part of the default stuff for that engine.

User posted image
I'm working on a new water texture and maybe a couple of extras, but I think this is a pretty good, slightly broad industrial set for the competition. The GldSrc ones are mostly 256x256, and in Source they're mostly 1024x1024 and include normal maps. Everything should be ready to go up tomorrow.
Personally, I think we should do 1024^3 first to give some time to deal with textures for the following compo.
I think we'll go for that idea for the very next compo, and definitely do this one again some time with a new theme.
