I just sent an angry response to Steam, who are now saying that I cannot play my copy of HL2 as I entered in the same CD code registered in my previous account.

To whom it may concern,



First of all, Steam, the code I entered in my "ree_ko" account IS from my retail HL2 Box. It's MY game - it belongs to ME, nobody else. I had to register a new account with Steam again as I lost my previous log in details. So basically, you are preventing me from playing my own game which costs a lot of money - this is bloody unbelievable. My game which is sitting here in it's case might as well just be a piece of expensive junk.



Either allow me to play my own game or refund the money so I can buy a new copy and type in the new code. Failing that, I'll send you the bloody game so you can see with your own eyes that it belongs to me. It's as simple as that. I'm sick of this nonsense. Steam has ruined a lot of games on the market. All it has done is add beurocracy to entertainment - and that's not very fun, is it?

If you're using the same key on a new user how are they supposed to distinguish you from a cd-key thief? Their actions are justified in my opinion, and i'm sure their are steps you can take with them to recover your other account. It's a pain, but it's all that can really be done by Valve to prevent piracy.

A 'nice' message asking them what you need to do would've been more appropriate, they'll obviously need to see some proof to sort it out. Now granted i don't know all the info, i could be missing something. However, like it or not, Steam and programs like it are the future of game management.

Maybe if you hadn't been such a dumbass and forgot your account details you'd be able to play your game. That's like losing your car keys, then complaining to the makers of the car that you've got a brand new car that you can't drive, demanding a refund. Think, man, think.

You don't address them as "Steam", Steam is the product. You address them as "Valve".

But I noticed that every once in a while, randomly, steam pretends that I don't own the games in my game list, and asks me to pay for them.

Logging off and logging back in fixes it, but it's a real pain.

Anyone know what this is?

Yeah, that's a common and well-documented bug. I don't think they know how to fix it.

My only beef with Steam is the fact that Episode One is SO FUCKING UNSTABLE.

Steam is fine, and a brilliant program, not only on paper, but in practice too. You'd miss it if it was gone.

When I launch Steam my total memory usage jumps from 200/512MB to 350/512MB. That's worse than Firefox (which I uninstalled).

You know it. The only time I use IE7 is for Windows Update.

Heh, Steam uses only about 1/6 what Firefox does (on my comp). And I can run both smoothly (usually).

Yup, I'd kill myself if I lost my Steam password and forgot about the "Forgot Password?" function.

Steam is nothing special. I'd much rather prefer individual games. It was supposed to be this release platform for "episodic gaming" but now that that idea's gone down the shitter (2 years for Episode Two? omg fu fgts) it's mostly just an annoying menu you have to open to play your games. It's a bother, honestly. There's absolutely no use for it.

Dave, you probably dont have enough swapspace and hard memory in your computer, and its probably quite slow too.

Hum, btw, can I play a game on steam without logging in? Or do i have to have an always-on Internet Connection to play Half-Life Singleplayer?

Steam says you can go in offline mode, but it REALLY doesnt work like that.

Steam using 150MB is still a fact, whether or not my computer is "quite slow".

It uses about 5-15mb to idle, which is just fine.

I CONSTANTLY have Steam and Firefox open. Not to mention Trillian, Windows media player, Hammer... With all that open i only use 8% of my computer.
(my RAM usage idles at 48% but that's Vista for ya)
Steam REALLY isnt all that bad, but Valve really could try to fix the offline mode deal.

On the topic of updates, it sure works better than looking for those big .exe files for the WON version.
BUT, they should change it so you decide when to install them, just like Windows does. I mean, I'm certainly not the only one who has been unable to map in Hammer4 because of some senseless automatic update...

The best thing about Steam are new releases of old games. It's a pretty good digital distribution system all in all. Anyone here who doesn't own Deus Ex needs to launch Steam and buy it now asap.

Shitty old 40GB Maxtor drive

That is about equal to your setup as far as processing power goes, infact yours is probably slightly faster than my old setup. And I was using this when Steam was in it's infancy and full of bugs, yet it still ran flawlessly with no lag.

I love Steam.

The problem is, you don't really know if those updates are going to be useful (like the one that finally showed models and displacements in the 2D views when selected) or if they will mean trouble (Hammer crashing when introducing certain props and models into the map, or opening a map that had those models).

Steam is fine, if you want to play over the net, really good for internet, or buying games in the computer, something I'll never do. Otherwise I thinks it's more harmful then good, even if it mostly doesn't cause problems if it on some rare occations cause for a small part of people problems then it is harmful. It can cause problems that wouldn't accure without it. I myself have plenty of problems with it, and it's not because I didn't install it correctly, thats nearly impossible to do.

Steam is both good and bad. The good this is that you can buy the game online and don't have to wait more than it takes to download it, to play it.

The bad this is that it kinda sucks. A big bag of bugs AND it's unstable!

And they are rather wierd. My brother used custom skins (back in the days those counted as cheats) so he was banned from the HL1 engine games, and 14 other games wich don't use the HL1 engine and that he doesn't even own!

So he sent them a letter asking why the hell they banned him from all of those games and he doesn't own more than 2 or 3 of them. Then they deleted his account! Wich means that they stole a whole lot of money from the little guy. HL 2, CS:s, episode one, HLS and so on. He'd bought like 15 games and they just took 'em away, that's pretty nastly done. Thet are bastards. Death to Valve!

I'm sure moar and more alternatives will pop up due to the success of steam. I guess the best part of Steam and digital distribution is that more money goes to the developers instead of greedy distributors (not in the case of EA Link, mind you). I think Valve takes around half of what "physical" distributors take.

Look, this is really frustrating.

I own a copy of HL2 that I cannot play because the CD Key is registered to my old Jahzel account - an account in which I lost it's details due to everything being wiped off my computer a while ago. I did know this information - years ago - it got lost, lots of things get lost in my room.

So it's an annoying problem indeed. I tried entering the CD code in with the newer Jzel account and it says I'm entering a duplicate code for another account. I try setting up a new account and it tells me the same.

And yet, I remember being able to play the game on two seperate accounts without such problems.

I'm so sick of Steam, I'm sick of it's stupid sett ups, rules and regulations, format everything. Bottom line: These bastards have ruined HL, they ruined everything. I hate their stupid guts, I dont care how great you guys think they are - they fucked everything up for me - I can no longer play my onw stupid game on my new laptop I specifically bought with my own damn money to be able to play.

They can have their stupid fucking expensive HL2 game back, I no longer want it. There's no point in me having it - I dont have alot of money to spend on new copies of already existing games. So I wont, it's a simple as that. I missed out on the HL2 experience - and so that's me finished with it.

I'm seriously just gonna throw the game in the bin. End of.
