My map suddenly showed increased vis compile times by a huge amount. Last thing I did was add a few detailed brushes, about 100 polygons. Does this explain the fact that vis went from 5 seconds to 40?

Yeah, that'd do it. Make sure to func_wall complicated brushwork so they don't create an ungodly amount of visleaves on compile time, especially if the brushes have that many faces. (Just be sure there's some non-entity brushwork between them and the void)

func_wall anything that's an odd angle or intersects base geometry too much

Better yet, get VHLT and func_detail your brushwork instead of func_walling it.
