We need a model download section, like the map vault. (Model Vault)

I want to see what you people can do :D

This is exactly the same thing as the "Prefab section" and the "wad section." If you want those files, go get them from somewhere else.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to start getting more people into TWHL, get ready for HL2 and get some good modellers in here.
If it shows promise (liek if there's enough people willing to start submitting - and I don't mean a shitty cube textured with a HL television tex) then I'll be happy to pay for some server space.
It can't help to have your finger in every pie, and modelling is now such a major part of HL and HL2 mapping it would be a shame to pass it by.

I know enough decent modellers to get them to submit their stuff here, but I think just a combined database of all teh models out there, just organised so that mappers can come here first without having to search throughout google to find a single model, and then having to repeat teh whoel process when teh ywant anotehr one.

I think it would bring more peopel to TWHL, could even have a tutorial section, or links to modelling tutorials and resources.

But it's all just more work, and I can appreciate why it's a pain in the ass to do, but if you're willing to think about it, I'm willing to cough up some cash for server space.

If atom isn't even posting the compo results, why in his right mind would he put a models section in?

oh I know, but then again nothing is too hard if you put your mind to it.
don't speak for atom because who knows, maybe someone will agree with me that TWHL could expand furtehr and reach even more people.
there is not 1 comprehensive model database for all teh free models made by people.
I'm sure modellers would like a place for tehir stuff to be released and rated etc.
there's a number of forums and such.
but the problem is always space, teh way TWHL does the maps is great, you can submit it and have otehrs work on it. that's a fantastic idea, and could be used greatly with models.
it's just a matter of building up a big enough area of people to want to come and talk about/help each out.

it's a long way from being a finalised idea, but i believe that it could work. even if it was a vault of models organised into categories such as prefabland (but not prefabs, as that is taking the piss)
models are so useful it would be a shame to overlook this opportunity, and my offer still stands, i'm willing to put in the cash for this,
i think it will bring in a lot more people to TWHL.

You can upload models to http://hl-improvement.com/forums
You must be a member to download, upload, and view some of the forums. And the models have to be improvements, or good quality replacements, or just good quality models made from scratch. But they have to be good.

You know, you admins on TWHL should ask atom for a little more power, like posting compos faster with the actually active people....... That would own. He would give restrictions like, "dont make more pages" and "if you do this, IM BANNING YOU FOR ALL ETERNITY IN THE LOWEST FIRY PIT OF HELL.".......... =)

--PS Ive been banned from a CS server before =) I got banished to CS hell, and, I defeated satan, and every demon down there with a peaut, a thimble, and a bag of potatoe chips.

bollox, that site is HL only, and TWHL is moving in many directions at the moment, there's alot of cs mappers coming here for advice and sh*t, so why not a model section too. i just like teh idea of having a worldwide database..
Posted 19 years ago2004-09-29 07:28:33 UTC Post #62890
Ok....hands up who can model good enough to require a vault to show off their work? Now, hands up who can't. Please wait patiently while I count the hands...
Posted 19 years ago2004-09-29 09:32:23 UTC Post #62904
Ok hands up who is totally unable to recognise and embrace change. HL will be more than just cleevr tricks in Hammer, it will involve an insane amount of models, why not start it going now and have a reasonably able site/database that supports modelling, where peopel taht model can get suggestions from mappers, and mappers can request new models to use in their projects.

Not such a dumb idea when you actually think about it, instead of blowing it off.
Posted 19 years ago2004-09-29 11:05:22 UTC Post #62920
so remind me again the point of making our own model database when its entirley possible to upload them to other places, with much bigger model databases than we could ever hope to achieve? think outside the box. think outside TWHL.
Posted 19 years ago2004-09-29 11:30:06 UTC Post #62930
Because you need to sign up to a whole new set of sh*t, and that's mainly halflife models, and are those sites going to last forever with all their outdated models?

woudl it be a good idea to understand why i said what i said in my previous post?

would it even be worthwhile to continue this considering alot of people are, for some unknown reason, opposed to this idea (which isn't mine btw), even though it's a good idea.
just because you don't use models, doesn't mean others don't.

and i generally mean a kind of modelling section.

hey, i even offered to pay for it, twice...
Posted 19 years ago2004-09-29 11:46:17 UTC Post #62934
why would they be outdated? why cant you think outside counter strike? why do you think i dont use models?

yeah man =).... Everyone would start making ACTUALLY UNDERSTANDABLE model tuts, and then compos will be like ".....". Like you know the starwars compo entry? He could replace the crap job (no offense) with those star destroyers, with a MODEL version, that could have alll the curves, bends, and detail that make model using awsome. model, model, model section! model, cheese (mmm), model section!

Frankly with the site in it's current state, adding extra things would be the most foolish thing to do. Wouldn't the most logical thing to do is to try and salvage the site and fix it up and not try 20 Million new things? I couldn't give an arse about a model download section, it's quite easy to find them anywhere. Remember folks it all lies in Atom's hands.

What's teh matter guys? don't you want more peopel to join, and to have a bigger collection of mappers/associated artists all under one roof, I don't think I know a site as user friendly as TWHL, all I'm trying to say is, it'd be great to have a section for peopel to submit things for others to rate and use, it'd be great for mod making, you could get your zombie's modelled and skinned.

And I never said I menat models for CS, I said alot of CS mappers are coming in, and CS uses more models than most mods, except HI, that just takes the piss, but teh maps look great for it.

And HL2 is coming out, so models will play a big part in mapping from now on.

Also I think you're being a bit closed minded about this whole thing, what's teh big deal?

And what's so wrong with TWHL at the moment, taht needs seriosu reform?

You mean all teh newbies who are trying to learn, while elitist snobs act liek teh newbies are invading their home, when all tehy are doing is trying to learn (albeit not thru tutorials.. =/ ).

So I dunno dude, I think it's a good idea, but obviously you have no vision.

Peace and Love, what does it take you to realise. Atom isn't even posting the compo results, although he has them. What in your strange mind makes you think he will make a model section?

I'm worried this site will try so many new things and wont do any of them particularly well.

There are more than enough places to show off modeling abilities and the rest. Submit them there. Do you know what I see with the introduction of new space to store things? "Join, Dump And Leave" people. If you're that desperate to show off your modelling abilities then either submit it to a dedicated modelling site or upload them to some webspace. Post a link in the forums and voila!

Exactly right.

TWHL is for mapping. Whilst models are somewhat of a part in mapping, it isn't what this site was originally intended for. If we were going to make things like that, then why don't we add a whole lot of stuff while we are at it. Prefab Section! Model Section! Texture Section! Why not? I'll tell you why. This site IS NOT a prefab, model, or texture site. It is a site to show off your maps, and help people trying to make their maps.

But seeign as you gusy don't really seem up for it I'll buy some space and set up a Model Database for people to use as they please, and maybe it can be linked to TWHL

Apart from Prop Models, I can't see how they would help. I would prefer to see originality than dozens of maps with identical models.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-01 06:06:07 UTC Post #63332
A database would have more than 5 models, and it would be useful to have a set amount of models for people taht don't model themselves, and that's what I'm talkign about, I don't mean player models or weapon models, mainly just models for use as detail, and if you have enough random detail models you'll never notice taht a lot of people are using them.

And if it's your map, you release your map with teh models first, then let the public have them.

A model dosn't make a map orignninal or not, it merely adds to it's charm. And if you had a good database, it would encourage people to talk about them, you could get people to request models etc.

anyway, I already said I would do this myself, as the gusy here aren';t interested.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-01 06:23:54 UTC Post #63337
Then do so. I think learning to map properly is more important than anything else. Imagine the new problems that would come about:

"I can't use [this model] and I have [random error from Hammer]!"

Sound like fun to you?

there's about 4 ways to insert a standard detailed model.

and there's a tutorial, and I think most people here knwo how to use a model.

what's the deal with teh useless spam in threads I post in steve, or is it just coincedence..
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-01 16:35:07 UTC Post #63459
that wasnt spam. that was a point you should be thinking about.

weve already explained why it would be pointless to have a model vault; all the models we need can be found at other sites that are solely used for model hosting.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-01 16:44:00 UTC Post #63468
what sites? the one dated half-life site? that has got pretty much HL1 player models and some HL player skins.

That site was pretty bad, I was saying that all teh good models should be brought under one roof, so that they could be picked by mappers who need somethign specific.

anyway, I already said I'd do it, and I also said I was bored of this thread.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-01 16:47:08 UTC Post #63470
wow, that is immature. you changed your av to insult me just because im not agreeing that resident evil is a good film, and that twhl doesnt neeed a model vault. obviously, since oyur just talking about one site, you havent looked very hard.

"bring them all under one roof"? that would involve searching through veery hl, cs and other mods model sites (and believe me, there are hundreds) and taking the itme to download every model and decide if its good enough to go into a new database, which also involes getting permission for the model to be submitted to a new database. if you feel your up to it...
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-01 16:53:08 UTC Post #63474
Haha, you're a funny little guy aintcha, I changed my av coz you're going out of teh way to spam bs after every post I make, and if you're just posting, then you got a subconscious issue, I'd see a shrink.

Permission, it's a simple process, email: want people to see your work?
re: yes

there aren't hundreds, taht you can just google for.

they need a site called halflifemodmodels etc w/e

and i don't care that you dislike res evil, that's another thread so why bring it up here? if you're just posting happily and not trying to piss me off?

i said :
