How desperate are you peeps for a new TWHL compo? I'm currently sitting on a new compo (one that I think is quite good), but I've also got stuff like TWHL3 Development happening.

As well as this, Alex hasn't showed me how to do compos yet.

I'm heading away on holidays on Sunday/Monday for a week or so: perhaps we should wait until February? It's your choice.

I really don't care, but I don't see any harm in releasing the brief in the compo thread early--who cares if the official brief isn't up. If nothing else, it gives everybody more time and less excuse not to enter :)
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-10 22:58:14 UTC Post #209272
That's what I was thinking. That or just code up a seperate page, like Trapt did.

Code up a quick mock up page until the official brief goes up. And make a news post.

Because my ideas are the best.

...let's hope the official brief is up before the compo finishes tho? ;D

Even if it isn't, it'll be Sasha's problem. :P

This is gonna be open to both Goldsource and Source and it's a pretty damn good compo. Heck, it's one I'd even enter, but alas...

I want to see a big turn-out here, folks.

If it goes up, I'm in. It'd be the first competition I compete in :)

Can we get a hint as to what your idea is? And whether or not it's Source, HL1, or both? :D
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-11 02:44:43 UTC Post #209283
iirs it's both and its based entirely on 'mapping' (thats what Ant said, hehe)

Yeah, it's a mapping based compo.

Oops! Missed that :D

So is this a "Go!" or a "Hold on a sec"?

Methinks we'll wait till I get back from vacation: I've been absolutely buggered with work these last few days, I've only been arsed enough to do some news posts for Sliced Gaming, let along get a compo up and running.

Sorry folks, but you can rest assured that I do have a compo up my sleeve, ready for when I return.

Ok, the theme seems interesting and my latest water-ripple effects will come in handy :D
Even though it might seem Source has an advantage with reflecting/refracting water, the limitations of "only one water plane per VIS leaf" will make me choose HL1 for this. That, and the easier process of creating materials, scroll textures etc. On the other hand, Source let's you create cubemapped surfaces for a wet-look effect...

Ok guys, we've kinda gone all out with this compo. For a start, custom content for both engines is now allowed, but you can't add any new coding.

Secondly, pay heed to this:
All maps submitted must include a readme file describing which game it is for. If hosting your map remotely and uploading a link with the form, this readme must be included with the actual map
If you don't include a readme, then you will be disqualified. Yes, disqualified. We've extended the deadline for the compo as well, as we believe it's a fun one that everyone can participate in. As mentioned in the news article, if we get a poor turnout, we will suspend compos until TWHL3 is ready to roll, and that won't be for a while.

Get mapping!

Posted 13 years ago2007-01-25 21:16:23 UTC Post #210574
btw what do you mean a poor turnout, wasn't their like 9 peeps who applied for the previous one :S

Thats good for a competition with no prize, and secondly maybe peeps would be more likely to enter if the people who didn't make the top 3 got a mention at the end, as I'm sure it would be very disappointing to spend all that effort and then get no mention at all
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-25 22:59:58 UTC Post #210578
Based on history, the last few compos have had poor turnouts.

I don't really see how you can expect many people to get motivated when there is so little you can actually do with the water in both Source and GoldSrc. I predict a lot of very similiar entries, or very little entries at all.

Dude, you can use water as a theme. You don't have to create a stunning entity map if you don't want to, this is purely a mapping based compo.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-26 00:35:38 UTC Post #210587
All you're going to see then is water in different locations. And in that case, it's the locations you will be judging, instead of what you should be focusing on - the water. You may aswell have said "Map a location and put some water in".
Strider StriderTuned to a dead channel.
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-26 00:39:06 UTC Post #210588
sigh

You can easily accentuate the water element in whatever locale you've chosen. Surely the mappers here are creative enough to figure something out.

I personally consider this to be similar to the glass compo. Just use your damn imaginations.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-26 00:45:18 UTC Post #210589
Well unfortunately, the GldSrc and Source engines limit the imagination to flat planes of water, and rising water. I can see it now, oh the possibilities.
Strider StriderTuned to a dead channel.
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-26 00:50:00 UTC Post #210590
Strideh my dear boy, if you're gonna bitch then don't enter.

Glass didn't exactly a huge amount of possibilities either, considering that basically all you could do with it was make it transparent and make it shatterable, yet we had a wide range of entries.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-26 00:55:44 UTC Post #210591
Don't worry, unless i can think of something original the engine can actually pull off, i won't be entering. Glass had FAR more possibility seeing as you could actually make it to any shape, and utilise rotating/moving entities etc.

Anyway, my point here is not to bitch, i'm simply saying that i do not see how you can expect many entries considering the lack of options. Shutting down competitions if this turns out bad almost seems like you want to stop doing them. If you gave the same ultimatum with a competition with greater option, than i'd understand that users just don't care about compos anymore.

Some words to trigger your imagination:

waterfalls
fountains
bath spa
aquapark
ripples
aquarium
ocean
ice? I don't know if solid water fits the rules
rainstorm
flood

etc
etc
Posted 13 years ago2007-01-26 01:12:33 UTC Post #210593
If all these entries turn out to be are maps with some water in them, then i won't be itching for the results. I can imagine the reviews:

-Used rain imaginatively.. you can see it!
-Has a spa in it, oh joy!

Any one of us can make a map featuring water/rain just by looking at TWHL's tutorials, there's nothing that will set entries apart other than the actual location the water is set in (in which case the compo may as well have been based on 'interesting locations').

Anyway, i've made my point, so i'll just see where this ends up, i'm leaning towards "few entries as usual and the possible cancellation of competitions".

We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin' rain... and big ol' fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath.

Strider has a point but limits are a good thing, means people can think of unique ways to overcome their problems and make something original.

I predict Water Temple from Zelda, Wet-Dry World from Mario, giant toilets, swimming pool set in Greek mythology etc...Oh and I also bet people will make use of rising water.

After you know you've covered every base possible, some asswipe will rain on your parade.
Continuing to debate with a peon, over something you have decided is going to happen is only bringing the moral down. Stop debating with Strider, and let him simmer in his own juices.
Haha, you don't seriously think Ant would let anything such as my comments affect him, do you? There is no anger between us, i was simply expressing my beliefs, Ant isn't so dumb as to think i'm attacking him. And you can't be so senile that you actually think that, or think that anyone would need your 'wise words of encouragement' over someone elses thoughts. We can have a discussion, can't we?
