Hmm, What about origin brushes, are those like skybox brushes, unlimited?

for fucks sake, just use your brain. we all know the spirit this compo is run in, and there's absolutely no way to police if anyone is cheating, so just do whatever you want.

of course fucking origin brushes don't count!

Let's just keep this about visuals for once. I'd like to make mine with Ep2 assets and obviously i don't have access to those assets if i was to make a deathmatch map.

Im sure we'll eventually do the 1024³ compo as well. We can go all out on gameplay on that one so it does'nt hurt if we just focus on visuals for the currect compo for once.

Sometimes you just want to make cool stuff and not focus on gameplay. This compo is great for such an opportunity.

It should be about both visuals and gameplay, that's the challenge.

edit: The Mighty Atom, I have to disagree, this is a terrible opportunity to focus on visuals. If anything this one should be about gameplay, and the 1024^3 should be about visuals, but I still think we should judge by both visuals and gameplay, I mean just from looking at the screen shots of course.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-28 12:39:52 UTC Post #292606
I really don't know how you can hope to make anything with good gameplay using only 30 brushes, and then vote on the gameplay using only screenshots.

The point of the competition was from the start to use the brushes in creative ways - to come up with something visually great with limited resources. That's the challenge.

The 1024 compo, which we will definitely use sometime soon, is much more suitable for a gameplay challenge.

isn't that the point of a challenge? Mapcore did it. That awesome cube map was a tf2 capture the flag map!

I voted for 1024 too but this one is a little more interesting. And 30 is much better than 20.

I was going to say shouldn't vissible brush entities count but not ones like trigger_push or anything because they don't contribute to the visible experience. Either way guess it doesn't matter.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-28 16:05:51 UTC Post #292614
A question to the admins, Is the limit to the brushes exactly 30 and if we go above we get disqualified, or is it around 30, so we can go 1 brush below or 2 brushes above? I ask since i have 29 solid brushes, but 6 of them are just to seal the world (5 sky brushes and 1 for the floor) and then I have about 5-7 brushes tied to entities, and I have like 5 point entities (lights and some barely visible sprites to enhance lighting). Technically I should be spot on the limit, but what If I end up with like 31?

Can I make map for a mod? I have everything set up on team fotress clasic.

Also can it be a video instead of final screenshots? feels it would capture my map better. It will be one scene/room/place but best shown from all levels of the room like a climbing progress. :S

Would still like to add:
-smoke sprites to simulate fueling process
-retexturing(though i really dig Rim's dev texture!)
-new sky
-night version with some snazzy uplighting
-decals/sprites to accent things

Skals: Sky brushes don't count towards the limit. Any invisible brushes, shouldn't count either. afaik, sprites and all point entities (besides models) are fair game.

Awesome, Captain, but the texture on the service structure could use some better allignment.
And why not use a different texture for the launch platform?

Thanks Daub that's a fine compliment coming from you! =)

Zeeba: ya, i tried REALLY HARD to map an area rather than a glorified prop, but i'm finding it really difficult with the brush limit..

Atom: Yeah you're right the superstructure texture could be aligned better. Remeber though too, without being able to clip the object into more pieces(which would create too many excess brushes), finding a texture or textures to make it look right is going to be difficult imo.

Math: 30 solid brushes - 6 brushes used for SKYBOX (including ground, which cannot be seen) = 24 solids used. 24 solids + 5 brush entities (conveyors and func_illusionarys seen in the picture = 29 brushes. Not including 6 point entities which one of them is a light_environment and 5 are barely visible sprites to enhance the lighting and desert background effects.

P.S.: 1 of my solid brushes can only be seen BARELY in one of the beauty shots and only in hammer, what a waste huh? :D I couldn't figure out where to put it.

First up, the proof - I used 1 skybox brush as the wall behind where the 'camera' was, but I guess in the end it didn't really matter.

And now, I present my entry- Hostage Situation. Sometimes, the HECU don't shoot. It's worse when that happens.

I really only entered this to indulge myself, using the stuff I can't use in Colony 42- Soldiers and concrete. Though, now that it's done, I may just have to release a 'designer's cut' as a 'map a movie' sequence.

How well did it play, I wonder. :P

It may have been in their rules but you can clearly see a lot of the entries have no gameplay in mind. MapCore didn't seem to mind in the end, and it let them map some interesting ideas, so I'm not making it a requirement.

It will be a requirement for the 1024 compo though, it seems perfect for it, being only limited by space.
A question to the admins, Is the limit to the brushes exactly 30 and if we go above we get disqualified, or is it around 30, so we can go 1 brush below or 2 brushes above? If you go above 30 you get disqualified, but the final count does not include skybox brushes or tool brushes like clip (not much need for those in screenshots, anyway). Point entities don't count. But it looks like you're under the limit anyway, nice looking entry.

Sounds fair to me, and I'm looking farward to 1024.

Skals I like that. Reminds me of a Warhammer set piece or something. The skybox is great.

friend_dieidle. The soldier holding him is using gordon_capidle, which is one of the Blue Shift animations, I think. It came with the hgrunt.

It's great to see all the participation; we beat SP's 20-brush turnout like 5 minutes after the compo start, LOL.

Except most of us seem to be building scenes instead of whole levels.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-29 02:56:02 UTC Post #292658
That's true.

One entry from SP by finger really impressed me and looked like a full-size level from the screens, though i think it's use of displacements makes it a bit unfair. Also, a few of the mapcore entries(lunaran and reno's, and vilham's to an extent) really impressed me, as they somehow built an entire playable level, and with 10-less brushes than we're using. :o

I'm try to redo mine in the spirit of one of the aforementioned examples if i get some extra time.

Thanks guys! Nice to see some good reviews, It took me quite some time to find the right skybox and get the right lighting for it, but in the end I think I did it just right. It's made for cs 1.6 btw, that's why theres a little netgraph in the corner :)

Edit: hah, I looked at Crollos photos and my jaw dropped, but then I realized they weren't his.

Not finished.

Getting pretty close to completion, I think.
It's a shame you can't submit, the lighting system looks a LOT better in motion then in still images.

For the record, I blame you guys for making me stay up all night working on this thing.
The nostalgic feeling is a feeling I'd only get from memories of being 8 years old on a old pile of shit Compaq that only had a gig of hard drive space free, staying up all night working on some wierd zombie map with impossible sentry bots, then going through leech infested waters to go up to a barney so I can make him press a button which sets off a bunch of explosions. I was so damned proud of that at the time.

God damnit, it's been too long.

Indeed it was a great opportunity Atom, Indeed.

I don't understand why you guys are adding playable elements to your game, like, or stating that it looks better in motion, whats the point? This competition is based on three screenshots and proof of 30 brushes, it has no interactive elements involved at all.
