Thanks mate, you not entering?

Also, Good luck Soup, I think you'll find the brush limit to be very very intrusive, just do what I did in my revisions, if it doesn't serve any purpose, get rid of it, replace it with something else.

I change my mind because so many people are joining. Well, I'll be putting up a really noob entry. It will make everyone else's entry look good. I promise.

This is psilous's map (he realizes that he's probably disqualified because of his ban):

Why is he banned?
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-31 01:15:55 UTC Post #292701
He posted something in the shoutbox (probably porn or something disgusting) that Penbuinboy didn't like. He got a temporary ban lasting two weeks.

I'd say disqualifying him because of the actual content of the map would make more sense then disqualifying for the ban.

Looks to me like he's asking for us to make his ban permanent.

I'm sure "Penguinboy sucks" won't help a bit. Also, swastikas are on their way out of pop culture.

I do love bad CSI puns.

Getting back on topic, we're obviously skipping that entry, meaning we have 8-9 entries with more on the way. Good turnout so far, and it's only been 3 days.

Makes me want to enter.

Can we submit more than one entry by any chance? This actually makes for a really good mapping exercise.
Posted 13 years ago2011-03-31 08:14:57 UTC Post #292731
Going to have to say no to more than one, but you can submit a new entry, if you think you're onto something better than your old one.

If I come up with an idea, I may enter myself. :>

So i've reached 30 really quickly. I'm jealous of those 20 brush maps that look more complex than mine. I may have to take another go at this after completing this one.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-01 05:37:15 UTC Post #292776
Damnit I would try source if there was a option to use the old 2006 engine.

Another thing is to avoid making a map from a full [layed out] idea you have in your head, if you make something from only a general idea of what you want to make, you don't set 'goals' that you will end up going 'Oh man I'm out of brushes and this scene looks pretty stupid without this prop or that light switch!' and then just simply running out of everything, on the other hand it's more difficult and at the same time more prone to being less creative when you simply just start creating with only a general idea.

Yeah, I found out really quickly that the entire point is to build a map that successfully masks how few brushes there really are. It's hard :)
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-01 07:17:52 UTC Post #292779
Alright well after working on it for some time I am really pleased with it. It has gameplay and looks good for its size. I'm surprised at the matter of detail you can get out of a single brush.

@Crollo, you can figure the layout but just understand that it has to be simple. So pick a theme that is really simple and it helps a lot.

I'm completely done with the mapping besides some minor tweaking and texturing. Just have to add weapons, start locations, ambience, more lighting etc...

I'm no longer "as" jealous :ciggie:

Currently 17 brushes.

Also maybe we should have a separate thread for the entries, in which you are only allowed to post your submissions, so people can compare entries without having to flip through all the mumbo jumbo.

You could make an impressive map using lots of sprites without using any brushes at all except for sky.

You mean when it comes to voting? There'll be a new thread for that.

Yeah, and you'd lose the competition. :P

i like how mapcore did it too, having separate threads for each category of level-making, and then tallying the scores. (i'm not saying we should do that, just thought it was neat)

Dumb Question #42: we can still use sprites, correcto?

Yeah you can, but remember that brushwork is the focus.

I made a prototype hldm map. I'm not too convinced, but I think it's acceptable for 30 brushes. (+6 sky)
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-02 02:07:51 UTC Post #292832
Yeah you can, but remember that brushwork is the focus.
How would you be able to tell the difference? You can lock the angles of sprites so they don't rotate. They can also be transparent. Heck, you could even take a screenshot of a 100-brush map and turn the screenshot it into a sprite that you put in your map, then take a screenshot of the sprite in your map.

I realize of course that you'd be an asshole if you did this, I'm just saying.

Lol potatis the point is use 30 visible brushes. If you did something like that it would be obvious and you'd be disqualified.

I used a few sprites to accentuate lighting and movement. Also crammed in as much ambience as I could to add another dimension though won't help for judgement. I think playability of the map should contribute to its chances.

why only 21 solids? The limit was 30. And Kraken i'm really just using the extra time to my advantage incase I want to change anything else. Yours is really cool btw! Is it playable?

Well Zeeba, you can upload WIP screens, just don't write "final" at the top of the post, I also intend to wait until the last day to submit mine as well, it'd be silly not to. And in what sense of the word playable do you mean? It hasn't been compiled yet, and if I added in weapons spawns etc, sure it'd be playable, but I don't think it would be too much fun, I'm just making it "like" a deathmatch map, but without gameplay in mind really.

Also, best way to cheat would be to make a map with no restrictions, screenshot it, and texture a few brushes in an even newer map with the screen shots (that newer map will be what you submit) Then just screenshot the newer map accordingly.
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-02 18:07:59 UTC Post #292886
I might post an elevation. But for the most part it will be a surprise.

Well by playable I mean did you make it to be a dm map or not. Yea it wouldn't probably be fun unless you had planned it to be for it from the start. But I don't think gameplay will affect the screenshots...
Posted 13 years ago2011-04-03 00:57:39 UTC Post #292896
Kraken: jeah you're right, but i did already post a WIP of my first try at least!=) PLUS, at the very final stages of my map i am running into some technical difficulties with the dreaded "AllocBlock:full" error and that wretched "MaxLeafFaces" to boot, cuz i got too much faces in my map (the average solid has 40 or so faces, lol).

It actually compiles fine with a light_environment as the sole light source, but if i try loading any of my texlights, it shits out the "MaxLeafFaces" error, or, after a grueling compile time, i get that "Alloc:Block" error. My choices are either to make the map less complex, upscale my textures to a retarded level, or eliminate my texlights; none of which i want.

'(

BTW, i tried porting to source thinking it could easlily handle my special architecture, but source won't even compile my crazy shapes on VVIS-only compile! (hammer 3.x does this easily, probably because of HLFix)

Don't get me wrong though: in almost every respect Hammer 4 is superior, most undoubtedly in terms of hard limits, BUT, there still a very few things that Hammer 3.x does better apparently. =)

edit x1000: i had a hell of a time with that last sentence, and i'm sure it is probably STILL incorrect/bad grammar. I think i need to go to bed now.

As long as it's all touching, one solid can make a hell of a lot.
